Out of curiosity, I googled sci-fi movies released in 1979 (the year Xenonauts takes place) and here's what I came up with:

Got to love that Alien came out then, I wonder if the creators knew that? How funny would it be if you were watching Alien when the aliens invade? Talk about coincidence.

I think the civilians in Xenonauts are very confused that things from Close Encounters and Star Wars didn't quite work out as they thought it would.

For the tuppence it's worth, lots and lots of stars in those films.

Stalker, Quintet and Death Watch were all pretty influential in a number of sci fi stories in subsequent years, so are worth a watch (I recall that Stalker plodded a bit)

Meteor (big star cast, previous version of Deep Impact and the like); I really liked The Black Hole (lots of dark moments) and this is the Star Trek movie (not seen the new ones) I like most.

I much Preferred Mad Max 2 and Time after Time is HG Wells v Jack the Ripper (yawn)
