  1. Yeah, I think that would be difficult, but I'm a huge fan of the Frozen Synapse way of doing things. The UFO:AfterXXXX games tried to do this, but they turned out too sluggish for my taste. FS is a brilliant system for turn based combat that adds a whole another dimension to planning.

  2. We need to stop planes from overshooting their targets thought, they do it all the time and it's not exactly smart flying.
Apologies if I sound like a total moron now (haven't played enough of air combat), but shouldn't that be easily solvable simply by allowing the player to adjust airplane speed by pulling the heading line forwards or backwards (kinda like Steambirds)? That would put that power in the hands of the player, and still allow overshooting as a tactic (hey, you never know when it could be useful). Or are we talking about the UFOs overshooting player planes?
  3. Do remember that the game is essentially in alpha. There is a TON of stuff missing in art, sounds, game mechanics and more. There will be lots more when the game is finished. It's just very very far off. Hence pre-order alpha. You're granted access to the dev build, which I've basically never seen any AAA studio do ever. They might have a closed/open really late beta, but never alpha. So expect things to be broken. :D

  4. I have the Steam version and it works just fine with it. HOWEVER, it doesn't allow you to start Xcom through Steam, since it kind of works like a wrapper around it. So you start Extender, and it starts Xcom. It has the drawback of no Steam Community integration or tracking of game time.

I use it for my LP as well.

EDIT: DERP! I should check for new pages before replying.

  5. If there were ever to be made an FPS under the X-Com IP, I would've rather seen something akin to Modern Warfare series (but with actual gameplay, not cinematic QET-fest). Something that puts you right into the action, and having an command interface that anytime during the combat could be paused, zoomed out to and orders issues. It was experienced in first person, but actually PLAYED (important decisions and squad movement) in top down. Of course you would be able to issue quick movement or fire orders in first person.

That I could've accepted as still being an XCOM kinda game. But this just looks like a really bad copy of Bioshock.

  6. Clearly, you have not experienced the awesomeness that is "Richard", anotherdevil.

Also, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Chris was leaning towards NOT being able to breach UFO walls, because it made the UFO assault so much less exciting. Can't find a reliable quote though, and he might've changed opinions in the months I've been away :P

  7. In Sweden, you have the "Nationella Insatsstyrkan" (National Task Force) which is essentially similar to the ones you mentioned, albeit Police, not military. They accept women, but there are unfortunately few women that reach the physical demands of the force. But there are women serving there. Just a little off topic notion :P

  8. Also, on a more serious note, I always thought the UFO:AfterXXXXX games got the aliens rather well. The Reticulans were a single race and the other "aliens" you met were merely mutated humans or livestock. The Star-Trekky mish-mash of races of the first XCOM games always struck me as very odd, though I enjoyed it alot. Gameplay wise they were very good, but storywise it made less sense. Most of those races had absolutely nothing in common. Heck, two of the humanoid races weren't even bipeds.
