[v22.8 hf1 - Ground Combat] Game freezes when killing an alien

Recommended Posts

Sup, guys. I'm facing a very boring freeze. At least two times per mission, every time I kill a specific alien the game freezes. The only work around I found is to avoid that alien for some turn, let him move, and them shot him... but to do it I have to play saving every time so it won't pisses me for making me lose all the progress of the mission, and I hate to play saving all the time, plus it can happen again with another alien... Despite that, the freeze seems more frequently in the begining of the mission, but it do happens some times at the end.

I'm using version 22 with hotfix 8. I'm using some mods, so here is the list:

- XNT Into the Darkness

- Jsleezy's Real Armor

- Jsleezy's Real Fighter Portrait*

* I just replaced the vanilla pics with his. I didn't used any .xml file since I think it will conflict with XNT.

- RMP Desert and Farm maps

- Skitsos Desert, Farm, Industrial and Middle East maps

It's a vanilla game bug? Maybe it's caused by XNT? Or RMP and Skitsos map are doing this?

I dont think it's any of Jsleezy's mods since I only replaced the pics...

Hello Victor,

I had run several test of V22 Exp 8, I found this one in Vanilla version. Even if you have the game heavy modded each of the mods that you use dont affect alien animation or hit calculations.

Real Armor and Portraits only mod images, Skitso and kabills maps add maps and tiles and XNT mod xml files that dont do nothing to damage calculations and alien animations.

I have some clue, we run about 20 hours of Vanilla and modded version in different computers. The game only show this crash and explotion crash on Win 8 computers and AMD graphics devices.

Experimental branch is unstable, has lot of issues and bugs. I hope it help.

NOTE: Update drivers, perform a system cleanup with CCleaner and reinstall both "steam" and "xenomauts".

If you want to give us more informations to take care the case search "Appcrash viewer" or "Xenodebugger". They help to track operative errors.

Thanks for the quick and complete awnser, TacticalDragon!

I'm aware I'm using a early-access game with an experimental patch and it risks, so I'm glad to know that it's a know bug! I believe it will be properly patched out with the given time!

I dont have Win8, but I do have a AMD graphic device, so that may be the problem (an AMD Radeon HD 7800, just to add).

My drivers are updated, I will try the CCleaner and reinstall Xenonauts. I will try Appcrash viewer and Xenodebugger and see what can I do. Meanwhile there is something else I can bring here? Any log or maybe the save file? I will be glad to help!

Thank you for reporting, try only use Appcrash viewer just before the game crash. If you see listed an exception code entry c00047X is caused by something in the internal engine of the game.

Developers is still working on it.

Cost and benefit, Experimental brach give you lot of options at some costs.

But in case you didn't notice, those two reports have a problem... parts of they are in portuguese, my native and pc language. There is something I can do to give it to you guys in english, should I translate it by myself or those parts in PT are not important?

Ok lets work on this ones:

The first crash error is a BEX - c0000417 that is relate to Buffer Overflow, this errors is caused by OS and anti virus is quiet hard to repair and take diagnosis, most of the fix for that is work on hardcodes of the engine. The only thing you can try is put the program under DEP exception on windows, run as admin and add the program to exceptions of antivirus.

The second one is related to over use limit of Memory, like RAM Overflow. You ca try this one to avoid c000005 exception code. The program overpass the amount of Ram memory.

Put in you windows search box "CMD", run as administrator

Type in without the parenthesis "bcdedit /set increaseuserva 4000"

**Change the number 4000 to how much ram you have on your computer, I have 4gb, so its 4000, if you have 16 GBs RAM, put 16000.

I hope it help, but this game needs an improvement in memory ram use and speed up alien turns... :/

Thanks alot for the help, guy!

I tried to run Xenonauts as admin, added it to DEP exceptions (and restarted the pc, of course) and since I cant find where to put it in my AV exceptions I totally closed it. I also checked if it's allowed through the firewall and it's ok. The game still crashes in the same point. I will try to use the CCleaner and reinstall Xenonauts later. Anyway, here is the log with the DEP exception, admin mode and AV closed just in case. I dont know if it is changed or anything:

Plus to that, here is the savegame if you want to try it. There is just one alien in front of a bunch of xenonauts. Taking this alien down on that turn with whatever weapon results in a crash in my pc: http://www.filedropper.com/savefile

About the other crash, I did what you proposed, putting 8000 since I have 8gb ram. It only happened once, anyway, and since it was in the geoscape map it's not a big deal (it's always a matter of speeding up the time from the last save). Let see if it happens again.

I had test in all my versions your save file and I found something interesting.

The game crash in the same condition all the time and each version, modded or not modded. The condition is kill sebillian crouched and suppress.

If you let the turn pass and the alien go by suppression you can kill it without crash.

:) Maybe the report is the save file indeed. Thank you!

About your game, Is quiet interesting build that you make here, you want to defend all the planet!

I like your build of heavy carrier rocketer as a secondary weapon. What do you think about the XNT mod? Did you like the AI programed specially for that build? did you have any suggestion? Did you find it difficult?

I suggest you research Jackal armor soon as possible to reach manufacture and build 2 factories.

Any comment about the mod and suggestions can be made right here

Hmmm... maybe you had noticed exactly in what situation the crash happens. I will pay attention to see if it happens everytime the alien is suppressed and crouched. The crash also happen with Ceasans, but i never noticed if it is when he is suppressed and crouched too. Just to add... already completed the mission in the same fashion you did. I just dont killed him this turn, he moved, then he was shooted down.

Well, about the game and the mod... [nothing about the crash below here]

I dont play Xenonauts for something like a year and it's my first playthrough, plus I didn't had played it too much in the past anyway. The game evolved a lot so everything I'm doing is testing strategies... I dont know if it gonna work in fact, hahaha! I noticed I started with a lot of money in XNT so I decided that I should try to protect most of the world. I dont know if I will be able to fund it, as you can see the bases are not occupied yet, but I do pretend to shoot down at least scouts everywhere.

About the mod itself... I'm liking it a lot! It make squad play more important. It's easy to lose a team mate if you do something wrong, but so far it's also easy to keep everyone alive if you do everything perfectly (just fighting scout until now though). The aliens also seem more rational to me. They dont stay on the open without cover and if they start to be overrun, they retreat to a better location. I didn't saw they supporting each other side by side, like if they are operating in double or trio, but it seems that when one of them spots you, other comes from accross the map and try to flank you, so I never advance to much without covering my flanks. It's good! I remember back in good old UFO: Enemy Unknow days it never happens. I'm eager to see bigger fights!

About the rocketer... it's a build I started to do with XCom Apocalypse (best XCom to me). I think it's better if he operates with a standard weapon and less missiles so I have another barrel shooting while I try to spread the missiles across the squad so if he runs out, another soldier can supply him. For now I have only one soldier with a rocket launcher, but pretty soon I pretend to have more. I almost never use it in fact, but it's handy to have one RL when you need, where you need, with whom you need.

I only miss in this game the cannon and autocannon from original XCom... such cool weapons! Hahahaha!

I'm afraid I can't look into this bug because it crashes in the dev version on load - I assume it's because the mission is on a custom map that is not in the normal game.

Lots of people are reporting crashes / freezes when killing aliens, though. It's unlikely to be a problem with your computer.

Thanks for trying anyway, Chris! I will start a vanilla game only to see if I can spot the same crash and post the save file here.

But, anyway, since it's now kinda a know bug and it's on an experimental version, it dont worry me to much. It will be patched sometime and, despite being annoying, it's not game breaking so it's not cutting my fun out. I just need to save frequently in the combat so I can go back if the game crash. Plus I dont know if it is because of the stuff TacticalDragon suggested me to do, but it seems less frequently now.

Thank you for your support, I'm glad you enjoy it! Your tactic seems good for Normal or Easy difficulties, if you want to write back the result of you strategy, put a name on it, for example:

- Armor Push: Kirill create a tactic when you focus on research tanks and use tanks on every mission

- Mastermind, created by my, when you focus the game in build 6 laboratories ASAP to take advantage of enemy artifacts.

Your tactic is like defender or something like that. Delta Wing is similar, is developed by Korhang, he create 4 bases with hangars and 3 condors en each one with radars, it stop enemy invasion very successfully and world economy dramatically increase.

About the alien crash is quiet rare.... I strongly believe that some of this one can be caused by "local" permissions of Steams folders. Its not the first game that experiment this one.

My strategy seems to be working fine, by the way. It is really something like Delta Wing.

The problematic point is that I'm spending to much an too quickly, so sometimes I had to do some decisions. I rushed to Jackal armour right now, but even when I researched it, I didn't had the resources to produce one. I had to wait some UFOs to appear and capture, but since I shotdown almost all UFO I spot and seize them, the cash is always flooding in.

Nevertheless things seems to be improving, specially now that the Foxtrop came to the play and I can support distant bases with him. I have 5 bases right now: a main one with research, production, my landing forces and 3 Condors + 1 Foxtrop and 4 minor bases for now (1 Condor + Foxtrop, with radar, 2 missiles battery and 10 soldiers to defend). Not all of those 4 bases are totally operational, I still need some fighters and one of them is not guarded yet, but I'm working on it. When those 4 are 100%, I will put one more hangars there and build more 2 bases like those around the world or make and research/production specific base.

I dont know if the game plays like that normally or is the AI reacting to the UFO shootdown mayhem I put early game, but they already are bringing bigger ships (corvettes) and always spawing in large numbers. It's challenging and exciting! Really feels like they are reacting to my moves!

Since you mentioned it, my game crashed when alien is shooting at me. But when I try that save(since it is ironmen) without start the game on steam, the bug just gone.

Yes I notice this one too, steam folders dont have normal privileged compared to normal windows folder.

Can you post this in XNT Official Topic? Moderators or Chris could be upset.

The only problem of use Delta Wing is in Veteran difficulty because UFO speed is increased. If you use Delta Wing successfully you can practically stop heavy alien invasion and world money will be increased. IN Tier 1+ when you reach 4 bases with MIGs your practically unstoppable for long waves until heavy alien fighters or Massive Alien Ships appear.

Enjoy! Thank you for your comments!

Is your Steam files installed in the Program Files folders? I would suggest you moving it somewhere else, like C:/Steam, to avoid problems. I already have problems in some games about Steam permission and moving it from the Program Files folder solved the problem.

I'm already posted something like that in this topic and will post something more detailed there. I'm justing waiting to have some energy weapons so I can say exactly how the early game was and what strategy did I used. The game is about to be launched, anyway, so when it happens I may start another one in a higher difficulty and in Ironman mode since I already have a feeling of it.
