late game: lack of alien alloys stops progression

It seems to easy to get into a situation where you have no alien alloys but you can't get more because you can't bring down any of the cruiser size ships. Getting a crew to a landed cruiser is tough to pull off. I'm in a spot where I can _almost_ bring down a carrier, but I don't have enough alien alloy to build plasma aircraft weapons or any gatling lasers.

It's looking like I'm pretty screwed. Maybe there should be a way to recycle plasma clips into alien alloys? I don't like games that let you go down hours-long dead-ends.

He's talking about the short range weapons. The gatling laser, plasma cannon etc. If you have the cash and time, building more hangers with more planes should let you take them down if you can't produce the guns. 12 day hanger time is killer though.

You'll learn a bit on the first playthrough, not guaranteed to win it. Which can be either nice or frustrating depending on your point of view I suppose.

This is probably my 8th play, first time I've gotten this far though. The thing that's bugging me is that I have a ran into a situation where I can't bring down the larger ships (cruisers and the like) with corsairs because they just get eaten up. Yet I can't build a marauder because I don't have enough unobtainium. Why don't I have enough unobtainium? Because in the generation before cruisers (landing ships?) I couldn't bring any of those down with the alenium missiles and gatling lasers that I had.

It feels like I'm in a catch-22 and as a player that's annoying. I don't like feeling like I took a wrong turn in a maze and now the game is over.

Another issue here is that, since it requires AAs to build a plane _you absolutely cannot lose a plane_ when you first start bringing down ships in the "medium" size range.

I think this could be solved by throwing in some scouts and light scouts in the medium sized UFO era. That way I'd be able to take down an easier ship to get enough resources to build a plane that would let me take on the medium sized ships.

Using alenium torpedoes against landing ships requires multiple sorties (or a bunch of MiGs after using condors/corsairs to kill any escorts). After you capture one though, you can get Plasma missiles/torps.

I think its planned to have the smaller ships appear during midgame too.

I have to agree with the resource shortage problem mid-game. And yeah, smaller UFOs should continue to appear sporadically even late in the game. Variety keeps the game interesting! IMO UFOs of all types should have a dramatically increased chance to land on their own. That would help players who find themselves unable to intercept get back in the game.

I definitely disagree with that. UFOs should only land when performing a mission.
