Air combat, do you autoengage?

No, but you can hit the space bar to pause it, so you can evaluate and give orders

so if you cant really get around to the back of the UFO is it ok to go in head-on and launch your missiles and then hightail it out of there and let your fighter dogfight?

I am having trouble with corvettes + 2 heavy fighters. I can autoengage but it seriously damages my planes

Corvette is slower than its escorts, just disengage all planes to the edge, use your dogfighter to kill the fighters, then torpedo the corvette.

Or if you spawn behind them, go max speed, torpedo the corvette first, then use the fighter to deal with the escorts while migs retreat.

so in the beginning my dogfighter would kind of be in the crosshairs of 2 heavy fighters and a corvette by itself? And it would win and kill the heavy fighters?

You could outmanouver 3 yes, Im not confident I could do that tho, corvette has 2 guns, one of which is rapid fire, Itd be much better to disengage far enough for you to have enough time to take out the escorts before the corvette is in range. Or rather you inside its range.
