Huh. I thought I looked. Still, a minor issue. -

Add Role Soft Lock (Windows, v. 0.32)
Assoonasitis replied to Assoonasitis's topic in X:CE Bug Reports
I will do my best to reproduce this and capture. -
I don't have a screenshot for this, but it's pretty straightforward. I'm not sure if it's in the regular game or just CE, but I'm using CE, so I'll post it here. The issue is pretty simple, and easy to replicate. Upon entering the name for a new role and pressing Enter OR clicking OK, the dialogue doesn't close. Repeatedly pressing Enter/clicking OK does not seem to add the role more than once. At this point the game is locked and I have to alt+F4 out. Steps: 1. Start new game. 2. Enter Soldier Equipment screen. 3. Select Change Role->Add New Role. 4. Select icon for role (I've been choosing the shield, though I suspect that doesn't matter). 5. Dialogue to name role appears; enter role name and confirm. 6. Game is now locked. Right now it's a bit of a hassle, but I suspect it will become more so when I actually need to add extra roles instead of re-purposing old ones. Thanks for the hard work you guys do!

Xenonauts V1.5 Experimental Released!
Assoonasitis replied to Chris's topic in Xenonauts-2 Releases & Patch Notes
Torn between using this or keeping on with CE. I think I'll keep the CE for now, though, and switch over to this when final is released. Glad to see that a lot of the nice things from CE are being carried over, though! -

Also: I'm using image hosting now so that I can have more pictures per post, but the size has gone down a bit. If it's a problem, let me know and I'll see what I can figure out. -
Diary of a War Hero: Let's Play Xenonauts!

Night time. It could have gone worse. A lot worse. I was first out of the Charlie. We had touched down in the middle of a forest, and visibility was low. Lefty led the charge out the side. The forest was a little thicker than we first imagined. We formed up and tried to keep an eye on things as best we could. There were a lot of trees, but no sign of any ETs. The boys were a bit... concerned... about going into the forest, so Lefty manned up and went in first again. And, emboldened by the sight of not much, the rest of them moved up, too. It was dark, we were tired and we'd already lost one of our own in the day time. Tensions were high as we continued our sweep, but there wasn't much going on. Gene--Eugene, our squad's sniper--Sergey and I moved up, trying to stick to cover. Jim wasn't so smart and got tagged by something we couldn't see in the trees. For all the flares we tossed it didn't do us much good thanks to the thick forest. Jim was fine, but something else took a pot-shot at him and he spooked. Dropped his gun and ran. I moved in and saw the Al who was taking shots at us... ... and cleaned him up. The thing about forests, though, is that there are a lot of things to hide behind. I moved up just a bit and... ... ran into another Al. He didn't stand a chance. For as quiet as it had been up until then, it sure didn't stay quiet. This Al managed to get a flank on us and tagged Ervin but good. Gene had said he was worried the trees would make it hard to get off a shot, but he carved one into his stock all the same. Sergey moved in and patched Ervin up. On the way home, Serge said it was pretty easy to patch up, since Al's shot had done most of the cauterizing anyway. Once Erv was good, Serge told him to head back to the Charlie, just in case. Unfortunately, Jim heard Erv get shot... ... and high-tailed back to the Charlie as well. We moved in deeper and managed to find Al's little ship again. Norwyn took point here while I got into position. Thank God he did. I set up next to the door, ready to breach. Al musta heard me, though, because he came charging out. Norwyn's quick trigger-finger is the only thing that saved me that night. He got a promotion out of it. So did I, as well as Command recognizing me for taking out a handful of ETs. I know five is a tiny number in this huge war, but just knowing Command is recognizing our efforts gives me a little more hope for the future. We were lucky, too. We didn't lose anybody that night... It just made the loss of Anna sting a little bit more. After all that excitement in one day, though, things quieted down a bit. A couple of the guys mentioned that they thought maybe we had managed to scare Al off a bit, but I knew better. A few days later, we got a new rookie, Aggie. She's slow as anything, but Command made her our squad scout. I heard later on that it's because she had demo training and knew how to carry the shield. After that, though, all we did was wait for the next contact. And now, we get to thread participation! Here's the soldiers we have to choose from right now. I've already hired a couple of new soldiers, but I think I'll leave it up to you guys to decide: who should I hire? What should his or her "call" be? And where should we build our next base, when we have the funds? Also, what do you guys think so far? It's hard to get good snaps on the aliens' turns because everything happens so quickly (I'm using Steam's built in image capturing). I guess I could get screen capture software and use that, but it would eat up my HD space really quick so... -

Diary of a War Hero: Let's Play Xenonauts!

My night mission went swimmingly! No casualties, but two injuries, and one guy even panicked. I would like to add that the map that I was on was fantastic. I want to say it's from Skitso's map pack, but that could be the wrong author. Regardless, the forest is very tense. -

Of course I'm save scumming. This is about the story and the game, not about me (although technically the story is about me). -
Ma told me there'd be days like this At first, I didn't really believe what I heard on the radio. Nobody did, really. Not only are space aliens real , but they're hell-bent on killing us all? But then more radio reports were coming in and even some photographs in the newspapers, and that's when I wrote Ma and told her that I might be getting sent up. Oh! I should probably introduce myself. This is me: Sergeant Benjamin Glatt. That's right: Sergeant. I told them to promote somebody else, but Command told me that I was the one who could keep morale highest, so I was the one who got promoted. I still think it was a mistake, but Command makes the decisions, not me. I was on a training exercise in the field, just outside Montréal, when I got called up. I was the only guy in my unit who didn't volunteer, but my CO had recommended me--again, he said there was something special about me that "the effort" could make good use of. I got sent out to Northern Africa, along with 49 other people who'd been variously selected or volunteered for the Corps. "Earth's very finest," they called us. We trained for just over a month, where Command told us all they knew about the enemy, which wasn't much. There was an 80% washout rate for that month: family deaths, training "injuries", and other problems. The last ten of us were told we were "the best and last hope of our world." No pressure. After that, it was two more weeks of intense training to get us "field ready". I got real close with the rest of the unit over those two weeks. Especially these two: Chris England, and Anna Rogers. Chris is my bunkmate. We call him "Lefty" because he would call the junior COs "leftenant". Anna was the only woman to make it through basic with us. We called her "Big Sis"; she was older than most of us and despite trying to be a jar-head type, she couldn't help but look out for us. She... We had only been out of training four days when we made our first two contacts. Command sent out the birds to bring them down. We lost one, but luckily one pilot was able to down an ET over Burkina Faso. We were wheels-up just after and started our first bona fide ground engagement with Al a few hours later. We landed at the back of an oil refinery and all filed out of the Charlie. We got visual on our first two Als--Caesans--in short order. Our sniper took the first one out no problem. Al #2 took a powder when he heard his buddy cry out. We started our sweep after that. I stopped to check on the one we got: he was almost human. Real frail-lookin'. Almost felt sorry for Al. Otherwise, it wasn't too eventful; Al was hiding from us. We thought it was a good sign: Al gets spooked too. We found the Al who took a powder and executed that bastard. That's when it went to Hell. It wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme--only one of us got tagged--but Big Sis took the hit and she was gone. I screamed and shot the Al who got her in the back of the head. A squad mate hit the other one who was hiding in the storage shacks. We formed up outside their craft and breached. Al almost looked pathetic, cowering in the corner in his little box. I didn't care; they killed Anna, so I took out those last two bastards with extreme prejudice. She was the first, but she wouldn't be the last... When we got back to base we didn't even have time to mourn Anna; we had regained contact with the ship that got away, and our Condors took it out. Just like that, we were off on another mission right on the Cape of Good Hope... ... in the middle of the night. I sure hope this doesn't bite our asses.

Well, Chris, I got my physical rewards. And I must say that I am quite pleased with them. The art book especially is fantastic. The only thing that's left is to mount and frame the poster. And so, I want to say thank you. Five years I've been looking forward to this finished product, and I must say that I am not disappointed in it one bit. Thanks for the swag, thanks for the memories, and, most of all, thanks for an amazing game. Here's to you and whatever the future holds for Goldhawk.

Skitso, you're a prince among men.

Your guys are going to die. It's gonna happen, unless you save-scum. When soldiers enlist in the Xenonauts Corps, they get coffins comped because it's generally not if you die horribly with a hole seared through your torso, but rather when that happens. XCOM 2012 is very much a new game, by which I mean it adheres to modern tenants of game-making: the player should feel like a match for the enemy; everything is streamlined; it should seem "fair"; don't make the player feel like he or she is losing. Oldskool X-COM did not play by those rules: it was hard, enemies were WAY better than you, and you very often felt like you were fighting a losing battle; all of which gave the original its charm and made it fun. Xenonauts tries to capture that oldskool "why is this so hard why am I losing WHY" feeling from '93.

[Suggestions] Energy\stamina - old X-com system ...
Assoonasitis replied to Game_tester's topic in X:CE General Discussion
Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a giant jerk about that. Regardless, I think that while energy adds a layer of realism, it would be difficult to balance well so that it wasn't completely obtrusive or feel completely unfair. If you can figure it out, I'll be the first one to give you mad props. -
[Suggestions] Energy\stamina - old X-com system ...
Assoonasitis replied to Game_tester's topic in X:CE General Discussion
Two things. First: energy was bad in X-Com and TFTD. It only ever was an issue for units that could move incredibly far (Chryssalids) or units who were heavily over-burdened or took a bunch of body shots without dying. In the end this made Chryssalids less scary sometimes and made guys not just dying outright pretty annoying. And all it added was a couple extra "End Turn" clicks. Second: If you can dream it (and probably somehow get access to the same code that the CE has) you can do it. -
As soon as we stop seeing them as women and start seeing them as soldiers (done, for me), women of the military will be liberated.

Modular UFOs - Discussion and Suggestions
Assoonasitis replied to kabill's topic in Modding Discussion
I'm playing around with the editor, but have some questions if I might PM kabill? I'm trying to start slow but can't seem to suss out how to make things work with the already available maps. Once I get that figured I can try my hand at some designing (I am a terrible sketch artist and have difficulty translating my ideas to coherent sentences). -
I detect one small problem with this: I never have just three Marauders OR one Fury sitting around: I have old Foxtrots and Corsairs and whatnot as well, and so the added HP for the UFOs as well as the added damage for the singularity torp would get just a bit ludicrous. Or not, maybe.
