  1. Since you guys are into bug fixing before the final release, I thought I might submit a few minor things that perhaps you would like to change for accuracy before you hit 1.0. For the Australian military in the 1970's there was 1 Commando Company and 2 Commando Company, would you consider adding them to the Australian regiment list and perhaps removing the generic Royal Australian Regiment? And a minor correction for the New Zealand military, in 1978 the 1st Ranger Squadron as it is called in game was renamed to the 1st New Zealand Special Air Service Squadron.

Should some clarification be required as well 1 Commando and 2 Commando were the exact names of those Australian units, there was no st or nd after the numbers.

  2. But that's what I meant: shouldn't it be enough to be able to customize the identity of an soldier once; when he/she is recruited? What would you leave out of being customizable on the soldiers? Gender? Shouldn't it be changeable whenever the player wants also then? And what would we have then: a genderbenderUFOdefenderforce? ;)

Nicknames/Callsigns are completely different matter and I agree that they should be freely customizable.

I suggested a hire custom soldier button to go alongside the normal hire button in a previous post. It's a decent idea, but there are definitely more simple ways for Chris to implement aesthetic soldier customisation.

  3. The callsign IS the name for all intents and purposes, as I said less than a page before. The actual soldier name is used nowhere in the game except in one small fluff text string on one screen.

If we make both editable people are going to be complaining that they have to edit every soldier name twice, because if they just change the "name" then the soldier's callsign will still be his old name and that would look ridiculous. I'm genuinely surprised people find one tiny line of text so ridiculously immersion breaking that we're being asked to take it out of the game. I'm also going to have to think about whether I want users to be able to completely overwrite their soldier backgrounds given they can already rename their soldiers to whatever they please.

Also, TrashMan, your last post makes no sense. Renaming your soldiers won't change whether they look like your friends.

Chris, the more control you give players over the RPG aspects of their characters the better. Player defined names and backgrounds, while they might not seem like a big deal to you, for players out there who love these kinds of games it's an awesome feature to have. The first thing I would do if I could edit soldier names and background is name a soldier after my dad with the former unit being the army battalion he served in for years. Some may call it silly, but it's stuff like that which really separates a game from the rank and file.

  4. By the way, if anyone thinks military guns are "too cheap to meter", here's a few to take a look at:

    Submachinegun

    Sniper rifle

    Anti-materiel rifle

    Semi-auto precision rifle

    Long-range rifle

The dealer is legit, prices are pretty much about what the military pays, not inflated.

Note the "M" bits. M110 is actually being actively procured by USMC, not just as a special ops toy.

These aren't the cheapest guns, no, but it's not like Xenonauts would only want the cheapest.

Apparently that Anti-Materiel rifle would have cost $4,541.34 in 1979.

  5. Being able to edit it - say, by holding the mouse button for a couple seconds, much like accepted in modern GUI - seems quite simple in terms of both implementation and minimal clutter to the UI. And immersion, you aren't reminded that you can edit it.

Seconded, click to edit is a good no mess no fuss way to edit names. Imagine if Xenonauts released without changeable names and all the live streamers out there couldn't name soldiers after their viewers. The horror!

  6. The term "Callsign" is just put in the game because I didn't think it was particularly realistic to add an option to literally change the name of your soldiers. Seemed a bit immersion-breaking to me. To all purposes and effects, it should rename the soldier everywhere in the game except for the tiny writing above his stats on the Soldier Equip screen. If the Callsign doesn't overwrite the name somewhere, then it's a bug and should be reported as such.

There's no functionality for adding a nickname to your soldier, like James "Bond" Smith. We simply don't have the UI space to be dealing with that as well as the soldier name. Just call your soldier what you want him to be called using the Callsign function and problem solved.

As for changing the soldier portrait and genders etc - I'm not convinced it's a good idea. Really, you're meant to make do with what the game gives you; which is why it was a special Kickstarter tier to be able to have a soldier just like you appear in the game at will. I don't think we're going to change that. I'm not being difficult for financial reasons (though they'd also stop me saying yes), I've always thought that and that's why we charged a lot to let people break the immersion a little and get themselves in the game via Kickstarter.

I guess you can use the Force Soldier option to find people that look a bit like the people you want in your LP and you can make the game spawn them in the starting squad, though.

People get to be recognised for their contribution in EVERY single Xenonauts game that everybody is going to play. Allowing individual players to rename random soldiers in their own game isn't backing out of the promises made on kickstarter. Saying that renaming soldiers is immersion breaking is so very wrong on so many levels, naming soldiers after ourselves and others we know IS immersion plain and simple.

If you have concerns about it being unrealistic why not just add a hire custom soldier button that lets you hire someone whose name and country you pick from the get go and they arrive as a rookie like any other hire. Look Chris, the only reason myself and others are bugging you on this is because it's something that I have little doubt a large amount of people would very much like to see in your game.

  7. Callsign isn't a name.

Also, callsign is not displayed everywhere. (it sure would be nice if it were displayed over the soldier in tactical combat, like in JA2)

And also, a lot of my friends and family don't have any nicknames.

So how can I re-crete my frinds of family without it?

Sure, I can play pretend that that big black guy from 'murica is actually my friend Angela for Italy, but that's just not it.

And how else do we send soldiers named for our most hated enemies to scout point without any equipment? :D

  8. In the interests of separating this idea from XCOM:EU, I suggest that we call this an "Honour(Honor) roll". Perhaps accessible in game; but certainly rolled like credits at the end of a campaign (win or loss). It adds a human aspect to the game, and is a reminder of all those lost on the road to victory, or defeat. Hell the idea makes me want to replay the game to avenge my fallen comrades, DIE ALIEN SCUM!

  9. Advanced training would be a good idea but my 2 cents for its implementation goes like this. Firstly the school is a building that takes up base space, secondly the school has to be staffed by a minimum of experienced Xenonauts. I am a huge proponent of the idea that skilled Xenonauts should be able to pass along experience and knowledge to newer recruits (it's a backbone of any military training apparatus).

Consequences would need to be considered however, assuming you need a minimum of ranking Xenonauts to staff the building how many can you afford to commit to training new soldiers? Remember, if this is to remain balanced you simply cannot have access to your experienced soldiers assigned to training while they are teaching a group. 3-5 ranking Xenonauts would be my recommendation for staffing to enable the building to be used at all.

  10. nowhere in the game is the callsign interjected between the first and last name of the soldier. Just pretend that it says "name" instead of "callsign" in front of the field and ignore the soldier file on the soldier screen. It shouldn't be that hard.

Traditionally such things are described as first name "nickname" last name, you are interpreting things far too literally. Also I sincerely hope you are just playing devils advocate, your resistance has no clear logic and you simply espouse the creation of a self concocted fantasy to satisfy my desire for a feature that is either there or isn't. People will want the ability to name their soldiers, some wont care. Why are you so against it?

  11. But you can change it so that it IS your name... why isn't that name change enough?

Unless I'm mistaken the only places the name that isn't changeable (ie not the callsign) is displayed is in the soldiers file on the soldier screen and on the After Action Report (and I'm assuming that is going to change). Everywhere else the callsign is displayed.

I'm not asking because I'm against letting people change the "real name". Technically that the characters named after kickstarter backers show up at all is what they paid for. Not that they would have their name carved in stone. I think that their names should be editable. I just don't understand what the fuzz is about since I consider the callsigns sufficient..

Because a call sign would just be a real life nickname or a more serious designation depending on how serious the player wants to be. Saying a call sign is naming your soldier is just incorrect, you can't just whack your first name and last name into the call sign and go "yay I am in the game now" Ivan "ColonelCraggles" Russionavich. No. Being able to view my personalised soldier is a large part of the attachment to the game. I am sure I am not alone in the feeling that seeing a soldier with my name, and nickname kicking ass makes me feel awesome. Goodspeed Xenonaut Craig, and enjoy your PTSD :P

  12. I feel it should be pointed out that being able to name a soldier after myself and my friends/family has always been integral to the fun factor of X-Com and all its derivatives, taking that away is a critical error. Fair enough if people get a benefit from kick starter; however there is no reason why they cannot be implemented as unique soldiers. If you force people to have to mod basic stuff like this in it's just going to annoy everyone.
