Sorry I have saved over since then If its any help, when I reloaded the game and killed the fighter before the corvette, the game continued normally after the combat. It was only when I left a single fighter alive and undamaged I had the problem

I engaged a corvette with 2 fighter escorts. In the first battle I damaged the corvette and destroyed one of the fighters. I landed, re-armed and came back. The second time I destroyed the corvette and then headed for home without destroying the second. As soon as my fighter reaches safety, the game crashes to desktop. I've repeated this three times with the save game after the first combat. I've tried leaving in different direction but the same result.
