1. How would one mod the game, by the way?

Until they get the mod folders working, usually it's just a case of pasting the modded files into the assets folder. Some mods will go into other folders within assets, check with the mod description first.

Would the mods work on the Mac client?

I don't see why not, most mods are just modded xml files and/or .png art assets. You might have problems with mod programs like Quartermaster's Armory though..

  2. Are you saying that you see only a static image? that would mean that you have no suitable codec to run the video.. Have you removed windows media player from your system?

No, I'm operating on 3-4 hours sleep a night so my tired ol' eyes didn't notice the movement of the movie in the launcher until I loaded up the video in VLC. The launcher is working fine.

  3. Even though it was a pretty shitty thing to do to release SOTS2 in the state it was in, you've got to give Kerberos kudos for sticking with it and getting the game into a playable state. Not many devs do that these days.I picked the game up in a steam sale for about $5 and have just been waiting for it to mature, looks like it won't be too far away. What I've seen so far looks awesome.

  4. Since names and call signs are getting confusing, here's what I'd quite like.

Click on Soldier Name "Chris England" - changes the name, so you can call people your friends etc.

Click on Soldier Callsign "Le Grand Fromage" - changes what the person's nickname is.

Click on Portrait - Select a portrait of your choice for this soldier from the pool.

Click on Giant "R" - Changes squad role.

Click on Flag - Allows you to select a flag form a Flag folder. Default image here could be a Xenonaut Logo or UN.

Click on Rank - Could allow you to select your own rank image from a Rank folder? Just a thought.

Assignment & Role pull down added just to see what they'd look like there.

In game, could there be a menu option - Soldier Name/Call Sign. This would determine what the soldier would be known as elsewhere in the game - such as on the Battlescape and the personnel screens. For example Cpl Chris England or Le Grand Fromage (without the rank being mentioned at all with the callsign?)

Caveats - the kick starter pre-order soldiers may have to be set in such a way that their details can't be altered. Alternatively, they may simply appear as defaults, that you can order. It depends what the Kickstarter text states, and if anyone feels ripped off by that.

I like this. I mentioned in the Xtended backgrounds thread that I never change my soldier's names as they have histories now but if you could change those too then that would be pretty cool.

  5. Thanks Guys! More praise is always good for the soul and the size of my head! :D

I always found it kind of weird, but personalization like this always made the troops much more likable.

It's funny, In X-Com I nearly always renamed my soldiers because they were just names but in Xenonauts, since they have backgrounds, I don't touch them at all. Which is the main reason I did this mod as I love how the game gives the troops some history and I wanted to give it more variety.

And how to implement random generator of biography? Like as date and palce of birth, and some another information.

Unfortunately, the only biographical details a soldier has is name, age, nationality, regiment, and combat experience. It would be cool to have more but it would be pretty far down the list of programming priorities.

  6. Thanks Bangelnot, I've managed to get a good selection of Soviet units and combat experience but thanks for confirming some of them.

A new version for 16.1 is up, I've changed the way the Vietnamese names are arranged in the xml to reflect their proper usage. It doesn't look any different on screen but the middle names are now attached to the family names( which in vietnamese is actually their first name).

  7. every single build i wait for this thread to update. i LOVE the flavour of checking out my initial guys backgrounds and then trying to squad them up...

'so an Englishman a Frenchman and a German walk into an alien ship and find an alien.

the Frenchman forgot to reload so he runs away.

the Englishman misses with his shotgun

and the German shoots the alien through the Englishman with a G3a3 and it dies.

Englishman survives with a fist-size exit wound in his belly (that doesn't bleed surprisingly)

Thanks for your comment :) Flavour is what it's all about. :)

  8. With V14 coming out tomorrow, I've decided to wait until then. I've tested the new female soldiers file with 13.2 and it's all good so it shouldn't take too long to update it to V14.

Hey can you add Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Angola. I don't know much about the Angolan (MPLA/UNITA) but for the Rhodesian I know they were engaged in the Bush Wars for prior conflicts and Rhodesia still exists (albeit as Zimbabwe Rhodesia) by the time of the game. The divisions I know for these countries are

    Rhodesia

1st Battalion Rhodesian Light Infantry (1RLI)

    Rhodesian Special Air Services (SAS)

    Rhodesian African Rifles

    Grey's Scout

    South Africa

    44 Parachute Brigade

    32 Battalion

    Koevoet

    Conflicts

Angolan Bush War (South African Border War)

    Angolan Civil War

For names I think you can just reused the British names for the Rhodesians and for the South Africans mix the British and the Dutch names together since Afrikaans and Dutch are practically the same language.

I got asked to add Rhodesia and South Africa earlier in the thread, and my answer then was :

My line of thinking is that Xenonauts is mainly a Nato / Warsaw Pact organisation with Aus / NZ being strong allies of Nato so I added them. (Actually with this train of thought, maybe I could add Vietnamese and Cubans as they were strong allies of the Soviets) I thought about adding Rhodesia and South Africa but Rhodesia was an unrecognised state that had been turned into Zimbabwe by 1979 and South Africa was a pariah state by then due to it's apartheid policies so I'm not sure how they'd fit in.

I may go and some more nations at some point, the Koreas come to mind, but at the moment I'm happy with what is there.

    Swe_Raccoon, none taken!:D and thanks.

  9. Well, it's been a while but I've finally managed to get around to updating the mod, I've now included female names for all the countries I've added so far.Once I've downloaded v13, I'll release the update.

Oh, and thanks for the offers of help fellas, I'd just finished compiling the update then saw your offers, I'll see about adding more nationalities next time.

  10. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan kicked off Dec 1979 so with the game starting before that no one would have Afghanistan as combat experience.

Yeah, I thought that too originally but after some research , I made the Afghan experience in my mod represent the soldiers being advisors to the afghan army in the civil war leading up to the invasion.
