does anyone else think this is really annoying? =/

It's not very fun to have all my fighters engaged then a fighter wing swoops down from space and kills all my soldiers going to or returning from a mission before I can react ~_~

I like this aspect to the game because it forces you to prioritize and not be able to handle everything. I DO think it needs some more balancing though in terms of speed of interception, how to better protect your chinook etc. Later into the game I send 2 fighters with my Chinook just to protect it but 2 F17s vs 3 fighters is still tough.

Don't forget the current alpha is somewhat unbalanced and also missing some tech. I suspect the laser gun for the F17's is going to make 2v3 engagements much more favourable for the xenonauts and offset the fact they're outnumbered.

I do quite like the Chinook being shot down function. I suspect it's also going to be less of an issue when you unlock the better dropships later on.

Are you actually sending two fighters out as part of the dropships squadron?

It does make it easier to defend than trying to manually pick off anything coming for them.

As Hellstormer said though, it does leave you with a 3v2 fight.

Maybe the dropship shouldn't count as part of the squadron?

When the UFOs appear near your lone Chinook, is it simply a chance thing i.e. the counter is at a high enough level that there will be plenty of UFO activity in the area anyway.

Or is it as vindictive as it looks. Lone Chinook being picked on because it's a lone Chinook and the counter is at a certain level?

It'll probably be the first. But t also makes game sense for the second option. They have 3000 ships in orbit, presubalby selecting targets for all of those strafing runs we see. Why wouldn't they spot the Chinook?

Either way, a certain sublte mention might be made of such a thing somewhere in the game/ manual. It's quite a game changer if it happens. While I'm happy enough to reload in a Alpah/Beta, I'd probably try and paly on in the actual game. Fighting off alien invasions and my sulk :-)

I think the fighters are supposed to spawn on the map with the mission of tracking down your craft.

When the waves are properly implemented they will probably spawn with the rest of the wave then start looking for you.

evil sods aren't they? It certainly adds a new twist onto the game, though. Not jsut about protecting your Chinook (quite tough at times even with an escort), but protecting everything else in the radar zone at the same time as the chinook's off on a mission. Interesting.

Speaking of which, is the escort a better approach to having the interceptors flying independantly around it? From my brief experience of this scenario, a chinook by iteself will be hunted down; a chinook with an escort is less likely but once it's detected will be hunted; my chinook on it's own but with an escort buziing aorund with waypoints got left completely alone.

Reading far too much into nothing here, probably...

Also don't forget what this war is supposed to be. I think that this is supposed to be like the air war over Britain in WWII. If you look up the battle of britain, and see exactly how they defended themselves, I think you'll see exactly what this is supposed to be. Only now you're fighting for technical superiority as well as areal supremacy. Well 'supremacy' being optimal conditions to send a slow moving transport.
