A consept that can bring X-com, Jagged Alliance and other strategy games together?

Hi.

I think this has been mention before, but I can't find that tread, but here is a suggestion (Xenonauts version 2.0?).

Background:

An alien invation will probably target military installations and any new bases will of course be their main target. Because of this it would be difficult to build and maintain a large base (as in all X-com games and UFO-series). The world economy would be ruined and the need for money is not a issue (at least in the start of the game).

Main idea:

One person (you) decide it is time to fight back. Your task is to build a military organisation from scratch. In the beging of the game you start with abonded weapons (baseball bats, crowbar, knifes, pistols, shotguns - stuff you find) and make small attacks on aliens. During initial missions you will meet people you can recuit (merchenaries). A way to pay them is by provide food.

The people you meet will have different abilities; soldiers, medical, research, farmers and so on. Even if the people have different abilities, they can be used as soldiers or they can also be given other duties; research, hospital, farming, production and more. Even if a person is set to be a doctor, you can bring him/her on a mission of you want.

The progress of the game will become to manage to create a large base with vehicles and planes/UFO's. (Idea: In the aera of your protection (the base) there will be easier to trade and economy/currency will again become an issue?). You probably have to use a lot of time protecting a big base as it will become a natural target for the aliens.

The end of the game will be when you have managed to control the world - and in version 3.0 - well...

You ned to have a research team to reverse engineer capture devices.

You need to provide enough food for a growing group (in example: if you hire 1 person he/she might have a family that the want to bring to the camp). Food can be privded with hunting, looting, trade with other people or farming .

Note: When a person is hired he/she will get a uniform (easier for graphics :))

This is the basic idea for a game - any thoughts?

Sounds like a good starting point, but some more thought should be given to the way the story will progress. How easy will it be to find the mercenaries? Will they always be encountered in the same way? If not, how will this affect research? How many aliens types will there be, and how will different research open up different options of taking them down? and many, many more things.

But a nice start =]

For any rebellion, you need Propaganda. That could be the mechanic that 'replaces' the politics of X-Com/Xenonauts. Don't have all the humans come to you, instead be waging a war behind the war; a war of propaganda, for recruits.

Also, there needs to be something in place at some point to make the game about offense rather than defense, preferably from the very start. Rebellion's always start small and take the initiative, that's the whole point of a rebellion, particularly against Alien Overlords. So how do you make it about the offensive rather than a zero-sum game of 'Defend, Recruit, Rinse, Repeat'?

One way would be if the aliens were here for something specific, perhaps something specific to earth bio-sphere. Perhaps some flora or fauna is being harvested and humans could assault these relatively open targets first compared to heavily fortified bases. Or they could be doing research on making these plants/animals survive on other worlds so they can take them with them. Again assaulting these targets might be a slightly easier mission at the beginning of the game.

it could also be offensive if the aliens have dug in, they have set up their bases across the wrold, and their supply lines and their patrols etc. go out regularly, then it would be all about wearing them back, making hit and run attacks until more and more people see your success and you can take on larger conflicts

Maybe a story similar to incubation would work better.

You are a private security/mercenary company guarding a mining colony.

Then some sorts of Aliens/Zombies show up. Probably Genestealer or X-Com Apoc style Aliens.

Having to hold out until the real military arrives, instead of always being on the offensive might even add a nice twist to the concept.
