How many sortie themes will there be?
How many air combat themes?
How many main map screen themes?
Given that these are the meat-and-potatoes of the game, I would hope there will be a wide, wide variety!
The main menu screen will be as is. Perhaps a bit longer, not to sure yet.
All the other tunes will go by 3.
3 Air Combat, 3 Ground Combat Day, 3 Night, etc...
If times permits it, i'll add up a fourth one where i can (probably Geoscape & Day GC). Perhaps even after game release, if Chris agrees.

Thanks for the comments! I'm happy that the music is working for you.
Spending lots of time in making it as good as possible! More coming soon, after i come back from my vacation!

Hah, funny to see the Air Combat music on a BF3 gameplay.
-
Hey that would be a pretty good idea.

Rarely does game music make any kind of impression on me. (Frankly, I'm generally just grateful if it's not excruciatingly annoying. I really don't understand all you people that get so in to it!)
However, playing the demo yesterday...I was impressed with what I was hearing. It was perfect!
Thank you for catching the soul of the game so effectively, Aleksi! I'm really looking forward to hearing more!
Thanks for your comment Oktober. Its heart warming to see these kind of posts. I hope the rest of the music coming along will be as enjoyable for you, and others! I'm working hard on it.

I agree heartily that this game's music is excellent. Whenever I played X-Com I found that the music added a layer of oppression that was very similar to John Carpenter's The Thing. That steady drumming synth music made the atmosphere of the film feel as if doom was waiting around any corner, and so far Xenonauts is doing a good deal of justice to that legacy.
Well, i had Chris pointing out the X-COM music to me, and i did my little research. He wanted me to do something in the same mood. Of course, i have my own touch (like Xenonauts has), but i try to remain close to the genre. I'm glad most of you like it so far.
-
Yes, you'll find it in the game's directory. And as for the youtube link, it is pretty much illegal since the game isn't released, the music unfinished and the poster didn't have the authorization to do so by Chris nor me.
But, we'll be nice.
In the future i'll probably create my own channel and add some music. With the final scores.

Audio:However right now the soundtrack is very limited, with only three tracks I have heard and some similarities between two out of the three, I found myself hoping for more variety. I do hope to hear more when newer builds land (as X-COM did have a lot of quite catchy tracks) but again I do believe that the soundtrack so far does well at creating a good atmosphere for a game of this nature.
Don't worry, you'll have plenty of music to listen to in the final version of the game.

Great representation of the D3 launch day.
Ha ha! I love that!
I'm still waiting for my copy... should arrive tomorrow...

Alot of inde bands and musicians used to print their own cd,s on Cd-r
Before the widespread use of Youtube etc.
And there are still a few bands that do this but its mostly used for demos these days.
Annyway im done with this discussion now
It seams we have difrent opinions and i respect that,
il keep to my opinion and those disagree with me keep to theirs.
Relax guys. For the moment, not plan for printing the soundtrack on a CD. Perhaps if Chris decides to make a printed version of Xenonauts, we can agree on some kind of digipack that would also include the soundtrack on a CD.
On my part, i plan to sell the soundtrack once the game is out, with about twice the amount of music currently in-game. So, for people that really enjoyed the music, they can have more for a decent price. Help the musician!
If they is an interest, i will print a nice digipack CD. But i won't do it until i'm assured its going to sell. Printing a quality CD today is affordable, but is still a cost. Wait & see...

Would base attack/defense be their own categories or lumped up with ground battle?
Well, we didn't discuss this with Chris. So, i don't know. For the moment, the main parts of the game will have music. Then, we'll discuss more, if Chris needs more. I'd be glad to, its a blast making music for this game!
The air combat music got a revamp since the first version. It should appear soon. Much better in my opinion, and more punchy.
Thanks for your comments guys, its always nice to see people like it. (But i don't really mind if people don't, unless its a majority!)

Thanks for the comments! Working right now on the new Ground Combat music.
Basically, for the newcomers, every part of the game should have 3 different musics. Air combat, ground combat day, night, Geoscape, etc...

Just use Bootcamp for now. Then, if the game works out well, Chris said he'd look into an OSX port.

The update process works fine for me, but i must say that Desura takes quite a long time to prepare the update.

Is Aleksi compareing the musician with desura? or compareing Universal Music and Warner with Desura? I got the impressions that it was the latter?
Well, what i was trying to explain breivly, is that 15% for a community, downloadable game via a client application, game cd key system, update functionality, etc... is really fair from my point of view. I was comparing this with the music business (which i know) and that is very unfair. Especially today. I wouldn't even dare of putting here an experience i had with Universal.
But, if we look at Apple with iTunes, its about a 30% commission if i'm not mistaken. And after all the expenses you have aside from that (tax, etc), i can loose quite a bit. Desura seems pretty Indie friendly with its 15%.
-
15% commision from desura.....wow, are they in the credit card business too?
I don't see what is so shocking about that? 15% is very descent for the service they provide. I should show you the contract of a musician with Universal Music, or Warner... Desura's 15% is a present in comparison.

The Music for the night mission's is simply amazing. Its very creepy and it sounds like the UFOs engine is humming after it crashed
Thanks, i'm glad you like it. Its going to have a bit of tweaking still to do, but i have lot more similar tunes coming up.

I'm the only team member based in the UK, I think. It wouldn't exactly be a massive event
Well i'm only 20 minutes away now. Really... 1h20, but with the time change, if i take the train at 9h, i arrive at 9h20.

Well, i'm always open for a good beer!

Boy did i play this game on Atari ST....
-
He looks sooooo mad!

In the geoscape music there is a sort of click/pop every few seconds of the game that is quite annoying. It stands out from the music being played, as it has a slightly higher volume. Could you remove it?
Could you be more specific? Which Geoscape music? Where do you hear clicks and pops. Are you sure it isn't your system having a hard time to manage the game?
-
More music sequences would be nice (I really love the music so far !), also for the air combat.
That's on the way!

Ambiance has the trouble of not mixing well with background music - it's generally a one-or-the-other issue, and the way things are now, it's looking like we're going the BGM route.
Although jungle ambiance always adds a fun Predator/MGS3 spin on things.
Maybe an option to choose a toggle between ambiance and BGM in-game? Or just use the creepy-alien BGM for more significant missions like urban areas and base assault/defense missions, while using ambiance for low-intensity missions out in the boonies? Sounds neat.
I can tell you that the night missions will have creepy sfx/music. Its not music like in the day time, but more likely distant sounds, and pads. Diablo 2 like in the Xenonauts world. You could have some processed wind sounds, etc... Still in construction though. I have 4 finished tunes for this part of the game. But, since its not tested yet, we ought to see if it works well.
Music is great

I think in the case of Xenonauts, this only applies to the Air Combat music & the combat tunes. The Geoscape music comes back to where it was when you jump into a combat scene. At least, it should.
As for variety, as you may heard, i always try to change tones and orchestrations often, while keeping the general mood of the game/scene. This is to give the most longevity to the music. It always tends to be redundant with time.
The AC music is the most difficult because its short. The 2 other tunes will come out soon, so it will add more to it. Perhaps, in the future, they'll be more versions, with different arrangements. We'll see how it goes, and how Chris feels about it.
Can't really do that. For several reasons. The first is a copyright issue. Well, i could put in a little hint and that would be fine, but it takes another approach in how i would work. Secondly, i don't want to.
For different reasons, but to make it short, i'd rather take Xenonauts like something really different from X-Com. Catching the mood, yes, but i prefer to give it its own musical identity.
