Research Tree am I missing something

I got the message you should research laser. After researching both plasma weapons. I then got the message you should research stun weapon and a grenade. I haven't seen anything beyond researching alien types. Have I missed something? I see people talking about Laser Weaponry. But I don't seem to be able to research anything right now.

Question 2. I have another question. I have killed about 30-40 fighters no scouts or anything else any more. I guess there is still more balancing coming. So many fighters in the air I can't even try to get to terror points. I have four planes and cycling out damage planes continuously try to get enough in the air to take down the swarms. Is this typical?

1:

When you shoot down Scouts (not Light Scouts), you will get a Power Core when you complete the crash site providing you don't overdamage the UFO.

Once you've got that you can research Alien Power Core -> Alenium + Alien Alloys -> Alien Fabrication Techniques and THEN you'll be able to research Laser Weapons and Wolf Armour.

2:

Yes, currently it's typical as too many fighters spawning is a known issue. It's not designed to be that way in the final game.

As an aside, both your questions have been asked quite a bit, especially the research one. A quick search on the forum would have answered your questions.

ok i did do some searches with Laser weapons as my search and didn't find anything. I read through the FAQ but didn't find anything. Thanks for the info. I just joined and read a lot of mesages but there seems to be a lot of information and just trying to parse through it is a challenge. I should be keeping up now :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I am just struggling. I can't seem to run the individual ships down. They outfly me. Do I have to have a full flight of Mig's? I try to run down individual ships and they outrun me (I can't even engage them in combat) If I don't kill the couple of the three flights of escorts then I get into trouble. The air combat is making it tough for me currently :)

Remember, a squadron is as fast as it's slowest plane on the geoscape. If you pair migs and f-17s, they're all going to fly at f-17 speed. To catch up with lone scouts, you're going to need one or more migs that don't have any f-17s holding them back.

I made a post in the suggestions forum about toning down air combat difficulty and someone told me that the small scouts have been upgraded in speed in the last patch, an undocumented change. Right now they're at 2300, but apparently if you lower the speed to 2100 your f17s can engage them when they intercept the ufo head on. You might try making that change, it sounds like it'll fix much of both our problems. I will for myself, as soon as I figure out which file it's in.

Small scouts were 2300 speed in January, doesn't appear to have changed since then.

*edit* Actually there were only scouts back then, no light scouts but they took the same role.

Oh yeah, they've been the same speed forever, but I'm still fairly certain something was changed on how either movement or interception is made, because at one point F17's had no issue with them at all up until a couple of builds ago.
