  1. hmmm... yes i do remember reading it but don't see it int he list I will edit it and add it. i guess my train of thought was towards the Marksmanship Medal, and since you didn't highlight all your names it made it harder for me to see but i will add them
  2. I have taken the liberty of compiling almost every single medal name given into a list. My goal is to try to get all of us into a common ground and the improve from there. First we have established that the leveling of the medal based on a star/pin system on top of the ribbon is placed once a second or subsequent award is received. Each medal can have its own specific threshold for receiving said subsequent awards. As such this will be a template 1st award = Medal/Ribbon 2dn Award = 1st silver star/pin on ribbon 3rd Award = 2nd silver 4th Award = 3rd silver 5th Award = 1st gold start/pin on ribbon 6th Award = 2nd gold 7th Award = 3rd gold 8th Award = 1st Platinum star/pin on ribbon 9th Award = 2nd Plat 10th or final Award = 3rd Plat. So this will be a globalized leveling of ribbons as i believe almost everyone agreed it’s a fair system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Now the actual Medal/Ribbon Fighters/Aircrafts: Flying Ace Medal Destroy certain number of UFOs Flying Savior Medal Destroy three UFO's in the air (Not crash landing) in a single combat ( or maybe multiple) Dropships: Xenonauts Campaign Medal Carry out certain number of UFO ground assault missions. Troopers: Purple Heart Medal This medal could be given for heroism there is a lot of ideas and the name could be change I am also a little iffy about it, after all i think every single unit is going go received it which is not bad, it just shows the game is brutal Medal of Honor /Medal of Heroism Kill 5 aliens in a single mission Xenonauts Service Medal Survive for X months Service Ribbon Medal Given to soldier for a specific number of missions they perform or have been a part of Star of Gallantry Medal Capture a certain number of aliens Gallantry Medal Capture certain number of live aliens, in any manner such as stun weapons, stun baton or simply knocking them out with an explosion, a melee attack or your bare fist!!! Bolt's Cross Medal Stun a certain number of aliens with a stun baton (commander/leader) Specialists Medal Stun a certain number of aliens with one stun grenade/rocket Crimson Heart Medal Survive a mission with a certain percentage of life or less health (could at 25% but alien weapons are likely to bring you down that far most of the time anyways; still, 25% might be better if we want it a bit more exclusive) Survivor Medal Survives the mission after falling unconscious from fatal wounds, this could be a one-time award or repetitive. Survivor's Medal Sole Survivor in any mission One is the loneliest number Medal Only survivor in a mission Merit Star Medal Kill a certain number of Aliens Order of Earth Medal Clear a UFO of medium size (large, maybe? this needs to be really hard) or larger by yourself Victorian Cross Medal Killed all the aliens in a UFO by yourself Grenadiers Medal Kill 2 or more aliens with one grenade Grenadier Medal Reaches a certain amount of kills with grenades Marksman's Medal Kill an alien at over 50 feet with a weapon (this can then apply for all other weapons) Bulls-eye /Marksmanship/Sniper Proficiency Medal Reaches a certain number of kills with sniper weapon [this could be applied to any weapon type such as pistols, rifle, heavy weapons bazookas, etc...] Victory Medal Kill an alien in close combat (you know instead of Victory we can say "Nike" as she is the goddess of victory) Legionnaire's Ribbon Medal Have your combat shield break after absorbing the full amount of shots Distinguished Service Award Medal Reach top rank (although i don't think is necessary since you are already getting the top rank it feels like double dipping ) Sedgwick's Cross Medal Killed the enemy commander before any of his men (named after General John Sedgwick, who's last words are reported to be: "They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist...") (I do not know how this will work out) Star of St. John Medal Survived a fatal wound (i think this one flirts with danger since it brings religion into the game, so every religion may need to have one to be politically correct) Heart of Terra Medal Given it to someone wounded severely who also managed to perform well in a mission. Star of Sol Medal Given for extraordinary heroism while in combat. (Not panicking even once, after 3-4 squad deaths, each with higher or equal rank) Eagled Eyes Medal Sighting the first of a new Alien species Luckiest Medal Survives a battle after being shot (at) more than a predetermine number of times by enemy units. Man of Steel Medal Survives a battle after being hit 5 times by enemy units Medal of Heroism Kill 7 Aliens in one mission (5 seems like too small of a number, this needs to be a really extraordinary one to recognize those times when a single operative comes through in the clutch) Star of Courage Medal Be the first trooper into X amount (where X is a large amount) of UFOs and alien bases Star/Medal of Sacrifice Take a bullet/explosion meant for a teammate (little iffy on this one, but just tossing out ideas, and i do not know how this will be achieved) Protector Medal Take a shot to save a civilian or other soldier. North America, Central America, South America, Europe, North Africa, South Africa, IndoAsia, Australia Campaign Ribbon Medal Serve X months in the specific area to receive that area campaign ribbon Melee Aficionado Medal Close quarters combat or hand-to-hand or stun-baton-to-hand if you get what i mean, you must be a bad ass if you get close enough to try and capture or kill an alien like that Defender Medal Being part of a successful base defense Tanker Medal Kill all the Aliens with a single tank Chuck Norris Medal Kill all the aliens with a single regular soldier Dying Kill Medal Kill an Alien with a grenade the turn after you've died. (Aliens turn)(I do not think that the game keeps track of medals for units that were killed so I think this one is extra) Hell-raiser Medal Use incendiary weapons on a certain number of enemies or kill a certain number of enemies with incendiary weapons. Demolition-Man Medal Blow up a whole UFO ( i know i don't think is possible but you get what i mean) Ace in the Hole Medal Killed enemy with last round in his inventory Senile Medal Killed enemy with projectile weapon while enemy is in Fog Of War (i know what senile means ) Acceptable Service Medal Survive first mission. Black (out) Cross Medal (added the "out" to more clearly define darkness) Survived a certain number of night mission Rhythm of the Night Survived a certain number of night mission Terran Cross Medal can be given for achieving mission objectives as the highest rank left standing after your squad has taken fatalities (only if you weren't the highest rank at the start) Citation Ribbon Medal These could be for leading (highest rank in the mission) the team that recovers a specific piece of alien tech [Alien type] Medal This could be applied for capturing a specific type of alien (based on the rank you will get the level of the medal, so lower level ribbon, medic or technician , silver star and so on, as Gauddlike noted for all alien like the Andron, etc...) Order of Glory Medal No Description given Military Cross Medal No Description given Honorarium Crux Medal No Description given Long Service Medal Medal No Description given No name given Completed a terror mission without a single civilian casualty No name given Survived friendly fire No name given Capture a leader/navigator I have tried to arrange the medal/ribbon according to their award reason; people have provided different names for the same type of goals. So this will be a way to try and create a cohesive list of everything. I think we should stop coming out with new reason and try to polish these ones and of course if we find other things we have overlooked then just add it accordingly. We can try and argue this in an orderly manner so we can present a united front to Chris. You know the idea "United we stand, divided we fall" i think this way it will be easier for the coders to implement it instead of trying to toy with a bunch of ideas. Also i have tried to make the reasons more generic. DISCLAIMER: I didn't think all this up this is a compilation of a lot of people ideas. And i do agree that some Medals should only be awarded once, but remember you can make the requirements very difficult so even if theoretically it may have multiple awards you may only get it once. An example in real word you can get the Medal of Honor more than one once but how many people have received it more than once?? Just my $0.02
  3. So going back to a previous post and something like AD i highlighted those and of course there can be very different a difficult scenarios which will award such a ribbon. and you can fun with them one is the loneliest number = only survivor in a mission Hell-raiser = use incendiary weapons on 10 enemies or kill 10 Demolition-man = blow up a whole UFO ( i know i don't think is possible but you get what i mean) Ace in the hole = killed enemy with last round in his inventory Senile = killed enemy with projectile weapon while enemy is in Fog Of War (i know what senile means ) etc... etc...
  4. i think you guys need to relax a little bit, first i can see the main argument between TT and AD, you guys are arguing two different schools of thought. First TT wants a pseudo-military type award system having all types of recognition for all the hard work you do, which i can understand having served and all, it feels good to receive recognition even if you weren't expecting it, and i truly love it. Second AD wants the gamers perspective having an award system that will remind him all the incredible awesome and lucky things his little soldiers have endure. and i can also understand that begin an avid X-COM fan and having those little guys survive against unmeasurable odds. Those are good memories. So why don't' we reach a middle ground? there will be the medals that are standard for all unit as long as they reach those prerequisites and the there will be those medals that will make you say "Yeah... i got this one when i went in with a single grenade and my 9mm took the guy on my right with a single shot, right between the eyes, then saw 2 shadows approaching around a bend lobed my bouncing Betty and before the gray on my left had time to react i had slit his throat with my trusty K-BAR as i heard my little baby go boom in the back ground... ahhh that was a good day" So you see guys both of you want the same thing in just different views, why not have them both it seems TT is really creative in the pseudo-real naming of those ribbon/medals, and AD is also really creative in the special type of awards area. So why not let Chris decide, or try to convince him that both of them are awesome and every unit will be similar but at the same time they all will have their individuality. anyway just my $0.02
  5. that is very good and i think it really makes the medals sound official which is definitely great. the only things i will change in this will be: -Kill 5 Aliens - Merit Star The ribbon gets bronze stars on it for every 5 (10?)subsequent kills up to 20, -Kill 20 Aliens-Merit Star (gets a silver star on the ribbon for every 20 kills, so you would have a star for 20, 40, and 60 subsequent kills) don't make the sub-sequent silver stars easier to get. i will remove the Distinguished since it will be implied that the silver start represent Distinguished -Kill 60 Aliens-Merit Star (gets a gold star for every 60 kills, so 60, 120, 180) -Kill 180 Aliens-Merit Star (gets a platinum star for every 100 subsequent kills) I know it sounds absurd but i remember some of my vets in XCOM had like 250 kills, and if the game is really what it sounds like, then 200 kills is just another day at the job . and the Gallantry medal as said by TT will follow same rules, although we can do a factor since we don't want so many live aliens (they cost a lot to feed!!!!) also you could add specific ribbons for specific weapons or specific type of weapons, Pistol/rifle = Marksmanship Medal Grenades = Grenadier Medal You can apply the same increments as previous we need to remember also for the art dept this will simplify things the only thing you change is the color of the ribbon and maintain a single set of artwork. Also AD did get a few things that would be nice such as special or incredible feats close quarters combat or hand-to-hand or stun-baton-to-hand if you get what i mean, you must be a bad ass if you get close enough to try and capture or kill an alien like that, Melee Medal Also i think the Service Ribbon/medal could be given to soldier for the missions they perform such like 10 and then proceed with the same medal leveling scheme. And the Campaign Ribbon/Medal based on locality i think that is nice, given after you serve in a region for a specific time, so in actuality you can have soldiers with different sets. Europe, Asia, North/South America, Africa, Australia and any other region in the game. Also as i mentioned before all these ribbons/medals are really specific to you performing actions in the game. How about things that are out of your control. Defender Medal = being part of a successful base defense or being lucky enough to survive a few shots from your enemy, (i assume the damage is a RNG) so if you survive lets say 5 shots that is a feat on itself I know i am all over the place, that is just how my brain works
  6. i can see the medal as being maybe a one time morale boost or attribute boost but it must be minimal so that way it doesn't become a collecting of medals, most medal could be given for performing exceptional tasks while other for more mundane or routine task. As i mentioned before it can be based on awards your first award is you ribbon/medal and subsequent awards are markers or pin on the ribbon. Also i see people not wanting mundane medals for every action you perform that is why they should be provided when a certain level of proficiency is reached for example Grenadier, reaches 20 kills with grenades Bulls-eye, reaches 20 kill with sniper weapon Survivor, survives the mission after falling unconscious from fatal wounds, this could be a one time award or repetitive. Luckiest, survives a battle after being shot (at) more than 20 time by enemy units. Man of Steel, survives a battle after being hit 5 times by enemy units I hope you see where i am going, some medals/ribbon should be given based on the units abilities but some are based on circumstances out of the control of the player. I think a lot of people have great ideas but need to focus on what is more important in their perspective. For me gaining attributes or skill points for getting a ribbon is non-detrimental, after all you are getting experience points for performing all tasks that is truly like the cherry on top of the cake of course these are just my $0.02
  7. thanks Gorlom, well yes the whole idea is to receive the bonuses once, but of course it can't be tha simple, for example like it was mention the purple heart, it is very likely that just about every single soldier will get it but it can be done such that. your first award is you first wounded, regardless of your health then < 50% bronze < 25% silver < 10% gold or follow the same logic as before, of course i think not all medals need to be rewarded with bonuses, how about penalties? a soldier you take in combat and doesn't fire a single shot? or panics too much there can be a several approaches to the medal system but if it provides some balance then it definitely improves the quality of play.
  8. Hello all, Well i am not against the portrait as long as it provides some information, for example if ti show how many aliens the units see, or if its wounded or not or its health, or if it has a critical wound, i did a little mock up long ago for a mod, it was done for UFO: ET http://ufo-scene.com/files/public/1264603821_476_FT10191_main-gui.jpg i did other version but my site went down long ago and never repaired it. in any case as long as the portraits provide functionality the they are good. Disclaimer: I am not an artist or pretend to be one i am just a fan with sometime in my hands "sometimes"
  9. I remember it, it was space Marines, and i think the Chigs had a better saying, "Abandon all hope" Or maybe you can say "Do you want to live forever?"
  10. Hello all, long time follower finally decided to join. About the medals, for consecutive medals such as 5 kills 10 Kills etc... would it be better if instead of making them separate you simply add a marker like they you in the military 5 Kills = first award = Ribbon 10 Kills = second award = bronze star on ribbon 20 kills = 3rd award = 2nd bronze start on ribbon it coudl be made that every 20 kills you get a bronze start up to 3 in a ribbon once that is reach the next award will be a silver start so at 80 Kills = silver start then like at 250 kills = a gold start and you could get like 3 gold stars something to that effect after all you want ribbon but also want to keep a control for example maybe 20 ribbons or medals each of those can have several awards, as we know almost all every award can be achieved at least once. the of course as people have mentioned have really special ribbons for something that is not usual.
