  1. Congratulations on the Xenonauts game release! I just want to add my voice to the "thank you for making this game!" crowd!

    :)

I bought the premium preorder back in October 2012. I received an email that the STEAM key is now available for Xenonauts. I do not have a steam account. So now I have to decide if I should create a Steam account or wait for the Desura release. :)

In the meantime I am enjoying some of the youtube vids of the release and that one livestream posted in another thread.

    cheers!

  2. Estimating completion time for any medium to large software project is VERY difficult. Larger companies can throw more resources at a project if there is a definite deadline to make, but smaller companies usually don't have that luxury. Larger companies also tend to have experts on certain subjects that help them solve technical problems faster than a small company can. I personally have never been in a large development effort that finished exactly on time. Usually there are simply too many unforeseen problems and critical processes that don't get into the initial design or requirements that throw the already nebulous estimates even further off. Then you've got scope creep (this one can be controlled by a good project manager.) Games in particular also have to run on many different platforms that adds further complication.

One of my programming instructors many years ago told the class once, "QUALITY, COST or DEVELOPMENT TIME I can give you any ONE of them at the expense of one of the other two." I've always remembered that and it's never been wrong. Chris has TIME and QUALITY to work with, but since he is on a set budget (Kickstarter & Pre-orders) he has to keep the cost to a set amount. Personally, I'd rather he sacrifice TIME and have a QUALITY game instead of releasing a POS to meet the clamors of a few people to get it out.

That's a good adage. And I suppose it suggests that the sensible thing is to aim for quality and sod the rest :) Aka done when it's done.

this sounds like it is based on the even older production management adage of, "fast, cheap, or good. Pick any two."

I prefer quality and depth to a product and it looks like xenonauts will deliver both so I have more patience for this project.

    :)

  3. I've only played the first few missions, but I can't say I like it. All in all, I find the game shallow and lacking in depth.

    - Why can't my troops take proper cover? You should be able to hide behind a car without parts sticking out.

    - Why can't I set my troops view direction? It's not clear to me if the troops have a 360 degree view cone, or only view the in the direction they happen to view in ...

    - Why can't I set the walk path?

    - Why can't I choose between an aimed shot, burts fire, etc? Now troopers fire half a magazine at every alien. Huge waste of ammo.

    - Why can't I ever move after a shot? This (almost) always leaves your troops in vulnerable positions.

    - It looks like aliens automatically see me once my troops see them ...

    - Why is there so little variation in equipment? I can choose a grenade and medkit, but not 2 grenades and 1 medkit OR 3 grenades. I also *have* to take a pistol as a sidearm. I don't need no stinkin' pistol, I want extra grenades!

    - Do my troops really have infinite ammo?

    - Why can't I just choose weapons freely? Why is there only one type of rifle?

    - Why do aliens spawn out of thin air when it's plot-conventient?

    - Why are the controls so inhumanly annoying?

    - Why does everyone speak to me as if I'm a 8 year old child?

    etc. etc...

The reviews have been so overwhelmingly positive that I almost thought there are two games out there...

Only upshot so far: I've ended up here :-)

Yeah, I managed to play a few rounds of the new Xcom on my friend's Xbox and have similar issues to you and Raidsoft with the gameplay. I'm glad I did not buy this game and instead spent it xenonauts. imho, ymmv

  4. Hello

Sorry about "spaming" Your forum. It wasn't my intention. When we make this game we will support other projects - we are a part of Kickback program. For now our budget is very low, so that we can't support Xenonauts or anyone else :( But if there will be Xenonauts 2 we will support it! :)

You can also check our newest game video.. if you want. It's our actual game footage from space battle module

bullshit! that is a cop out!

do not stuff your face with McDonald's food for a couple of meals and you can preorder one standard package for only $19.99!

  5. Chris - just tell everyone that it will be released when you think it should be, and not before. You can't win! If you release too early people will say the game is buggy and will be put off anyway. We can all play other games until you are ready to release. Some people don't realise just how complex xenonauts is/is becoming. We should think ourselves lucky we will have it at all!

    hear, hear!

If I was a moderator I would insist that the thread title be changed by the OP to avoid giving out erroneous information! but, hey, that is me.

  6. Alright so I found out yesterday Firaxis is making a new Xcom called Enemy Unkown that is supposed to be very close to basically the best game ever, 94's UFO Defense.

So I become ecstatic, after figuring out how to download and setup the original and a few hours of that I started thinking about the choice of PC vs Console, which led me to do more research on the game, which led me to Xenonauts. Another Xcom: UFO Defense type game.

SO my question is whats up with that? I am getting the impression that Xenonauts is going to be a very close replication of the original with a different story line and a bunch of different proper nouns. Firaxis's game seems to claim to be going for a replica while slighltly simplifying the game (only one base, 4-6 man teams, no time units, which they may be able to make work).

I seem to be able to find more information on Xcom: Enemy Unknown though, so could you guys help me out and give me a detailed response comparing the two?

As they say in the XCEU developer interviews the game is a re-imagining of the original Xcom.

I played XCEU at my friends house. I thought some parts were done well and others not so well. Overall the game does not attract my attention so I will pass and wait for Xenonauts.

One thing that does sound interesting in XCEU is the multiplayer. Has anyone had a chance to try this out?

  7. Hi,

New forum member and original Xcom player here!

After reading the reviews of the new Xcom it did not sound entirely pleasing to me as the original Xcom. A member at SimHQ and boardgame geek both mentioned this game called xenonauts and here I am! :D This game sounds much more satisfying than the new Xcom so I will buy the premium member package to support the devs!

    :D
