Windows becomes unresponsive while playing Xenonauts

Recommended Posts

First time happened with version 9.3.1 i think, in ground combat during hidden movement on alien or civilian turn. I thought this was related to the Hidden Movement Screen Freeze. However i had those before and the game was still responsive (it didn't crash, was able to close it down normally). What this did however, was that it made the game and also Windows completely unresponsive too. Only solution was to shut down the computer.

Happened a second time yesterday with version 9.5, also in ground combat, but this time during the debriefing screen after civilian turn after i had killed the last alien, pressed End Turn and won.

As far as i know, user-mode programs shouldn't be able to do this (excluding input unresponsiveness, caused by low level hooks, but i'm not sure if that's the case here), and it has happened previously with Far Cry 2 in conjunction with some visible graphical artifacts in specific areas of the horizon in vegetation. The freezing was fixed by updating display drivers, and i notice that Catalyst 12.4 is available now, so i'll try that.

There were no graphical glitches present while the game and Windows froze this time around though.

So i'm not sure if this is a bug in Xenonauts considering these two things, but it's a bad problem, as i wouldn't want everything to crash while playing Xenonauts.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Specs:

Windows 7 64-bit

Display driver version: Catalyst 12.3

AMD Phenom 2 x6 3.2 GHz

8 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz RAM

Asus AMD Radeon HD 6950 2 GB

Yep this will happen reasonably frequently. Generally speaking it will only now happen on the battlescape - most of the Geoscape bugs have been ironed out. Best bet is to save regularly on the geoscape and battlescape and don't have any work on in the background you don't want to lose (as a hard reset seems to be the only solution - particularly in base defense or terror missions) and you can't alt-tab out.

Yeah. It can be a bit unstable at times. That's the problem with playing a game that's only half-finished, I'm afraid. Something things go quite seriously wrong. Hopefully come beta all these bugs will be gone.

EDIT - Hmmm, my initial reply was probably a little dismissive of this issue. If WINDOWS is becoming unresponsive when playing Xenonauts, that's a pretty major issue. If Xenonauts is crashing or becoming unresponsive, then that's worth reporting but it's part and parcel of the development process.

If WINDOWS is becoming unresponsive for you, then chip in on Munchimon's thread here: http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com/f...eeze-Hard-Lock

Huh  Thanks for the replies. I'm actually surprised, since i didn't notice anyone else reporting that also Windows freezes along with the game or that they would have to do a hard reboot.

This kind of problem is so rare that it led me to believe there is some protection against problems like these. So that the worst a programmer could cause for a regular program like a game is a regular crash "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" for example. Pretty hard to debug a problem that simply causes everything to freeze.

Same here, version 17.51 hangs quite often (together with Windows).

It happens every time I try to play, usually in the geoscape (didn't even get to the mission).

Could it be the fault of Windows 8?

Other specs:

Win 8 (64 bit)

Processor 2,26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB

This could be related to the old problem with mobile graphics cards.

They caused problems in previous versions where the geoscape map images would not load up, leaving you unable to play.

Apparently a lot of the people who reported that problem are no longer suffering with release 17.5.1

Just had a Hidden Movement crash in 17.52 unfortunately.

Was on the Arctic map. Had been several turns moving the tank around, and located the downed UFO

Took a shot at an alien standing outside, and successfully killed them.

When I ended my turn, the game crashed.. :(
