  1. Pretty sure it's the command center. I can't remember how many turns you need to hold it for, though.
  2. Shock grenades do hp damage as well as stun damage. That's probably why you killed it.
  3. I doubt it, gains are tallied up when the mission has been successfully completed iirc. C4 may work though, it has better breaching capability than rockets and may be able to destroy walls within the ufo. If not walls, then doors.
  4. C4 or Rockets to create new entrances to rooms? Sacrificial pawn to get some reaction out of the Sebs? Retreat from the mission?
  5. Why are players complaining about the difficulty of insane mode? It's called insane mode for a reason, read the description.
  6. Have you beaten the game on veteran yet? Or are you one of those players who jump to the hardest difficulty in the name of challenge? If you are, you shouldn't be complaining about how difficult it is to win, then. If you made any progress on Veteran I would assume that you have knowledge of effective tactics for taking down units in close-quarter combat.. Based on your refusal to try different tactics (shotgun/carbines) to take out units and your insistence that the situation is impossible based on bringing up the worst case scenario as an argument, I don't know what to think. You really need to avoid limiting yourself to one or two strategies though, there's always a situation where you'll need to mix it up to be more effective.
  7. Player plays on insane mode, complains about X being OP. Play on veteran, then.
  8. Losing funding due to alien activity should be expected in the first few months. Losing funding and even one or two nations doesn't mean you're playing poorly imo, and I think this needs to be emphasized. In fact, looking at funding lost over a month, the required minimum before you lose a nation and deciding how to update your global coverage is a part of the geoscape strategy. Even deciding to cut off certain areas (like Australia) in order to maximize funding and coverage in other areas (like the Western Hemisphere) is a part of it. Once again, losing funding is to be expected; that's my experience, at least. What really matters is losing enough to fall behind financially and being able to adapt accordingly.
  9. I doubt this will happen, it's been mentioned quite a few times already. Best bet is to hope for a mod that includes it, the vanilla game is complete.
  10. Players will get tired of what's presented sooner or later, or find the optimal way to play which most players will flock to; there is no stopping this. There is enough variety in the source game now to keep it fresh for a long time, it's up to the players to mix things up. As for your fighting game analogy, that specifically is wrong. Unless you're playing against the AI (irrelevant), one or two tactics will not grant you success past the beginner level. Once you move beyond that point, players understand how to counter said tactics and you should begin to understand that you either adapt or lose; sticking to your example, the SF franchise is balanced well enough to the point where this is true for just about every game. Making an analogy to a game designed to be played with more than one player, where the opponent has access to every option that you have AND has the intelligence to use them in a similar manner and counter them effectively, which changes the match completely, isn't a very good call, imo. Although I could just be completely off here and what you're asking for is better AI or enemies with enough advantages to fall in line with the advantage of player intelligence? Or maybe you just wanted something that didn't attempt to stick to the original XCOM so closely? In which case, why complain about it when that's one of Xenonaut's selling points? Why not check the mod section to see if anybody is working on what you would have liked instead of claiming the game is "broken" because it doesn't meet your requirements? Hell, maybe less people would have been interested if the weapon progression was different, what makes you so sure that your opinions are the best? What you're basically saying is, more players would prefer what you think should have been included in game, which doesn't have enough supporting evidence on its own to be accurate. Edit: To be fair, I do understand what your complaint is. But I can guarantee giving the player a more varied tech tree wouldn't change the fact that the enemy progression is unable to stop a "basic" tactic from taking you through the game easily (assuming this is even true). What's to stop you from just repeating the same tactic with the same equipment types instead of using all the new shiny equipment that allows you to fly, shoot rockets into the air and any other fancy things you can name? There's only so much the AI can cover, you probably need a difficulty mod (or insane mode) to get the challenge that you want. Unless it's really just a case of "I wanted to see x, but it's not in so the game isn't worth my time"?
  11. I doff my hat to Chris and the team for producing a fantastic game while sticking to their script and not succumbing to scope creep. Sure, the game isn't perfect in my eyes, but I realize that there will always be things I would have liked to see implemented to make it a more enjoyable experience for myself. Also, I am grateful to the fantastic work the modding community is putting in with regards to giving me free access to those features I feel the game is lacking. The developers can only do so much, please understand that.
  12. "I'm not saying Xenonauts is a bad game. Far from it! It's a good game. It's polished, pretty, rather deep and atmospheric. But my point is, it could easily have been a great game if Chris&Co. had more courage and farsight! Right now it's a ~80% game, if I dare use the horrid Metacritic scale. It could have been 90+. The foundations are there. " Time and money has to be there, dude. This game was supposed to be released back in early 2013, iirc. As it is, with the resources they had starting out, I would take mods to suit your needs as a wonderful solution instead of "it should have been what I wanted" (this modding community is amazing, btw). But to each his own, I suppose. Edit: Also, calling the game "broken" is pure opinion. I don't really have an issue with upgrades to current weapons, and I know there are many that are fine with it. Mods exist for those who want a different experience than the base game provides, it's up to you to apply them.
  13. I'm pretty sure Mind Control was nerfed to be Line-of-sight only. The errant rocket hitting the wall in front of you can be pretty easily avoided by standing in front of the window...unless I'm completely missing the problem there?
  14. Sure, it's not pretty. But I love the setting, the level of control that you have over your units, the level of challenge in both the ground combat and the geoscape, the feeling that Geoscape strategy actually matters and being free to figure out how to make my preferred builds work. Plus, the game mechanics are solid, AI is great overall and actually fits the units pretty well, nice clean UI, a real sense of hard decisions to be made in terms of keeping funding blocs in the game, etc. It may just not be your type of game, though. I know the lack of glamour will be a big turn-off for many and it does take a bit of time to get comfortable with everything, especially Air Combat and how to approach the Geoscape. Edit: The modding community is AMAZING, which pretty much guarantees awesome additional content, especially with the source code being opened up to the most dedicated. Just check the mod thread now and see how much work has gone into the game; this was being completed even before release!
  15. You don't have to read a guide to play/finish the game (I didn't need one when I started, and I have never played anything like X-Com). It's just that many players complain about not understanding how Geoscape works, so the community made a guide to make things easier for them. The only thing I needed assistance in was air combat and figuring out the specifics on certain structures; base placement and set-up I could figure out on my own (expand global coverage > tricking out your single squad of soldiers, make sacrifices on the Geoscape accordingly, etc). You can't really blame the design if people don't realize that covering as much area as possible per base is ideal and that you'll never cover the entire world with a single base (common sense). The game isn't really too punishing at all if you use your head, imo. =/
  16. Bravery, accuracy, reflexes. In that order, imo.
  17. To be fair, you don't have to place your first base in North Africa, that could be your second while you cover the Americas first. Next, the way UFO activity plays out should pretty much determine where your second base goes. For example, in my current playthrough the Soviet Union is getting pounded so I'm opting to place my second to cover that area instead of going straight to Central America, which hasn't been too badly affected. Pumping 2 additional radars early gets you max coverage and you can afford it so why not? What I really think the game needs now is some super obvious sign saying that the first/second months are rough and you should expect funding to decline since you don't have a lot of coverage yet. I'm still noticing that the issue is players don't like losing resources because they think they should have an immediate answer to the coverage issue, when they really shouldn't. Either that or they can play on Normal?
  18. Fire in the Hole and a map pack. But, I tried verifying the cache and that resolved the issue.
  19. When attempting to access the other tab, I experience a CTD. This happens regardless of my current soldier's current equipment and is pretty significant; I lose access to med kits, shields, stun batons, etc. Save game can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kjre64pq68qm4p4/Main%20%20Veteran.sav This happens even if I create a new game.
  20. It looks like the latest build broke the "Other" tab in the equipment screen. Whenever I try to access it, the game crashes.
