  1. Hey guys a bit of advice. Don't look at the Steam forums. Unless you want to be infuriated. So many morons on there posting 'This is an X-COM clone!' 'Nothing original!'. It's like going on the CS:Go forum and seeing 'This is a DOOM rip off!!'. Jesus...

  2. What are some of your favorite roguelikes?

I recently started playing DoomRl and am completely obsessed.

The game has recently had a tile set made for it by Derek Yu, the creator of Spelunky. Anyone who is a fan of Doom or Roguelikes should check it out!

  3. Yeah I just tried it myself.

It's a strange jump from turn based to real time - it doesn't seem to work from what I've seen :(

It's incredibly hard to keep track of things when it's all real time. For instance, I kept three of my squad members back while I got one to crawl to a good vantage spot. He was spotted after he took out one enemy by every enemy on the map, killed in about 4 hits, and then all the enemies were somehow magically alerted to the rest of my squads presence and proceeded to kill all of them.

A bit broken. Hope they fix it >.<

  4. Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos

the game was absolutely awesome, especially with the various community mods installed (there were quite a few) ... and was one of few space sims to actualy use newtonian physics with stuff like movement inertia etc (instead of behaving in airplanes-in-space kind of way most space sims use).

highly recommended to any space sim fan

Thanks man, it looks awesome considering it's from 2001. I really like the look of the UI as well, very clean and retro.

I bought Evochron Mercenary off Steam the other day too, you should check it out. My only complaint however is that it's really slow paced..

  5. The Space Simulator genre is defiantly one of the best and under appreciated out there.

One little gem that I play to death occasionally is Escape Velocity: Nova - a game that went under everyone's radar most likely...

And another which is still in Beta 0.5.0 'NAEV'. It seems to be coming along nicely, the devs have taken a lot of inspiration from Escape Velocity while improving on a lot. It's also free ;)

Any of you guys have a favorite?

  6. Morrowind - Still the best TES game ever!

    Planescape: Torment

    Fallout Series

    Baldurs Gate 1 & 2

    Deus Ex

    System Shock 1 & 2

    Escape Velocity: Nova

    C&C Red Alert

    DOOM

    X-Com:U.D

Maybe it's too soon? But I'm gonna have to finish by saying Minecraft. It's one game that I think we can all agree took everyone by complete surprise. The amount of hours me and my friends have put into that game...haha, yep it makes the list.

  7. Last Thursday, Steam had a sale where it was reduced from $5.00 to $1.69 - did anyone else grab it?

It's was my first time playing the game by the way, and it eventually led me here (I would have been in year 1 when it came out) Gotta say I am hugely psyched for this Xenonauts because of this! The alpha build seems so much like the original, but not to the point of complete emulation - and all the while improves on so many little things which make it so much more epic :)

Can anyone recommend the other UFO games? I did some research and the reviews aren't too great, but I just want to hear your opinions.

  8. You've forgotten about UFO2:SOE. Or whatever it is called.

Never heard of that series until then...guess that's not a point in it's favor. Not to mention their first game seemingly didn't get the best reviews. The fact is, Xenonauts has people talking and it's only in the alpha build.

Besides, when you're making games competition is unavoidable. Look at all the freaking FPS games there are...and they sell like hotcakes.

The fans know when it's being done right, and if it is done right the fans will play it. I can't remember how many people I see playing both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 for instance.

  9. Zhab, I think you are right with your concerns. However you need to remember - Xenonauts and the Firaxis remake are going to be the only two new Squad Based tactical games out there on the market. They are only going to have each other to 'compete' with.

However, I am nonetheless glad we not only have Xenonauts, a game being made by fans and created purely out of passion, but I am also glad that Firaxis got hold of the X-com licence before someone like EA...that would be a sad day indeed. I'll be playing both, and I am sure every other fan will be dying to get their hands on both as well.
