  1. Some research on the topic leaded to the following: - It's relatively easy to make outline sheets, but due to sheer quantity of files even with the right scripts/macro it will take around a week. - You will have to deal with double amount of files, or combine sprites and outlines in one file either creating a huge canvases or writing own codecs for layered PNG's. God help you. - Another way is per-pixel works on the fly. Shaders might help here, but i'm not sure if the playground SDK supports shaders. - Look at the picture. Second and third variants with half-visible enemies will require additional untrivial coding. This topics are not covering other variants of visibility improvement offered, only the outline implementing.
  2. Technically it's posible to pre-generate outline sheets with the custom tool. This will double file numbers (which are already huge) though.
  3. oh, didn't i say relatively? I just didn't want to study blender from scratch again. I've made a mod for sega Streets of Rage once, so i know a thing about the hard ways =) Of course if you'll manage to set up the scene, lighting, and postprocessing tools (contour, shrinking, packing into sheets), it would be easier.
  4. Hmm, driver concepts? Back to track: If i would have to make a mod, i'd go the (relatively) easy way - redrawing existing sprites. Sure, it's a lot of work, but you have patterns for all main weapon types to keep your animations consistent, and you don't even need to know animation. Just long and tedious redraw. I was thinking of making "sebillian in a dress" (based on a certain fanart) mod this way, but then Max proposed a better idea.
  5. May be power converter isn't so bad? Laser and MAG techs aren't using plasma directly, but all of the techs are electricity-based. So the power converter can be something that turns alenium into electricity (since alenium cells are constructed from, erm, alenium and not from some abstract power). And generic is not always bad. Heatsink is a heatsink, you can call it Heat Dissipator, Coolant system, or Thermal reductor. Heat displacement is fine too.
  6. I think that's neat. You'll have a dependency on the alien weapons, plus this will nicely explain why the new weapons are researched relatively fast (essentially they are just a bunch of alien components wired together in a creative way). Simple components is an elegant decision too. To make things a little easier, can you make the strip process automatic, like the autopsies are made now? Although that will not save you from adding those 6 manufacturing projects.. Also i'd suggest to allow producing these basic components albeit at cost high enough to create ambiguous choice between farming saucers or losing some money for exchange of manufacturing stability.
  7. It is a balancing issue. There is a big deal of balancing going on this stage of the game, and it's being discussed right now on the beta forums, with personal thread for the geoscape. Also look for the difficulty balancing. Perhaps you can find your answer there? And "imo needs fixing asap" is not a magic spell. Stop using it, please.
  8. And if you want to avoid the immension breaking, use WordStar. How much of this threads we already have? four? five?
  9. Now i know how to make a save breaker. MhmhmmhmhahahaHAHA! On the related topic, next art is almost ready. Though Max can decide to hold it over until the second one.
  10. You can't leave your walls without meeting some trolls.. or something like that. Perhaps, "You can't stop the flood without banning bad blood"?
  11. That eternal clash between morality and effectiveness. Does the end justify any means? The answer will not be that simple, since sometimes it's important what will you become when you finish your way. (every playthrough of The binding of Isaac is one big unsettling metaphor of this fact) Thanks for recalling this, Max. And as always, great writing.
  12. Gladly this doesn't apply to the clothes, boots and your motorcycle.
  13. Thread name gets a new, sinister meaning now. Lots of new blood on the forum.
  14. I like this picture. Only the most badass scientists are able to wear the Powerglove! Good luck to you guys, always nice to hear about the incoming features. It's a noble piece of the luxurious and stylish head equipment you trying to mess with, sir. Stop for your own good.
  15. Winning in xenonauts is simple. All you need to do is being Charlie Sheen.
  16. Jungles. Night. First time with mutons. 13 years old me. Nuff said.
  17. Well, you shouldn't take my gruntings seriously too. Except for the part about easiness of modding, that's true.
  18. Red subheaders? eww. Jk, i'm not that proficient in typography. But i can say that the current font suits the game pretty well, and is easily moddable. That means it's probably not gonna change in the official version, but pretty sure there will be lot of font mods. Be first and go make your own =) Here you can find how to do it. It's probably even possible to use two fonts instead of one like in your picture (original date and header are using the same xenonauts.mvec, just different sizes), by enforcing the font tag in xml entries. I'd like to see what you will be able to do. Just..try not to use red subheaders. Friendly advice.
  19. I can help you with the latter, pm me if you will encounter a problem.
  20. Oh we will, since my project finishing abilities were a number one priority to work at when i was planning my part of work. And i believe in Max better than i do in myself.
  21. Good thotkins! nice thread! Now i can finally know what mods are present and what they alter. I'd like to suggest one thing: compatibility is a bit of unclear. Some older mods can still work with the new builds, some aren't. How about the color coding or just "working/outdated/abandoned" badges?
  22. I'd like to say thanks, Chris and everyone. Thank you, Max, for your idea and support. I'd like to, but it's too early for the final credits, folks, come on. Back to work, back to work. Actually, i'm very inspired =) But don't forget to throw on some critics too.
  23. I just think that "incapable" is a very strong word for a science report based on, well, truly incapable of verbal communicating corpse. I would use something like: "Wasn't observed of using the audible wavelengths as a communication means on the battlefield", but this game isn't THAT nerdy.
