  1. That was me I can't say I'm disappointed or anything, it's still way too early to call so I'll wait for more info. I'm just a bit worried by the "streamlining" talk and the removal or "micromanagement". I still feel that this new XCOM will not (I swear, no pun was intended- well maybe a little ) cover all the bases for an old-school Xcom fan.
  2. Yeah you're right Chris, sorry about that. In closing then, it's not my intention to badmouth anyone. In fact I'm cautiously optimistic about the new xcom but I will have my reservations until I see gameplay. Some people obviously have a lot of faith in Firaxis, I can respect that so I suggest we leave it at that.
  3. Sorry, but no. This is the same line of thinking that defenders of the xcom FPS used when the first cinematic trailer came out. "You don't know anything about the game", "wait for more info" and such. I do not subscribe to the idea that I have no right to voice my concern before the actual fact. I'd rather let the people in charge know what I want beforehand. In fewer words, I hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
  4. I can see how someone would maybe think that, but it really isn't the case. Having some questions and doubts about the Firaxis Xcom is only natural because a) we know almost nothing about it, b) we've been burned before with mainstream attempts at reviving iconic franchises, c) the publisher's president went on record to say that "strategy games just aren't contemporary", d) it's a multiplatform game so there may be some amount of simplification in order to appeal to the mainstream. I'm not wishing for it to be bad or anything, I would absolutely love it if both Xcom and Xenonauts turned out to be great, fun games. I'm just cautious and skeptical until we learn more about it. I was equally skeptical about Xenonauts at first because so many similar projects failed to capture the feeling of the original games, but now that I've played the alpha I know that it's shaping up beautifully. That's all. No hostility, no fanboyism, just the fact that we know much about one game and next to nothing about the other.
  5. Just remember though, if that is indeed the case and there's only one base, you heard it from me first! Anyway, I've been promoting the game on every forum that I'm a member at. I wrote a post on Rock Paper Shotgun as well as on the greek pc gaming forum where I frequently post. Not because Goldhawk is an indie company or Chris is a nice guy (which he is), but because I've played a bit with the beta and I'm absolutely certain that Xenonauts will be one hell of a game.
  6. Well I truly hope that you are right and I am wrong, I would love to have two (or maybe three with UFO Extraterrestrials 2) excellent games to play. Fingers crossed!
  7. Ok I understand the point that the topic creator is trying to make but noone is actually trying to belittle Firaxis's game on purpose. I'm pretty sure it will be a great game but I'm also fairly confident that it will be missing several elements from the previous games. I don't have any proof of that but I do have the example of Civilization: Revolution. I've heard that it's actually a great and fun game, but it's really only a shadow of the "proper" Civ. Saying that the game will have to be simplified for consoles is a pretty safe assumption, so unless they're creating two different versions there's no way to provide the depth of the previous games while keeping everything nice and simple for a mainstream audience. You can already get a hint of that from the official announcement. At one point it says "Players will control the fate of the human race through researching alien technologies, creating and managing a fully operational base, planning combat missions and controlling soldier movement in battle." Take note that it says "creating and managing A fully operational base", as in you only get one base and no ability to build a new one.
  8. Obviously this new Xcom will make things a bit more difficult for Xenonauts because people were rallying behind the game as the only true successor to the original. However, I see this as only a minor inconvenience, because I've played Xenonauts and I know first-hand that it's of a very high quality. The 'official' Xcom will surely have to sacrifice some of the depth in order to appeal to a more mainstream audience, while Xenonauts is the true Xcom experience. I think the main thing to avoid is releasing Xenonauts at the same time as XCOM:EU. If Xenonauts is released before EU then it's all fine and dandy, otherwise it would be best to release at least after a month or so. Release on Steam with a minor discount, take part in the next big sale and all should be fine.
  9. Man I'm so torn about this! I desperately want to try the game, but I really don't want to spoil my fun for the final version, I want it all to be new and exciting How are you guys handling it?
  10. Ahh, it's good to be back The site and forums look nice Chris, I hope the game is moving along nicely. Of course I went with the premium preorder, I support you guys 100%. Regarding the possible bonuses for the premium pre-orderers, I'd like to make a suggestion. My guess is that the game will have an (infinite?) pool of soldiers for hire with random names, right? Well I thought it would be cool if you guys could add the premium pre-orderers' real names (if they so wish, of course) into that pool. I would love it if I had a physical presense in the game and I'm sure other pre-orderers would love it too. I don't know if it's possible of course, just a suggestion
