  1. Hey, first time poster long time strategy game fan, and I like the thoughts going on! I've played through Xenonauts a couple times (many soldiers lost) and I'm thinking on the various UFO things.

Naturally, the first thoughts that come to mind is, "What?! Outrageous! How can there ever be HUMANS with ALIEN raghlflarghle...!" Yet thinking more on it, things are starting to make a little sense, at least on the Cold War front. Naturally, you'll probably end up doing some take downs on both fronts, but occasionally I'd think that the two biggest factions (Soviets and the US of course) would come to you asking for "favors."

Now, I'm not talking about "give us tech" style things, but things that'll hamper the other side. Things such as: "Hey, I see you're good with all this shooting down stuff buuut...Whoopsies how clumsy of us! All this cash everywhere! I...suppose you could have it, if you do a little 'favor' for us." Simple things naturally, at least at first. You might start with "don't shoot down that UFO over Soviet airspace," before getting direct favors like, "I see there's a UFO crashed in the middle of that US Military base, maybe you can ah...'acquire' some intelligence for us.." where you might end up having to steal like a briefcase or even "accidentally" shooting a target in the back...repeatedly.

Of course, doing this sort of stuff would upset the other nation, whether by not shooting down UFO's or learning you're a bunch of no good thieving sorts. Funding would drop, but it'd be compensated by the other side eventually giving you even more funding, or quick infusions of cash and equipment. You could take missions for both sides of course, but that'd be even more detrimental to your funding as their view of you would simply drop enough that it'd have been better to stick with one in the first place.

Meanwhile the aliens, those poor saps getting shot about by your troops, at least are honest in their intentions of trying to enslave the planet to their will. While you're chumming it up with your faction of choice, they're working with the other one, letting out alien agents to try to gain power in the other countries. You might even come across these agents in your hunts, with taking out an alien ship in "enemy" territory you'll come across suspicious looking individuals that may be in conflict with either the local military or guarding their ship from you, as if expecting your arrival.

Of course, the threat of nukes should be omnipresent, as both countries work to oppose one another in their subtle ways, things should get messier as the game goes on. Answering the call in certain countries should show open conflict, with both sides soldiers, and their respective tech levels, facing off on the field as you try to finish dealing with the aliens. As things fall apart in both sides you may see brief flashes on the Geoscape, as a newspaper flashes on the screen, declaring that both sides have begun using nuclear weapons against strategic targets. The panic stricken, mind controlled other faction has decided thusly: If they must fall, then so shall you.
