For example, when I want to attack a UFO, hide the dropship from the list. If I want to land on a crash-site, hide the fighters from my list. Or is there a reason to allow it I have not thought of?

for the first option (hide dropship when attacking ufo) i say yes

but for the second option i think you forgot (or never encountered) that dropships can be attacked by enemy fighters, and selecting your own fighters provides your dropship with the necessary escorts

Also, don't hide the dropship from the air combat screens. What if we want to have a dropship come along for the fun? Give us that choice, don't limit us because leaving it behind is the "logical" thing to do.

Dont forget Alien abduction missions (UFO is constantly landing and taking off). There is a good chance we may assault and catch the UFO intact, but we do have to send the fighters ahead.

This game is supposedly for intelligent ppl that will figure out a risk of sending dropship out. Also it doesn't have to be sent with the attack team (squadron probably travels as fast as the slowest ship), but after them to have soldiers on the ground asap.

You do have indication which ships are best to be sent for currently selected alien craft. The text indicate which ones you should use. I found that there's only one "drawback" with it. If you see select ship that landed, you don't have dropship highlighted - guess logic behind it is checking if craft is down or not.
