  1. Besides, really, how often did you use more than 1 or 2 grenades total per mission in the old one?
I did this many times. I played a few times that for fun I used only grenades on the harder difficulties after I patched the game. Without the patch the difficulties did not matter. I did this with grenades only for fun but it worked and there was freedome in the game to allow this. This is a good example of how that give the players more freedom is more fun. This is not true about the new game. There is no options except to use one grenade or wear a shirt etc. I became bored with no options.
  2. The term "dumbed down" really just gets to me.
I do not understand this. I look things up many times because my english is not as best. This term meaning 'The act of taking a product and watering down elements of it to make it appeal to a broader mass market. This often damages or destroys the very elements that gave the product any appeal in the first place.' is what that happened to the new xcom. Maybe I am not realizing the meaning that you think. This one I quote above is the one that I mean when I say about the new xcom.
  3. Just that it requires more strategy to beat.
This new game does not require much strategy. This is not comparing to the first game. I am meaning all by itself. The strategy parts does not require for much input from the players. I have the feeling of the game holding my hand through the strategy parts. It allows me to make some very limited decisions on the tactics things but that is not the strategy parts. The new game requires strategy of follow directions the workers say to do and you win. That's how it happened to me anyway. There were no options that are meaningful to do except to let me be led around doing what I am told. :(
  4. Because you need to think a lot more to beat the game.

Just because a game has lots of freedom doesn't mean you actually have to use your brain to beat it. Usually it's the opposite because when designers use the "kitchen sink" philosophy, good design, difficulty crafting and balance go out the window. Look at TES games, or like any post-BG2 Bioware game. SOOOO much freedom, SOOOO brainless.

I think I know the reasoning now from this. I think you do not play a game for the game itself. It seems you play a game for the beating of it. I am not like this and rather to play a game for the fun of the game and for being creative and doing many things. I do not even really care if I can beat it. I am still playing fallout new vegas even today and have never beaten it and it is fun to me anyway. I think this is why we do not agree on the new xcom.

edit - Now that I think back I do not remember beating the first xcom game as well. Yet it was fun to me.

  5. Why would I need to defend it when the overwhelming consensus is that it's an awesome game?

I wasn't being sarcastic either. It's really true, although you can minimize your casualties on UD, you can still beat it simply by sending sacrificial lambs out to soak reaction shots while your vets mop up.

That's cool. I just get annoyed when people equate less freedom to dumbing down. It gets really annoying considering the first one takes a lot less thinking to beat.

This is exactly the point in question. it was possible to make a play style as such because there was freedom to do so. In the new game there is no freedom to do things as this. Dumb down is exactly what hapened. as if fraxis is afraid a player can do some things he wishes and instead gives very limited options. This is almost 'dumbed down' by definition. I do not undertand how you think this is not.

  6. Soldiers don't stop when they see the enemey. They cannot fire on the enemy and then run. they cannot use actions for things like to heal with the medkits then do other things. Soldier is locked to some things like weapons and ability if he is a certain class. Soldier classes are random assined to the soldiers. They cannot shoot the things in the world but by missing the enemy. The equipmrnt for them is making no logical reasoning for things like shirt or scope or grenade. I do not understand. All these things are not for more options. They are less.

  7. So how exactly does XCOM limit you guys from playing the game the way you want to? Please elaborate.

I don't get it, you guys want your strategy games to be sandbox games? That's cool I guess, but I'm willing to guess a lot of people are going to disagree with you if you want XCOM to be more like Skyrim, you know, the game where the best strategy is to literally just run at your opponent and swing your weapon like a 3 year old with a temper tantrum, you're going to have a hard time selling that to X-Com fans. Or maybe you just want your Interceptors to fly backwards when they patch the game, or have seizure mutons.

Like I said before, if that's the game you want to play, feel free to make it, and then tell me how it goes over.

I think you are asking about the fraxis game? Sorry for my english is not as good. I might be incorrect.

The fraxis game does not give me a good feeling of freedom to do things. there are some places like soldiers with litle control of them and their equipment. This is very bad for the players.

If I didn not understand I am sorry.

  8. Or how about i shoot and move out of the way. With TU i could reload and move to a different spot. Reload and shoot. Pick up a grenade off a dead guy or a med kit and use it. Pick up a more siutable for the situation gun off of a dead guy. I could do lot's of things assuming i have the TU to do it. And game developers give you enough TU(the good ones anyway) to do multiple things. With TU soldiers are much more tactically flexible. It wasn't simplified it was dumbed down. Sure it got faster but then again we are not talking about an FPS but a TBS. A genre the point of which is planning not running and guning.

    Edit;

Oh and you know what else? when spotting an alien a soldier can stop and save the remeining TU for some other order. Instead of continuing to run in between two mutons like a jackass.

    Just say'n.

Yes. I was as well very dissapointed with these things. they could have made the new game much better but made it dumbed down. I don't like that.
  9. Professor Michio Kaku once stated that any extraterrestrial civilization that are capable of interstellar travel is at least thousands of years ahead of us in terms of technology. How on earth do we present a military challenge to such an advanced civilization back in 1979 is beyond me...

Everything else is fine tho, keep up the good work.

I like the time they set it in. gives it a retro feel. too many games now are all future based and gets boring.
