  1. I've come across a really interesting kickstarter for a game with turn-based combat with Angels, Demons, modern tech, magic and far more. Seeing as we're all here because we love that type of game (and most of us because of the original XCom games) I thought some of you might be interested. I'm not connected with the Kickstarter other than really wanting to play the game. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dreamlordsdigital/graywalkers-purgatory-turn-based-post-apocalyptic
  2. Bit late to the party but... great news, and keep up the excellent work. I'm steering clear until the final beta now so I get the full effect of the game (thanks and respect to all those getting involved in the testing and making the game better).
  3. I'm getting the same "empty hangar" problem, building a second spare now to see if that works.
  4. Ah - I hadn't noticed that the basic weapons were all unlimited. So has the need to buy things been removed?
  5. I haven't played in quite a few months so maybe I'm just being stupid, but I can't work out how to buy things in the beta (weapons, planes etc). Can someone point out the stupid mistake I'm making? :-)
  6. Indie games get delayed, improved then released. Big budget titles also get the same problems but they are often just released with all the bugs and issues but still tagged as being the "finished" product.
  7. I didn't get stung on that particular game but I completely agree - and this is one reason that the indie / kickstarter / Xenonauts model is such a good one. Games should no longer be pushed out incomplete (except as alpha / beta tests) and developers will just about always want to get the best game out there they can. I disagree on the refunds though - when games have been costing between £30 and £50, and even higher at one point, that's a lot of money for some people. They might only be able to buy one game a month. If that game, which would have been sold as a "complete" game, turns out to be buggy and unplayable it's not unreasonable that they want their money back so they can buy something else.
  8. Except as the money keeps ticking up they keep increasing what will be in the game (3 new systems and a new ship type just in the past few days). The more money they get the more they can build in from the start.
  9. I think this is off Green Light and onto Steam proper now, but I just came across it - "Don't Starve". Absolutely brilliant survival game, and when you die certain progress (unlocked skills) persist so you do feel that you are making progress. Still in Alpha / Beta (says both in different places) but great to play already.
  10. I thought that a year ago when I paid for the Xenonauts Alpha... looking good so far. :-)
  11. My first crash had a single survivor then the next 3 or 4 had none (so I moved everyone around on the first turn then the mission ended). I've been told this shouldn't happen (was referred to here ) so reporting it as a bug.
  12. OK - thanks for the feedback. I'll try to be a bit less rough on them next time. :-) Though the game might need to suggest that to new players to the genre (and, obviously, certain old hands like me)
  13. Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere already. Firstly - wonderful to be playing Xenonauts after XCOM:EU -- I had my first two UFOs at the same time, and seven within a few days. Actually feels like there's an alien invasion. I haven't played the Alpha for some time so not sure if this is new, but my first crash had a single survivor then the next 3 or 4 had none (so I moved everyone around on the first turn then the mission ended), then again I had a crash with just a single survivor. I'm playing on normal mode but even so this seems a bit too easy. Have I just been really lucky or do other people see this too?
  14. I find Desura to be really good normally, but most games (I've bought at least) are a lot smaller. It seems to struggle with the size of Xenonauts.
  15. Fair point - but it doesn't change the fact that they are selling us things that in the past would have been added to a game as part of a standard update for free. As a counterpoint see Star Citizen - they are committed to adding free new content to the game every week or two. (Assuming I read it correctly).
  16. I'd have to disagree - but it's very much a subjective thing. For me Elite in particular was great because you felt you were out there exploring, but also because it stayed exciting. Jump into the wrong system and even a fully loaded ship could get into trouble. Have a jump drive malfunction and a Thargoid ship could tear you apart. Wing Commander was designed to be a series of missions in which you have ships attacking in waves, there are still games like that being produced these days and we don't criticise them for not being open ended - it was never designed to be. The storylines were engaging, had strong characters and made you really care about what happened in the end. In X I spent a long time sitting around twiddling my thumbs, found that as I got larger ships the smaller ones often just streaked off out of range. I wanted to like it, and put a lot of time into it, but wasn't really enjoying it much. Often I found myself sitting reading a book or playing another game on the laptop while playing it. I know that there are many people who love it though, as I said - it's personal. What there is no doubt about though is the huge number of people like me who are seeking games that carry on what Elite, Privateer and Wing Commander started. Somehow nothing that has come since has filled that hole, but both Elite:Dangerous and Star Citizen are looking really good.
  17. As the explosive / fire / smoke angle has been thoroughly explored I'm thinking of the leaving tracks options some more. So - we could have footprints in... Mud Oil (or would it be footprints after walking in oil) Snow (already covered I think) Also - some things could be pushed through but would then leave a gap... thin hedges thin fences -- pretty sure a burly xcom squaddie could batter through a picket fence glass windows -- maybe at the cost of some health
  18. Not sure if the game engine can cater for bodies of water (yet?), but if it can then you could have ice over lakes - if it's hit then the ice melts dropping you in. Hitting an area of ice with explosives could be a way of dunking (maybe drowning?) aliens standing there.
  19. Doh! That's where I got it from last time. Thanks for pointing me the right way.
  20. Failed again on Desura... "There was an error during the MCF download process and it has been stopped. All Server connections failed. Please check you are connected to the internet and try again or check console for more info." 20:40 Mcf download thread errored out. Id: 1, Error: Couldn't resolve host name (NULL/mcf) [Could not resolve host: NULL; No data record of requested type] [6]
  21. Played the new XCOM, enjoyed it quite a lot, finished it and have no desire to ever play it again (I aborted one campaign halfway through and the second campaign was like a carbon copy). It was very slick but very much a game on rails. I'm particularly annoyed to see add on content being sold which doesn't really add anything useful - Chris, please don't fall into that trap. I have no issue with paying for real additional content but "additional council missions" is the sort of thing that should be added as a free update. Anyway - still really looking forwards to Xenonauts hitting beta and then being complete.
  22. Thanks Tass - but I have the (ongoing) problem that Desura refuses to update properly, failing part way through. I've tried four times now. The last standalone version I had was a good while back and I haven't been playing via Desura for a while either. Can you give me the link for the v16.1 zip so I can then patch it up?
  23. The Wing Commander series and Privateer were amongst the best space flight games ever written, together with Elite they defined the genre - and games like X3 owe much to them. I've played X3 and while it is reasonable it just doesn't approach the depth of immersion and shear fun of those early games, and Star Citizen looks to retain all that while making use of modern technology.
