  1. With the kind of scale you, or Mr Kaku rather, are talking about, being in 2012 or even 2212 (for example) makes little to no difference. Bringing this line of thinking (hypothetical real world analogies) to a video game is largely pointless.

You have a space ship, and you met much less advanced species as well. Tell 'em as it is Jean-Luc.

  2. Who says they aren't trying? But it's not easy to develop, they need a lot of research on Earth and humans specifically to have a shot at it. And BTW plague was mostly defeated by natural immunity.

It' take our modern science to devise a biological weapon from scratch. They are entire centuries ahead of us if they have FTL. Which means having more advanced methods, tool at their disposal. And who says they don't have some nasty things in their lab. Human beings aren't all THAT complex biologically , just kidnap a hillbilly>fly away>Modify other worldly viruses you have at your desposal>return and done. While a plague may be defeated by natural immunity but by the time that happens humanity will be severly weakened. As evidenced by diseases our immunity isn't an instant can of sick-a-way.

They'll wait till it runs out of bombs and fuel and crash lands in the desert.

It won't even kill 0.1% of them by the time that happens.

Arm with nuke>drop. back to the future>refueal+rearm>back to step one. And who said i have only one of those?

They can wait out radiation? And don't even think of saying pyramids, those werent bomb shelters.

Thats sci-fi science. Practically we have nothing to even get close to that. Did Michio Kaku write that and used the name matt?

Fact of the matter is, it appears that "neutronium" doesn't exist (isn't stable or strong in any sense) and the limits of any atomic material are limited by the electrical forces that keep the atoms together.

    the point

    <-----

    Your head.

I said even if they don't have super materials they'll just won't let you hit them with your longswords. They have more advanced tech which means possibly more ways of killing and ways to strike us in ways we could not anticipate, predict, defend against. And if they don't have any fringe tech to kill in the most unconventional but still effective way possible, being a more advanced civilization they'll be superior in every way shape or form.

It looks like they want something other with Earth than just a cataclysm. That or don't have the resources to push a sizable asteroid.

Have enough resources to overwhelm the earth. Can't push an asteroid. LEGIT! And they don't need a cataclismic one. Just the ones big enough to survive the atmosphere and nuke our military sites.

Biker gang, mining corporation, slave traders, or whoever they are - it's clear that the humanity isn't facing the whole of their civilization. We don't even get to learn where their home is and what the aliens there think of this whole affair.

Which helps how exatly? We are dealing with enough to destroy us(in xeno). And in general corporations are more powerful than biker gangs. Space police to the rescue? Wait, you have just watched avatar didn't you? Of course, ifspear chuckers can beat us than we can beat the aliens right? :D...D: If you are ahead by centuries , if not millenia wouldn't you consider if the monkeys numbers matter? And if they do then just nuke part of the world to dvindle the numbers and win.

    There, i'm done.

FTL=Way more advanced compared to us now,or during th1970,or us twenty years in the future=us being at their mersy. As easy as that.

  3. The disease thing works both ways too, haven't you ever heard of War of the Worlds?

Are you honestly telling me that you actually believe that a technologically superior race will not foresee germs? We get vaccines to fly to an exotic country for f^*@ sake.

Higher science level=better soldiers. Or is a guy with a long sword just as good as a guy with an assault rifle? If so then no one would switch from melee to firearms

You're making a lot of assumptions in that thread. And your counter-arguments are based on assumptions.

Oh i'm sorry, i did not know nukes have unlimited range. I did not know that only humans can invent a sensor. I did not know that a technologically superior military is technologically superior.

Yep, can't rely on the assumptions. The places where i posted the words "assume" was semi serious as those specific points have obvious anwsers. I did not assume "they will all have telepathy and then lobotomize all of us." I said that with superior technology they will have an advantage in those places where technology gives an advantage. Which is everything. And what's wrong with an idea that with extencive knowledge of biology and medicine and stufffs will let them engineer a plague? And if they cant then there are much more ways to skin a human cat.

    In other words.

Extencive technological research tree = defeat in real life unless you win the ultimate jackpot.

And again you should ponder a bit.As history shows with advances in science more ways to kill are in the militarys arsenal. What would they hit us with that we don't know about? ;)

    Dun-Dun-Duuuuun!

  4. And if faster-than-light flight is possible at all, humanity might be as little as a few centuries away.

    Maybe, maybe not.

But for now as long as modern science FTL is impossible. Which means their knowledgeof physics go far beyond our own.

You know during the dark ages building a big metal bird able to carry a lot of people over continents was also imposible as long as their knowledge base was concerned. What could be a name of such a bird? How about 747.

Same here, a lot of their technology might seem as magick to us. Making our impossibilities their strengh and mundane life. Whatever you throw at them they have somethintg better.

Better medicine - release some super plague that kills us off quicker than we develop a vaccine for it.

    Ignoring that.

Pushing some asteroids in our planet direction, and bye bye peoples. Nuking an asteroid is far less effective han most would think.

    Ignoring that.

They come closer - we launch nukes. Even if they don't have anything that can withstand They probably are less restricted energy wise (can hardly see warping space and time with a duracell battery) and their computers are way faster then ours. Imploying lasers(lasers travel at light speed and have no recoil, the perfect point defence weapon) is easy for them and they shoot the nukes out of the sky. Even if they get overwhelmed by the sheer number of nukes. They'l just put their ships into reverse. I am assuming nukes don't have infinite range. And i am allso asuming that a much scientifically superior military also has a way to detect incoming missles fired from around the globe, like we do!

And even if their sub light propulsion is too slow for that.

They can send one ship to nuke a megalopolis or seomething, and see how we react. We launch nukes,if they blow up that one ship, they nuke our military installations from orbit and then step foot on the ground.

They're soldiers would be just better than ours.

Ants outnumber an exterminator a 1.000.000 : 1. Yet i don't hear about the ants being victorious. And again them coming to a conclusion that they can be overwhelmed, they would not engage us(see the next point).

You think if you and a couple dozen of your buddies stock up on gear and go back in time, let's say, 4,000 years, you're going to have no trouble conquering Ancient Egypt?

How will the egyptians stop a B-52 bomber again?(not this point)

I believe we have provided such arguments.

A lot of your points derive from the limitations of our military, reached the point where material resistence can't keep up anymore. yadda yadda. Yeah OUR has reached that point, their much less so. And that sheer numbers may be the anwser.

Having FTL means they are smart, if there is a chance of us overhwhelming them they'll not invade. Any being capable of thought would first evaluate things before going balls deep. Those are not a redneck with a machete thinking he can take on a dozen tigers. No, those are two heavy machine gun teams versus ten knights that are not on horseback, and not in melee

For all we know, you may well be facing its equivalent of a biker gang.

Even if so biker gangs have enogh sence to strike all at once. And Xenonaut aliens would devastate all of the military forces if they did that. And honestly how low is the chance of us lucking out on a small interstellar biker gang that will give us free technological advancement by headbutting our nukes and letting us analyze the tech?

And if that statistically impossible to happen event does happen, then congrats. Humanity is officially the luckiest species in the universe. Achievement unlocked. But lady luck is seldom so kind. And again i stress, the chance of me spontainuisly becoming god and then being shot with a minigun by a pony is higher.

The ONLY way to survive is starting off on a relatively equal technology base.

Which defeats the purpouse of the game. Xcom EU , Xenonauts, original XCOM have no chance in real life.

Be it 1976 or 2176 - game over.

That's why i said the post is pointles. As long as there is an extencive "research tree" between us and the aliens you most probably lose in life. If the game is good then just roll with it. Xeno and XCOM give the bare minimum to help your suspention of disbelief while you play.(''as you will play'' in xenos case, since the thing is not released yet).

And here is something else to ponder on.

500 years ago there were much less ways of waging war. No jetfighters, no carpet bombs, no nukes, no automatic guns, no submarines.

If the aliens have FTL, the thing that is our impossibility. What other ways of warfare does their techological prowess provide that we would not see coming?

Long story short: You guys can not convince me that the real life us stand a chance right now.

Well i'm going to go back to rest. See you later gentlemen.

  5. The most pointless topic i've seen so far.

Unless the two sides start at relativly even technologicaol footing one side is fucked.(Which defeats the point of the game)

NONE of you can provide a SINGLE argument from a realism standpoint of humanity as it is now possibly holding a candle to a civilization capable of effective interstellar flight. Not HWP, not trash man. If the alien force is hostile - we lose.

How about realising that it is just a game.

  6. Isn't that about as subjective as my point? Please point me in the direction of the Funding Nation Quality Control back story page.

The whole point of the X(Xenonauts) is the cooperation of everyone on the planet. While X were an independant oganization when the first ufo was shut down, they need the help of the nations. And when the proposition was made of xenonauts becoming the planets speartip of fighting and researching alien tech it would only stand to reason of every nation demanding a right of placing their liason in the organization to make sure X would not witheld any alien tech or knowledge(i.e. folfilling their part of the deal) before actually commiting. There is no chance in hell any nation would commit to such a project without placing some gurantees.

  7. That's assuming Xenonauts do give them the fruits of their labours.

Yes they do, that's part of the deal. And all nations would already have their people in the Xenonauts base oversighting everything they do, at the start of the pact forming.(airspace + funding for protection + info)

But it would seem they didn't and only Xenonauts downed a craft.

Xenonauts downed the first one, showing they are more effective. The normals could shoot down a ufo later on.

Possibly looking to exploit post invasion geopolitical landscape with advances over other nations.

How about everyone is too busy remedeing their economy, taken care of damage done after the alien invasion, to feasibly wage war.

  8. “Why not permit scientists to be pooled into a single, general pool which can be assigned to projects? By not locking a project to a single base, players would not need to group labs together.“

A number of projects have physical components being investigated. A centralised laboratory project is possibly the most efficient approach, with the huge assumption that it’s a very well equipped research facility.

The internet technology is invented by the military during the setting so multiple bases do work on the same projects if assighned.

  9. If the weapons truly are "HYPER"

As i stated in another thread those aren't trully hyper. Everything has a hypervelocity rating in the game. The plasma projectiles, laser blasts, rifle & pistol rounds. I mean we all can agree that some makarov sidearm doesn't launch slugs at hypevelocity...velocity? It's just a stat that will help the game determine if the round penetrates things. Like glass, wood, not so wood alien armor(later game weapons)

  10. Hypervelocity impacts actually cause fluid-like behavior in both materials, so the higher the velocity, the less intact is the projectile. Tank rounds outright enter as mostly shards (and that's a lot more effective than if they entered intact).

For hypervelocity bullets, they tend to disintegrate after impact.

You're going too literal about it. In this game hypervelocity just means if the projectile has enough force to penetrate the obstacle.

  11. Will probably throw another $100 at star citizen

What do you mean "another" ? Kickstarter doesn't take your money if the project failed. So you would probably throw the same $100 at star citizen.

  12. UFO self-destruct timer in Xeno might work

What timer? The energy is extracted by using laser beams on alenium to release enrgy. All you have to do is turn the dial up to eleven.

That's pretty much how alenium based explosives work. There is no "charging time", no "meltdowns" just firing all the laser emitters in the energy source at once and barabing.

    Alien Supply Network

Mission: Hit the aliens by surprise during a refueling/landing operation.

    Alien Jamming Frequencies

+25% radar coverage for 1 week

How would that increase anything and only for one week? All that can happen is that your detection resumes as normal or you integrate the alien tech into your detection methods and gain a permanent boost.

All they need to refuel is to insert a yellow rock in a refrigirator sized generator and off you go! Landing? Aren't those terror missions and setting up an alien base?

    Terror Intelligence

3 days warning before next attack

Eh should be possible to implement although we would probably not see that until the very very late game. Reverse engineering a gun that is in fine working orther in in front of you is one thing, but deciphering a language of really untalkative aliens is quite another.

  13. NONONO i HATE the cartonish shit look -_-

That's called aesthetic. And borderlands has a cell shaded look. You may not like it but for pete sake stop using the word "cartoony" , it doesn't descredit the art style in any way. Cartoony how? Does it look like tom and jerry, oggy and the cockroaches, Batman TAS, anime? There all have their own different look, and thinking that the word "cartoony" is actually in any way is a good description af anything is piss poor thinking. There are so many aesthetics and yet people who know only one word still lump all of that under a "cartoony" banner. It doesn't make you look "mature" or as an intelegent critic. It makes you look like a teen who wants to enjoy adult themes without knowing what they are. So tired of that.

the only reason to use such a look is if your unable to make it really scary/realistic looking and in full 3d that would definately be the preferred option.

How old are you? It really wouldn't be the preffered option.

Just because something is photo realistic doesn't make it's better. The only reason you make the game have a certain style is because you want your game to have an artistical aesthetic, or a unique looking world. Do you know how stupid a lot of things can look in photo realistic 3d without a aesthetically desighned world to back it up? And how boring it would be if all games would look alike just because a bunch of teens think that "realistic" is the best artistical direction of all time.

  14. And ST:TNG even has an episode - a trekkie might be able to point it out exactly, I think it was a two-parter in 4rd-5th-6th season - where it's given an in-universe explanation

That still doesn't make them any less stupid. And most of those aliens just have a bunch of periferals the don't need and/or are really uncomfortable to have all the time. It's lake having a permament beer hat without any beer. The extinct aliens were dicks.

  15. think GGE is drunk or something

    No i'm not.

that sentence (starting with "so you think") doesn't even make sense.

Yes it does. Obviously you have never even heard of captain planet and he man. I just described those two shows in a nutshell, and how they are SO rediculous they can never be used to actually defend anything in a positive light.
