  1. The thing that makes Mind Control so much more powerful than in the original is that the MCed soldier gets to act immediately.

I second this, MC is a real pain when three of my 12 open fire on the others even though they've moved and fired during their turn and have no action points left. I could tolerate it a bit more if the MC'd soldier used any remaining action points during the aliens turn, I'd imagine they've succumbed to the whispers in their mind telling them the captain ate their last biscuit and must die NOW. Stowing weapons every other turn to avoid any friendly fire seems gamey

Also dread makes the final mission even harder, elite troops are reduced to a crawl and cannot deal with the aliens.

  2. In my last alien base assault I landed in a medium Andron base and the terminators just kept coming, my commander was killed but morale held and three guys blew the alien base reactor, they ran back to the base entrance - all shouting 'GET TO DA CHOPPAAA' with Michael Bay style explosions following them.

Any link I can make to a cheesy film moment is good for me.

  3. Hi,

In September the blue shirted guys with sunglasses show up with shiny new plasma rifles and make my life hell. It seems they can one shot your basic armoured guys from across the map, I had one shoot from behind a wall, through a window and then through an open door to kill one of my guys. Their RNG modification device allows them to bypass cover most of the time.

I've already reduced the accuracy of plamsa rifles (their reaction fire was ridiculous) but is there a way to reduce the guards shooting skill too?

  4. I love the aliens assaulting my base, the opportunity to redecorate the walls with purple goo is always welcome.

Apart from the main base when I start a new one I'm trying to work out which structure is the best to join onto the command centre. I tend to have the rest of the base branch out from this one room, unless the aliens have their assault tunnels joining onto the command centre then they have to come through this one room. So far I've been using the hangar for this, but which room would you use?

Sadly they've only ever attacked my main base - which is a mess of rooms.

  5. I generally go two Fox, two Condor per base for the early months. Although I'm really considering just going pure Fox again for my next playthrough (keeping my initial two Condors).

I'd be interested in knowing how you'd deal with enemy air superiority flights (3xheavy fighter) with mostly Foxtrots. Would you just launch a bait Condor and fly away on the map, then burn away on the air combat minigame?

  6. Aha the events have already been balanced then!

I think the Cruisers came much sooner than 5months (on Veteran) but I've started a new game on Normal so the save is gone.

Before restarting I had two bases with 15 scientists in each and was at Jackal/Laser & scatter laser on the ground with Alenium misiles (I had an Alien Reactor to research which unlocks the next tier of missiles.. or does it?) and I had researched Corsairs but only had one on the assembly line due to funding.

My mistake was to only build a single Foxtrot, in this game I'll try bases with 3xCondors and 2xFoxtrots.

Do Alien bases also affect the funding or just relations?

  7. Also, I agree with jonny, ammo carried in the gatling guns could be increased :)

I've changed the ammo level through the xml file in the assets folder. I think it was aircraftweapons.xml and the files are pretty self-explanatory. However in my quick browse I couldn't find anything related to the UFO generated events. In a new Normal difficulty game I saw 'tidal disruption' costs $10k and an 'abduction' costs $15k. In this new game the US zones get hammered to start with and it'll be 18 days until a base with 2xhangars is built and fitted out with Condors.

  8. I've reached a ragequit point with my current Veteran game, it's not the ground missions but the air war and funding that's killing me. Today the first cruisers arrived and I'm being punished for not building enough Foxtrots or having working Corsairs. A cruiser can outrun Condors but I think 3xV20 stable Alenium Missile/Gatling Laser Condors can maybe bring one down although it takes many game loads to get an intercept. If possible I'd like to mod:-

    The cruisers speed.

Give planes guns more than 50 ammo - perhaps up to 75.

What is most annoying is the huge funding penalty caused by aliens flying over countries, I don't see many 'events' appearing but the funding seems to take a big hit when an alien ship appears. I'd like to lessen this penalty.

  9. Team America destroying Paris is a viable tactic in a game when you don't have to worry about the destruction counting towards your nation relations.

Hahaha I forgot all about Team Americas style until then but a very valid comparison. Is the mastermind behind the alien invasion weally Kim Jong Il? Can Hans Bwix save us with an angry letter? Tune in next week for another exciting episode of Xenonauts.

  10. You'd need a huge library of audio to stop it from getting repetitive or maybe end up with an Arma type of system where lines are stuck together but that can sound rubbish at times. Mind you I watched Battle Los Angeles last night and throughout I wished those guys would just shut up and hide instead of yelling in the street, so perhaps no talking would be preferable to Duke Nukem cheese or Stephen Hawking drone (and cheaper at the end of the day).

  11. It would be nice if there was an 'overwatch' feature for reaction fire where a square or small area could be designated, I find my unmoved scatter laser guy doesn't react to Sebilians coming down a base corridor and gunning down his teammates. Perhaps that would be slightly overpowered unless the enemy could also use smoke... I'm sure that would be an AI programmers nightmare though :)

  12. Hiya,

I've only recently discovered that a standing soldier always fires over the top of a crouching soldier if he is in the square directly behind, so if you need to line them up try this. Also yesterday after playing for a few months I found that when aiming right clicking changes between 'snapshot, normal and aimed'. I wish I'd found this out earlier in the campaign.

  13. I reloaded and assaulted it again and the base had turned into a Ceasean one, a little bit easier to crack but I still lost 3 guys. The last room with the commander was painful. Next time I'm going to double up on smokes and flashbangs and have a couple of rookies soften up the first room with rpgs before moving in. I had a mix of laser/ballistic guys mostly in Jackal armour.

Interesting vid Tascruel, thanks for taking the time to upload it. So, if you have a guy kneeling and the guy directly behind fires it will *always* miss the kneeling soldier? Just like in Zulu?
