They were just deluded that the aliens would care about things like 'consent'. Also, what the heck does 'Sea Org' even do? They do something for something, and people? What? I'd rather a cult about Lovecraft. Racist wierdo who wrote about eldritch monstrosities? Yes please. Just the thing for the modern geek/goth/Lord Tyrant.
