I thought upgrades to fighter planes were supposed to propage to existing models...

Aircraft weapons (cannons/missiles) are auto upgraded. The airframe is not.

Corsairs split opinion on the forum. I generally find that 1 per base is sufficient; I just use them whenever the aliens launch an air superiority mission or when I go against an escorted capital ship (with 2 Foxtrots to take the capital ship). 1 Corsair can take out any group of alien fighters in the game if handled correctly. However, they're not much use for anything other than shooting down fighters so other than air superiority or capital ships with an escort they don't see much use.

The next aircraft is the Marauder, which is pretty awesome and will probably be one you'll want to produce in serious numbers.

I would recommend building corsairs. A mixed force of corsairs and foxtrots will keep you in control of the airspace until the appearance of carriers if you use them right and stay on top of the tech levels. If you have a bunch of them you'll stay in control until battleships, which is the point you just need marauders(in b4 dranak kills a battleship with a condor just to spite me). Corsairs are the most micro-intensive Interceptor, and they have the biggest gap between what auto-resolve thinks they can do and what they can actually do. But if you understand the basics of how air combat works, you can do some serious work with them.

The reason you're probably confused is aircraft weapons are auto-upgraded, not the aircraft themselves.

Personally Corsairs are the foundation of my airforce lately. I usually build my squads as one foxtrot and two Corsairs to keep control of the skies.

What UFOs are you fighting at that stage? I find once you get to landing ships you need 2 Foxtrots for the firepower

If you keep your tech up Corsairs can solo landingships, or if you're a little behind two corsairs can kill it with high expectation of taking no damage. Its simple, the landingship will target one of them, so you have the one being targeted run away while the other sits in its blind spot and pump fire into it. If that's not enough to kill it, bring the other one in from the front and finish it off.

Did somebody seriously ask about building Foxtrots? Yes, you need them. In any case, Corsairs are, in my eyes, a lot like gauze: they help stem the bleeding and they're even useful later on for cleaning up. Condors are too slow later on to be useful, and their missiles weren't hitting anything anyway. Corsairs are able to keep up with Foxtrots at top speed an so are great for helping intercept fast ships with escorts. My two cents, at least.

Ah, this is an air-combat patience issue. I don't tend to use Corsairs against the larger targets because I like the fights to be short and sweet, and getting a Corsair to empty cannons into a capital scale UFO is anything but.

Well in terms of faster combat, Corsairs do generally have higher auto resolve strength than Foxes.

Probably true, which is where you get the other side of the paradox; I don't normally trust auto-resolve as 9 combats out of 10* I can beat the performance.

I'm actually happy with the Corsair as a pure aerial superiority fighter; it's great that it can do more but I just don't feel the need to use it in any other way.

*fight 10 is Foxtrots vs a carrier in a head to head engagement; I always lose a Foxtrot, which I suspect auto-resolve would not.

You shouldn't be losing Foxtrots in engagements without autoresolve. The range of the missiles is long enough that you can pop them off and then immediately press the retreat button and afterburn it out.

In a head to head vs carriers the Carrier's main gun and the Foxtrot's torpedos fire at pretty much the same time. Generally the Foxtrot does not then have time to turn and get enough sideways movement to avoid the Carrier's shot.

i focus mainly on corsair. but i go for the heavy weapon research first if possible. i use them in a team of 3 and let them get back after they shoot everything down or are out of ammo. and they have a lot of ammo... mag weapon corsair are king!
