  1. My issue with medkits is that I can't use them on the same soldier that is carrying them. If I have my leg shot up, I should be able to patch it. Having an arm blown off would ... complicate ... the issue, but not every wound is a crippling arm wound. And if my arm is far too wounded to patch up, then how come I have the ability to fire MGs, Rockets, and Sniper Rifles? These require the use of both limbs, and preferably a steady mount to shoot from. It is not possible to fire these one-handed, even with a supporting structure like a crate or low wall. If my arm is too badly injured to use a medkit, I should be relegated to using a pistol as well until healed.
  2. I too am glad to see you have reached the Steam milestone. I can't wait to convert over.
  3. You are teaching those kids properly. Raise up those future gamers of the world.
  4. I "captured" an alien that went down from smoke. However, I was not able to conduct any research on the captured alien. How did you get that project to start? Anyway, in game or not, Chris can build it out as far as he wants, and still use such a "gateway" mechanic to restrict access to further content. That was all I was saying.
  5. Until you can start to capture live aliens, you won't be able to get real far. I believe at this point you can unlock new Earth-based technologies, but very little alien tech. In the OG, much of that required a live alien Navigator or Engineer to pry the true secrets out. Not being able to build an alien containment system is a great way of blocking access to late-game content. There's only so much we can piece together from smoking corpses and shot-down metal.
  6. I tried tailing scouts to catch one at a landing spot, but they have so far either outlasted my interceptor fuel supply, or taken off before my groundpounders can get there. One time they actually took off right as the chinook got within range - that did not end well, very few survivors from the crash.
  7. What file do I need to look at to alter the time it takes to manufacture new items?
  8. I must sadly admit that I have lost many fine crews and boats to the pernicious tenacity of the Allied fleets. But not before littering the seabed with theirs as well! GWX forever!
  9. Chris, At this point, I know the next major release is the Beta v1 sometime around 9 October, barring any delays. Do you have any more hot fixes or content updates on the board for between then and now? I'm really enjoying the game so far, but I keep bumping up against Alpha limitations.
  10. Just a way to complete the mission so you don't have to get killed by any other aliens.
  11. Well, it's great while I can do it then. I had a feeling it was too good to be true...
  12. That is why I made the post. Feedback for the balance phase when it comes.
  13. I think you hit the nail on the head. At the start, I'm feeling good. My conventional weaponry are knocking down scouts, and I'm able to shoot them up with small arms. Life is good! Then the tide turns. Fighter swarms start knocking out my interceptors, and I lose them faster than I can get more. The first time I fight armored Sebillians and Caesans, and my assault rifles are bouncing off their armor, I know things are going south in a hurry. This reminds me of the U-Boat war in WWII. At first, the U-Boats were rolling out and sinking everything in sight (the Happy Times). Then the superior technology of the Allies came to the fore, and the U-Boats started getting sunk, and never recovered (the Sour Pickle times). Then they lost the war. Hopefully my operations will be more successful, but I'm not feeling it yet.
  14. What I really like about this hypervelocity is when I know there is an alien inside the wreck, and I set up my LMG gunners and just spray the wreck from the outside. The bullets don't seem to always penetrate the hull, but enough of them do that I end up killing the alien (and sometimes his unseen buddy). To me, this is absolutely great. I feel like after all the abuse we've taken from the alien scum, it's nice to be on the right side of a Bonnie and Clyde ending. More dakka dakka!
  15. I'm doing great shooting down alien UFOs now thanks to all the help in my previous thread. Now I'm trying to fine-tune my strategies. I'm over-killing the targets. This is what I'm using on each kill: Fighters - no crash, so irrelevant Small Scout - two sidewinders Medium Scout - four sidewinders Corvette - two sidewinders, two avalanche (1 Mig's payload) Landing Craft - two sidewinders, two avalanche (1 Mig's payload) These attack strategies get the UFO knocked down, but it's damn hard on the wreck. I get a lot of dead and wounded aliens, and very little loot to recover. I've thought about using guns, but it's harder to catch the smaller ships, and the big ones I'm afraid will kill fighters. I don't have enough fighters to keep them in the repair bay, either. I'm clearly over-damaging the UFOs, but I'm in need of a better way to attack them to minimize damage to both my interceptors and my target so I can get undamaged power cores sooner. Thanks!
  16. Am I the only one who thinks that the manufacturing of laser weaponry is taking a little too long? Based on last night's experience, they are taking about 240 man-hours to make a laser rifle. In just a few days, I can make a Mig Interceptor, or a couple of laser rifles. Just seems too long to me. The reason I'm whining about this is because I finally am able to build these things, but the moment the research is unlocked, I'm fighting armored Caesans and Sebillians. These are almost impossible to kill with small arms (I've killed zero with assault rifles), and I'm only having mediocre results with LMG and sniper rifles. I really need laser weapons.
  17. The Medium Landing Craft got me my power core. It wasn't hard to bring down with Migs, but clearing the wreckage was horrible. I lost half my troops.
  18. Green means the missile will fire as soon as it is in range with a lock. Red means it is on hold. You have to fire it by clicking on it. If you already know to stagger your missiles, then you have this down. I will start a new game tonight, and see if I can manage to break through the UFO fighter packs. I think maybe I'm spending way too much money building more bases, money that I need to replace interceptors as they are getting shot down. Does anyone have a good general concept on how to fight a 3v3 battle between fighters? Should I jump all three on one at a time, or go one to one? I did not know that the Mig could carry sidewinders on all four hardpoints. This is good to know.
  19. I don't hae Migs. Just the stock Interceptors. Guess I should have focused on more on getting those, but I thought they were only useful for taking down bigger UFOs than I had seen so far. Interceptors seemed the logical choice for air superiority work. So instead, I built a couple additional radar bases in Europe and Africa to support my main base. This is probably where my funding problems came from.
  20. I think I'm two months in. I'm getting swarms of enemy fighters, and have no capability of defeating them. I use Interceptors in packs of three. I fire the first missile at each fighter (1:1 ratio), and the second one a few seconds later to catch them after the barrel roll. More often than not, I still end up losing the battle. Would Alenium missiles help in this respect? Can enemy fighters still dodge them? I'm losing so many fighters that I am almost immediately rendered incapable of engaging them anymore. Sending out the Chinook is pure suicide at this point, even when I do manage to catch a scout. HELP! Please?
  21. Just happened to me a few times tonight. Reaction fire appears to be the trigger: kill an alien and the game just stares at the body. Only workaround right now is restart the battle.
  22. That would explain it then. Yes, I was looking at the splash screen. Thanks!
  23. So I'm confused. When I launch my current build, it says "Alpha Build V13, 31 July 2012". There are hotfixes available since that date. Desura is supposed to auto-update, but does not appear to be doing so. How can I make this happen? I've tried doing a verify files, and restarting my Desura client. The only reason I'm worrying about this is because the build I have is currently unplayable due to the combat crash. This is where the game goes into combat mode (when your dropship lands at a crashed UFO), and you can't move any squad members. Thanks!
  24. I'm watching/waiting for it, but I haven't been overly impressed yet from the beta footage. I will definitely be trying it out when it releases, but cash will be waiting for final evaluation.
