  1. It mostly depends on the mission... To take on a small scout I usually take 2 veteran troopers and 2 rookies with the veterans providing covering fire and draining most of the health of the enemies so the rookies can finish the job... Terror missions it's usually 6-8 troopers with 2-3 veterans and 4-5 rookies.

  2. This last posts are going off-topic... In this thread we are to discuss the details of that X-COM dlc/expansion not the good and bad of the other games or what firaxis did or what shouldn't have (this is just my humble opinion of course, most likely shared by others).

So... Let's get back on topic shall we? Signal Lost? We might see a dlc where the fight takes place on a secret base... The moon? Too cliche maybe... Mars? Too far away... But Under the sea? Most likely.

  3. Well, as a man who spend part of his game budget on GOG getting UFO: Afterblank series... It's really worth it's 20 dollars on Steam? Is there a demo or a more detailed websites and info on the AoW series?

Which I almost try once but... I decided to buy Half-Life, the very first game I own and played... that was about 13 years ago.

  4. That last picture by a333, it's pretty much my "Tactical" retreat when I get overwhelmed by aliens... With the difference that I don't save the civies (Meatshields and alien magnets... Screw them! Like they are going to cut all of it for a few dead people) or let a sergeant die... A rookie fills that role much better.

  5. Considering how it's supposed to be only "Favorite" (i.e. only one) I chose the original X-COM: EU (or UFO Defense). TFTD was just way too rage inducing, and I've never tried Apocalypse.

EU 2012 was...alright. But too much of it was just..."meh" for my tastes...

Hopefully, those "Mehs" or at least some of them will be fixed in the eventual submarine expansion.

  6. In my opinion UFO: Extraterrestrials was a bit bland for my taste even with the mods I never got hooked to it... The Afterblank series (which I'm currently playing so... No spoilers) it's quite good I found the whole plan-based real-time movement a bit awkward and the pathfinding... Oh the pathfinding... but still pretty good not like X-COM: UFO Defense or TFTD but it's worth the few dollars it cost now.

X-COM: Enemy Unknown, the new one... While it will never beat the original I found it to be pretty good and entertaining... I was very disappointed with the Geoscape features, the single base and no attacks on the base (Nooooo! My elevator of death is lost!) but I liked a lot the battlescape... I guess we'll have to wait for the eventual expansion pack that give us those missing features and the fun undersea and costal combat.

  7. Are you refering to Monty Pyhtons self defense against someone armed with fruit course? That didn't end so well for the person with the banana...

Of course not... Have you seen "The Naked Gun 2 1/2"? The shower fight scene?

  8. It's not very practical to board a UFO in the atmosphere of Earth, you will have to take into account several variables, like wind speed, altitude, speed of the human craft and alien craft, etc.

And besides, you must find a way to hold the boarder(s) to the alien ship without them falling to their deaths because of the high wind they will have to face.

  9. How about some armored support for the allied military? An APC (might be too big or overpowered) or some other form of vehicle (A jeep or some other vehicle, armed with a machinegun) to help allied soldiers to fight the mid to late game alien units.

That will give them a better fighting chance against the aliens... And provide a better distraction so the xenonauts troops can maneuver and destroy the alien forces or escape to fight another day.

  10. a monkey launcher....shoots ill tempered monkeys armed with swords at unsuspecting aliens...they fling poo too

Don't be silly! Monkeys require too many important resources like bananas (These are needed for food and self-defense) and diapers (You know, we don't want them to fill the helicopter or the backpacks of our troops with feces.)

What we need it's an hedgehog launcher not only it's lethal by it's spikes! But our little spikey friend, with some training, can force his/her way to the interior of the alien body tear apart his soft and squishy interior!

And the best part? Is that after the war its over, our brave soldiers will have a hardy and loyal friend that will defend him/her and his/her family against any threat from burglars to revengful aliens to angry ex-spouses!

Look at him, ready to fight and die for his planet!

  11. If realism it's applied to the humans and their equipment, it should be applied to the aliens too... And if it's applied the game won't be very fun unless you enjoy watching your troops die by shots of hot plasma to their chest, or the large amount of battlefield amputations caused by the aliens to your soldiers with their weapons or your futile yet heroic attempts to shot down UFOs with your planes and their heat-seeking, radar-guided missiles or cannons which will be of limited use against an alien craft more advanced that any aircraft in the planet... And last but not least, aliens with psychic powers that incapacitate your troops by just looking at them.

  12. If melee attacks were always a 100% chance to hit, then that could be a high risk/ high reward thing. Although I would think that it wouldn't do much to aliens that came out in the late game.

I don't think melee attacks should be 100% chance to hit... Just like us, the aliens have self-preservation instinct and they will try to dodge the knife-wrench... In any case I think the chance to hit should be determined with the dexterity and the damage with the strength of the soldier.

  13. To me, the best aliens would be:

The Xeelee (Just read about their technological power it's astounding)

The Tyranids (A race that comes from another galaxy to devour another, who knows how many other galaxies have fallen to them)

The Xenomorphs (Even though, The Tyranids are clearly based on the Xenomorphs, I like the former more.)

The Orks (They are one of the most successful race in their universe... They are literally everywhere and outnumber every other race with the exception of the Tyranids, of course.)

The Tarka (Their culture and their martial attitude it's what enthrall me)

The Vaygr (I'm about 70% sure they are aliens of some sort... Well more like an alien version of the mongols and their invasions.)

But, of course the best race of all it's...

The humans... Sure, some of us are bloodthirsty, corrupt, ravagers and evil, etc... But has humanity met another race to compare our behavior as a race to theirs? What if they are more bloodthirsty and their culture revolves about death and blood sacrifice? Or they are so "Evil" that crushing a box of puppies it's breakfast for them?

  14. I will like to see prototypes of the Power Armour and be able to use said prototypes... Let me explain better.

Once you research the power armour you should be able to build basic prototypes of said armour, which are prone to a variety of mechanical issues (I.E: "The servos in the armour are jammed!" and the soldier loses a turn or more.) that will make it very fun... And with more research you are able to build better suits of the same armour and you eliminate the mechanical issues.
