  1. Just in case people skip it, I posted as final post on last page that both Firaxis and Goldhawk don't intend to compete with each other and both have same ideas about what XCOM Enemy Unknown is and what Xenonauts is. Anyway, I post this from another thread: "UFO: Extraterrestrials failed because it didn't have its own good parts, its good parts were copied from another game. UFO: Alien Invasion is good example of that done right. Its another fan remake of original game, just like Xenonauts, but while it has core features from original game same, it has enough new features/changes to feel like its own game. It doesn't feel like its copy of XCOM, it feels like its part of same "subgenre" as XCOM. Thats what I meant. UFO Extraterrestrials doesn't feel like its own game, it feels like copy of xcom instead of just being part of the same genre. Xenonauts is doing it right by taking core features from original game, but changing some things for sake of balance or for better. " Note: When I say UFO: Extraterrestrial failed, I mean that its just 7/10 game instead of being great game. I don't mean it did badly or isn't worth playing, just that its not great game.
  2. Yeah, Xenonaut Kickstarter says that XCOM Enemy Unknown is more like progressive remake while Xenonauts is faithful remake, while Firaxis says that... XCOM Enemy Unknown is Reimagining while Xenonauts is remake, aka basically the same thing http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/05/firaxis-on-xcom-vs-xenonauts-optional-kill-cam/ So yeah, both of them claim they aren't competing with each other
  3. Yeah, demo ends with auto game over screen. But yeah, sorry for derail thing, its just that like one poster said, this has happened recently a lot. Poster making one angry thread and then not replying ever back I mean.
  4. POSSIBLE SPOILERS IN WHOLE POST, I*M NOT SURE HOW TO DO SPOILER TAG OR IF THIS POST IS ACTUALLY SPOILERY, JUST BEING CAREFUL Hey, every XCOM game gotta have flying aliens! They are just usually combined with another alien type for some reason. I mean, Tentaculats for example combine Floater and Chrysalid I'm not sure if there is niche for psychic aliens since rather many aliens have psychics...
  5. You missed my point. UFO: Extraterrestrials failed because it didn't have its own good parts, its good parts were copied from another game. UFO: Alien Invasion is good example of that done right. Its another fan remake of original game, just like Xenonauts, but while it has core features from original game same, it has enough new features/changes to feel like its own game. Xenonauts is doing it right by taking core features from original game, but changing some things for sake of balance or for better.
  6. Possible spoilers to anybody who isn't Gorlom or who has seen that video: Yeah, I'm sorry for possibly spoiling it by mentioning what I thought it looked like Non spoilers: And yeah, Gorlom will have vendetta against me for rest of my life Also, random guess on its ability: Well, this has nothing to do with what it looks like, but since its Chrysalid type monsters and developers have said "It has second ability besides turning into zombies" it means that Reaper most likely won't have ability to turn your agents to more reapers or control them like brainsuckers. Why? Because I consider Chrysalid type monsters be Chrysalids, Tentaculats and Brainsuckers. All three of them turn your agents somehow into enemies. So if Reaper zombies won't result in bursting out more reapers, but since Brainsuckers are from unpopular game meaning that reapers still have to somehow create more reapers(ok, this is bad sentence grammar wise. I meant that Chrysalids and Tentaculats created more of themselves while brainsuckers just died and controlled your units. I mean that developers might not consider Brainsuckers to be "Chrysalid" type monsters if they don't like Apocalypse resulting in that they believe that Chrysalid type monsters have to create more of themselves) and not just turn everybody into zombies, I guess Reapers split into more reapers when they die while reapers they split into won't split into more when they die because that would be broken Continuing on that idea, maybe it would go like this: Original XCOM game had Chrysalid research text claim that Chrysalids that burst out from killed zombies are weaker than ones that burst out themselves, but stat wise they were identical in game. Maybe Reapers will split into two weaker reapers who can't split more unless you wait enough for them to "grow" back to adult reaper which will split more. Of course, thats probably not going to happen, but I figured out I had to tell most logical outlandish idea I got so it would be out ruled If reapers look like what I think they do, they don't really look like they split into more ones. So it would be surprise if that would actually happen Idea does have rather interesting twist to it, with Chrysalid type monsters you usually think "CRAP, shoot it, shoot it before it comes close!" but if creature would itself split into more, you would think more than just how to prevent it coming close as you will create more trouble for you if you have to deal with two creatures instead of one capable of creating zombies out of you. And if split up creatures can "grow" to be able to split up again, you will want to destroy splitted up creatures before they can split up more. Plus its nice surprise for XCOM veterans who notice that these creatures can turn you into zombies, I mean, would anybody expect that to happen? ...Dang, thats long speculation wall of text ._. Oh well, it does sound cool as idea, but I doubt anybody will include that in XCOM type game in looong time Alternate outlandish idea would be that they combine Chrysalids with Brainsucker pods. Aka, they are able to shoot eggs that will hatch into Reapers that won't be able to breed more eggs because that would be broken if they could spawn infinitely reapers at distance and are still able to turn you into zombie.
  7. Yeaaaaah, its like they got angry at something, made post while angry, then forgot about it afterwards and never come back to check.
  8. I'm kind of wondering whether op was a troll or someone who plays himself up to be victim and is now away "Because they are fanboys" .-. I mean, he was talking about how forums aren't kind to newbies, which isn't true as it completely depends on forum
  9. I mean, mods can be good and stuff, but usually they either just add more stuff to game(which isn't that interesting usually) or they change the way game plays so much that you could as well play different game. Its... Hard to explain. Anyway, nothing is wrong with mods, I just prefer vanilla. Besides, mods aren't accessible to everyone, so if Reaper Hive would just be mod, it wouldn't be something common with all Xenonaut players, it wouldn't be something you would mention in reviews or what you would mention Xenonaut to have that no other XCOM clone has.
  10. I hope small talk option will be in final version, I love small details like that :3
  11. Yeaaaaah, every mission type gets boring if repeated too much hence why its nice when you have tons of them to sometimes have. Though its not good if you have so many mission types that you will never see some of them.
  12. He believes that marketing mistakes will lead to devs possibly grabbing money in the "Welp, everyone who is going to buy the game has already pre ordered it through Desura or Kickstarter, no body will eeeeeeeeeever buy it afterwards so we won't get anymore money so better save more money for us at expense of game" way Which doesn't really make sense considering that not everyone has heard of Xenonauts and not everyone uses Kickstarter or pre orders games. Besides, I have bought games from steam or gog that are years old, games will sell after years of release.
  13. Well, I guess it could be added as mod or game modifier like Iron Man mode where you can tick it on if you want them to spawn anywhere on map
  14. Hey, its not like I INTENTIONALLY spoiled it by describing what I saw Anyway, BE CAREFUL OF SPOILERS, EVEN JUST CLICKING THE LINK CAN SPOIL YOU, ONLY ALIEN WE ALREADY HAVE SEEN IN VIDEO IS RED COLORED ANDRON, THERE AREN'T SEBILIANS OR CAESANS SO REST OF THEM ARE ONES WE HAVEN'T SEEN YET, THOUGH YOU DON'T REALLY NEED TO CLICK RIGGING VIDEO BUTTON AS ICON FOR THAT BUTTON SEEMS TO BE WHAT WE GUESS TO BE IT http://www.iamgregamato.com/ SO YEAH, YOU CAN'T BLAME ME FOR SPOILING YOU AS I PUT SPOILER WARNING IN CAPS
  15. Huh? Is that in game picture or actual satellite picture? I guess its latter because you can't zoom that far yet at least ._. But yeah, that would be cool if they would do that, so hopefully this is something that can still be implemented.
  16. @Flashman: I recommend you to play Apocalypse again as it DOES have different maps. Maps for schools, cultist church, parks, hospitals, futuristic recycling station thing, senate, stadium, apartments, police station, sewer, factories, ufos, alien buildings, etc. It just doesn't have different short of terrains, but it has great variety of different locations. @wiglaf: Actually, UFO: Exterrestials failed BECAUSE it was too close to the original game. I mean, original version of it was apparently changing guite many bits of it but mod that changes it to closer to XCOM is better than that one. Thing is, UFO: Exterrestials doesn't held up as its own game at all, superficially it has changed some points(Like completely new set of aliens, except for Sybians which are Snakemen renamed, different location than earth, different base system, less detailed research texts, more research, etc) I do consider UFO: Exterrestials 7/10 game. It is okay and can be fun, but its good parts come from how much it copies from original game. Though original version of game had revive from death soldiers and apparently only 20 soldier names considering that one of mods is "Thousands of new names, original only had 20 or so" so "poor man's" version might be actually accurate referring to non Gold Edition of the game with Brian's mod(I think it was Brian..: Maybe it was Bman... Anyway, some B guy's mod)
  17. I do have seen video of 3d renders of aliens(apparently sprites are created based on those) so I can find that for you if you are keen to spoil yourself I have faint guess which one of those is Reaper.(Really, when you see it, you'll guess its most likely that one)
  18. I'm personally glad they went with sprites because I love sprites. But yeah, I'm kind of sad how bad experience stretch goals/Kickstarter have been to devs so far =/ I mean, I like stretch goals. Though I do dislike ones that claim "We can only implement this feature if we can get this amount of money!" ones, I mean Xenonaut ones are "If you get enough extra money to development, we will add this feature as thank you!" while former doesn't really make sense. I mean, if original goal is 25,000 and stretch goal is 50,000 does stretch goal really require that much money to put it in game? I prefer them when developer says it to be reward, not that they need that much extra to put it in. ...Ahem, I got sidetracked. Anyway, I meant that I'm sad at how there aren't going to be any more stretch goals in future (Secretly hoping Reaper Hive somehow getting in game), but its not like pledging has been very fast anyway. Anyway, I just hope stuff up to pilot pics/callsigns get added.
  19. I'm interested in what particular arguments he was parodying not how he did it
  20. Hmm, yeah, trolls shouldn't be feed, but it would be rude to assume hes troll just because he has unpopular/annoyingly cynical opinion. Then again, most good trolls aren't obvious ones... Oh well, I still like debating
  21. Nobody nowadays believes in "Doing it for the sake of art" it seems This is another thing what I meant, people seem to lack belief that some people might truly do it for sake of art/project instead of profit. As if they can't see why somebody would do that. Not that devs don't want to make any profit from this(after all, having worked three years on project is tiring and you have to pay salary to people. Everyone wants some kind of rewards for their work after all.), don't get me wrong, its just you are too eager to believe that they will on purpose make game worse in order to hold more money for themselves later. I'm pretty sure most artists/developers/directors/whatever of any sort have pride in their own work, while they do want to get rewarded for their own work/realize its impossible for them to do it without getting anything in back, they don't do it just for sake of getting money. Xenonauts is kind of niche game because it aims to be remake of XCOM, so its aimed at XCOM fans mostly. You don't set out to make niche game in order to make money, you do that because you loved original work and wanted to do your own take on it. (BTW, sorry devs if I've assumed stuff wrong, I'm trying to think of it from my own perspective why I would want to do XCOM type of game if I could do XCOM type of game ^^; )
  22. Ah, dang it, I knew I forgot one from the list. Anyway Wiglaf seems to be good example of what I meant with "Naive cynic". I mean, does he have any good reason to assume that devs would screw pledgers over their money other than that it is theoretically possible for them to do it? Or that project will be just mediocre in the end? Besides that "They promised us [x] in year [before 2012]]" which I can't confirm as I haven't been here that long. Heck, Wiglaf hasn't either so I don't know what his source is. Either way, whether that is true or not it doesn't change the fact that that usually happens with all projects, never heard of project that was completely on time. While it is true that developers could lie to us about how well they are doing with the project, we don't have any concrete reasons to believe that. Anyway, what is point of investing in project if you lack faith for the project? Of course people will think you are being whiny, they wouldn't have invested in this if they wouldn't believe in it.
