For sound editing, I use Audacity, which is pretty good. And when I want to try and make my own sounds I use bfxr - you can make your own 8-bit sound effects. I thought I better at least offer something back for others to benefit. One thing that helped me is once I sources some sound file they were rarely in .ogg format.
