Dudikoff
I don't know what changed between V21 stable and V1.0 regarding the LOS calculation, but the Aliens can now shoot through walls it seems.. So, I started a new game, got a report that local forces have downed a UFO and went for a mission. My soldier was behind some crates and couldn't see an alien standing behind a corner. On the next turn, alien had no problem seeing me and shot me, still behind the corner. Ok, I thought, let's say that standing there he can bend around the corner and shoot me. I bring another soldier to the same position as the alien moved one step further than the corner, behind the wall. But, on the next turn he just turned and shot me through the wall. To make matters worse, another alien, much further away in a house, shot my distant soldier through what had to be like two walls at least (a house wall damaged slightly and a concrete wall), not to mention that my soldier was also hidden behind some object. I was so shocked that I exited the game immediately and decided to go back to V21 stable where I had no issues (thus don't have a screenshot, sorry, but the map was some I didn't see before which looked like a freigh train station with some office building in the middle and some cargo wagons on the bottom right). Could it be a map-related issue as I don't see any other threads with people complaining about LOS issues. Sorry for not being able to provide any concrete proof of this issue. I guess the auto-save is there so I'll try again the same mission later.
Chris
Yeah, basically the LOS calculation is much more permissive than it used to be. Aliens aren't *actually* shooting through walls but it can sometimes look that way. It's something we'll probably look into again, but only after we have a genuinely stable build ready for widespread release first. Fiddling with the LOS system can cause a whole host of issues and if it does we'll want something else to fall back on.
Skitso
This kind of situation where LoF is totally straight, it feels super unfair that the alien can shoot me but I can't shoot back. Also, while alien can shoot me, it often hits the wall it stands behind, which looks a bit odd and shouldn't even be possible, if I understand correctly. Sorry for crappy pic. I'm at work and did it with paint.
dpelectric
I'm at work and did it with paint Lol. How do I get a job like yours? Edited June 1, 2014 by dpelectric
Chris
In that situation, the LOS would not be blocked for either unit. The system isn't *that* bad.
Skitso
@Chris: I just had that situation. @dpelectric: well, these sunday shifts are usually like this. Don't tell my boss... Edited June 1, 2014 by Skitso
Dudikoff
Yeah, basically the LOS calculation is much more permissive than it used to be. Aliens aren't *actually* shooting through walls but it can sometimes look that way. Mine was more like this. First an alien at red position 1. shot my blue position 1 (behind a brown half sized box). My soldier didn't see it. Next turn the alien moved away, so I brought another soldier at the same spot, this time he was shot through wall as pictured (the hidden movement clearly showed the alien). During the same turn, some distant alien behind the window shot my soldier through some wall with cracks and another wall very far away and my soldier was behind a half sized box also. Unfortunately, there was no auto-save present and I didn't have that map again yet so perhaps we could have a feature where the game would create a save automatically at the start of each mission? It could be the same autosave being overwritten every time. Also, I find this new best choice LOS feature weird as even if I have a row of full sized objects between me and an alien, I will still see him although the block of 100% would be indicated. I found the V21 implementation more logical where in this case I wouldn't see an alien at all. If this will be preserved the way it is now, could it be possible to actually have both mechanics to choose from in the options?
