Max_Caine
The number of soliders you can have in a mission is determined by the dropship. Therefore, you must alter the stats of the dropship. You can find dropship stats in aircrafts.xml. If you're using a text editor to open the XML file, then you want the following (in bold). <Row> <Cell><Data ss:Type="String">airplane.human.chinook</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">200</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">0</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">48000</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">500</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">200</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">10</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">10</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">0</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">0</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">0</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">0</Data></Cell> <Cell ss:Index="14"><Data ss:Type="Number">8</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">1</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="String">216;450;491;255;6;3</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">100</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">0.4</Data></Cell> <Cell ss:StyleID="s67"><Data ss:Type="Number">50000</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">30.01</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">7.02</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">10185</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">40</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="String">POWERPLANT.Turboshaft</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="String">CH-48 Charlie</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">18500</Data></Cell> <Cell ss:Index="29"><Data ss:Type="String">aircraft/chinook</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="String">aircraft/aircombat/interceptor</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">100</Data></Cell> <Cell ss:StyleID="s69"><Data ss:Type="String">No</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="Number">1</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="String">Yes</Data></Cell> <Cell ss:StyleID="s69"><Data ss:Type="String">Yes</Data></Cell> <Cell><Data ss:Type="String">Yes</Data></Cell> <Cell ss:Index="41"><Data ss:Type="String">ui_screens/ui_soldierequip/chinook</Data></Cell> </Row>

Max_Caine
Once upon a time in a beta far, far away, the Charlie held 10 soliders. This was eventually pared down to 8, because the Shrike at the time held 12 soliders so that was a big step up. But once, just once, the Charlie did carry more soldiers. Chris
Pretty sure it originally used to be 12 soldiers, with the Shrike carrying 14 and the Valkyrie 16 - that's why the game supports up to 16 soldiers, and why there's so much spare space inside a Charlie

NuclearStudent
The question is: where are the pilots? The troopers are all ex-pilots. That would explain why the dropship is lost when all the troopers are dead. It doesn't really explain how you can abort a mission and leave everybody behind..
