How do smoke grenades work?

Smoke grenades.

Do you need to stand inside the smoke to make yourself safe?

or

Is it a better idea to throw the smoke between you and the enemy?

Considering I've replayed Xenonauts for the 5th time now, its silly to ask this now, but better late then never.

Smoke grenades decreases the hit chance per tile. So how many smoke tile between you and enemy, it is more safety. If you know the enemy, throw it between you and him. You dont know, just on your knees.. bite it!!!

But it lowers your acc too.. so i think the best time is an end of turn or waiting an ambush..
