  1. That Krater thing seems interesting, haven't heard of it before now. This one is called Age of Decadence. It's an isometric view rpg set in a medieval fantasy style setting that uses a very Fallout-esque combat and skill system (referring to fallout 1/2 of course). The game world seems to be more akin to Song of Ice and Fire in the sense that it has little magic and doesn't rely on standard fantasy elements in its presentation. In fact there won't be any spellcasting classes, it's all skin & steel so to speak. Link: http://www.irontowerstudio.com/
  2. Oh yeah, well spotted. I guess all menu titles will need to be pushed to the left a bit.
  3. Looks good Chris. Found a few typos and a couple of bugs/oversights but the new site should do a good job of "selling the game". Bug1. The extraterrestrials menu title can't fit inside its box: Bug2. Identical Iceland Incident menu titles. No pt1/2 differentiation. I have to admit I'm curious about the price change. An arguable 33% off is no small amount and it came sort of out of the blue. I know you're not too keen to talk about it but whatever the reason I hope it attracts more sales and pays off.
  4. Oh, for some reason I thought that was referring to the last weekend and everything was running horribly late (as is topically expected).
  5. There is no release date and dev status should be known when the new Xenonauts site launches and the new build is released to pre-orders which should be........any day now?
  6. The official word is that the WB port "isn't planned". Some of what they've said on forums and such implies that the port isn't a definite no-no but the road to TLD's release has been long and arduous so first they want to rest and then they want to patch TLD and add features to it which will take quite a bit of time as well. In addition WB apparently has certain modding restrictions (believe it or not) which prevents some of the TLD features from being implemented. In conclusion I wouldn't hold my breath for a WB port. In fact the team seams more enthusiastic about porting TLD to M&B2 than doing it for WB. But ya never know I guess. I play TI too.
  7. Yeah, one of the main "deficiencies" is that the tooltips are absent/incomplete. I've heard that checking out the manual might help but I can't speak from personal experience.
  8. Hehe, yeah it's pretty great. I came across a very interesting free (truly completely free) little game. It's called "10 min space strategy". It's a very simplified 4x space turn based strategy with a decent amount of depth and options considering the scope of it. Basically you colonize planets, research tech, build ships, standard fare. There is no diplomacy, only war. It has customizable races (portrait, color, traits, unique buildings), capturable space anomalies that provide different bonuses and buildable space stations that can provide different benefits depending on the module chosen. Research is pretty straight forward but it's made more interesting by unlockable bonuses (see the "empire screen") that you can obtain once you reach a certain level of specific research areas. Combat is quick, simple and fully automated (the game is a bit chess-like in this sense). Outcome is modified by racial traits, tech level and, of course, the number of ships. The only ships in the game are: -fighters, the only ships to actually fight -bombers, used for killing off planet populations; can't fight (get insta-killed vs fighters if left alone) but a certain racial trait enables them to enhance the combat modifier of your fighters -colonizers, found colonies and build stations; "armed colonizers" trait also enables them to add power to your fleet the same as bombers Maps are randomly generated and the size (and number of players, human or AI) is customizable. As I said the game is turn based and it also supports hotseat. The download is only 24mb (look for the link below the donate button on the right, the 1.02 version): http://goblinlunatics.blogspot.com/ Oh and the TLD (The Last Days) mod for M&B is apparently ~6hrs away from release at the time of me posting this. In case you're out of the loop it's the LoTR mod for the original Mount & Blade that people have been feverishly waiting for quite a few years now: http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-last-days The mod's history is a dramatic tale of hardship, frustration and a lost mod leader making the release that much more satisfying.
  9. Not necessarily. I heard that the final mission in X-Com was perfectly passable with a pure rookie force. Apparently it was more about the sword rather than the hand that wields it. While Xenonauts is a different game rookies may still be decently effective if one is careful.
  10. There is some sort of explanation regarding the release version in the same thread (page 3). Member asking the question: Reply: However I still don't fully understand it. So there is the unfinished release version and "behind" that is the CTD riddled beta where the same unfinished stuff caused the said crashes and ate their homework...err progress? Most of the attention seems to be focused on the accidentally released beta as a way of diverting attention from the fact that even the retail version is severely lacking which is what the devs should actually be explaining. I don't mean to be negative but I get the impression that a number of these smaller/indie devs run out of time/money, then release not merely buggy but basically gutted games, and then use this "sincere apology" scheme knowing it will get them respect from the "tight indie community" with virtually no consequences and buy them time to actually finish the game. I guess it doesn't matter much if the game eventually does get to where it needs to be and I can understand that the business world can be harsh but jeeze louise am I tired of being bs-ed. If anyone remembers/knows about Star Ruler (another 4x space strategy), the two guys working on the game basically came out and said, "Ok, we're out of money and we have to release the game unfinished, such as it is, but we're going to keep working on it living on post-release sales so if you can please support us, buy it, and we'll get it done". Unpleasant as that was, that, I would say, was true honesty. Wonder if it payed of for them or if they ended up being the Eddard Stark of game development.
  11. Ok, here: Link: http://www.kerberos-productions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=22033&sid=451305ac19d2a9ca833a378700adfea6 In case it's not clear you can send them an email and ask for a refund, get SotS1 for free or wait for the patch train to arrive. Chris, I hope you never find yourself in this situation. I still don't really understand why can't they just replace the beta version with the "finished" one. Is it that Steam cannot "stop the presses" once the thing gets going or is the release version itself also largely messed up? There seems to be quite a bit of skirting around with this issue. Either way this is how it is.
  12. Well, the difference is that Elemental needed to be rebuilt almost from ground up (Fallen Enchantress) while SotS2 can hopefully be salvaged with patches. There's a kind of explanation/apology over here: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?567065-State-of-the-Game& From what I hear bad releases are pretty much standard fare when it comes to Paradox but dedicated support ensures that the game becomes good eventually. SotS1 was pretty crappy on release as well afaik though probably not as much as SotS2.
  13. But then Gazz disagrees with them nevertheless and compiles documentation detailing an even better solution.
  14. No need to explain it to me, I was the one who originally mentioned it. Was just joking with Sathra.
  15. Do you know of any other SotSE? I don't.
  16. I just remembered an indie game similar to SotS and SotSE, still in development, that I came across a while ago. Gemini Wars: http://geminiwars.camel101.com/ Supposedly the focus is on "fleet tactics" rather than using cooldown abilities (when compared to SotSE). Hope it's good. Oh and does anyone remember that Battlefleet Gothic total conversion for Dawn of War 1? Progress is freakin' slow but the mod leader appears determined to finish it and some kind of release seeeems to be coming up: http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?104523-Total-Conversion-Battlefleet-Gothic
  17. You should probably just hide the game in some dark drawer and wait a couple of weeks before taking it out again. From what I hear it'll take several patches until it's worth playing.
  18. Afaik there was an official statement from the devs that Steam uploaded a beta version by mistake. It was even said that the "real release" was in the process of being uploaded to rectify the situation and that it was a matter of hours. It'd be pretty dastardly if it turned out that the beta *is* the release version. And yes, the dx10 thing is just bs. Why would they do that? Mass Effect 2 doesn't require it, why SotS2?
  19. The achievements/awards do feel like clutter a bit since they're so numerous and mostly quite corny (a simple post count and "rank system" would be enough imo) but they don't prevent (or inhibit) me from identifying posters. A small visual annoyance at worst. If I may broaden the forum feature discussion I would dearly love to see support for tags. Their absence makes any serious (large scale?) image posting very messy. The attachment/thumbnail system is no good because it lowers image quality.
  20. AI should get a significant visual upgrade in 2.4 but it's been very long in the making. Iirc the game has a lot of features and potential but the process is slow. I don't remember much of it but I liked how base defenses could target UFOs on the geoscape for example.
  21. While it'd be nice to have something more elaborate I'm fine with this system. Deciding whether to pay more and "lose" the soldier for X amount of time or send him into the grinder right away makes for a valid strategic choice imo. I also agree with improving the familiarization course depending on the time passed, tech researched and autopsies/interrogations performed. Perhaps the training could also get longer the better it gets making the choice more and more difficult as things heat up.
  22. It's an issue of balance/gameplay rather than implementation.
