  1. No, it's a typically American thing because of how their country and culture was founded. Many that migrated to America in the begining was doing so seeking religious freedom. A lot of victorian values went into the core beliefs and norms as a result. They still have a lot of refernces to religion in nonreligious contexts in a whole different way compared to at least Swedish culture.

But they used to be cool. Back in the day. Or maybe I was too young to notice that you can carve someone up with a rusty spoon, as long as you don't say a bad word while doing it.

  2. I didn't say "separate but equal." Men and women are not equal and the military does not acknowledge them as being equal. What I said is that if you want women in combat arms and you want it to be functional and effective and not simply a public relations thing, then they have to be kept separate.

But this is actually and effect of our/your culture and conditioning. This can be changed. And would have to. I seem to recall some women

Such nit picky complaints has to go. :P
  3. We used to have the draft here and I clearly remember thinking "damn, this is not fair. If women don't have to do it why should men? Make everybody go or nobody. WOMEN IN THE ARMY!!!one11one!!!".

Heh, I just used to think they were lucky. Then I served and was more like "Everybody should do this for a year!!11!1"

Now, they draft more and more women every year, and quite a few sign up as well. But they usually go for rank.

Oh, and our law actually states that any person inside the Norwegian border can be drafted at any time. Their nationality, gender, colour and religion does not matter. It's never practised of course, but kinda cool.

  4. Presumably something to do with distracting the men in the heat of combat. Or making them do stupid things to protect the women or some sort. Which might not be entirely unjustifiable, but I agree with you.

"Hey Vasquez, you ever been mistaken for a man?"

    "No. Have you?"

Damn, now I have to watch Aliens. Brb

  5. But bouncing cool locations back and forth still doesn't hurt.

I'd like to see bigger industrial areas.. However I'm not sure how easy that will be. Making a bunch of 50x50 submaps would be quite a chore. But hey, we've got money for a dedicated mapper! :D

  6. This is the second time I've seen this misspelling in this thread (and the billionth time on the internet), and I've just gotta ask.

Where are you getting the 'n' in 'turrent' from? Turret does not have an 'n' in it, and it doesn't even sound like it does. Is this some kind of extremely odd European thing? Do you guys across the pond actually pronounce 'turret' with an 'n'?

No. But we do pronounce herbs with an H. Because there's an H in it. :P

  7. How are you guys actually managing to shoot down UFOs and get ground missions?

I've shot down around 25 crafts, all over land, and not one has generated a crash landing/ground mission for me to send my troops to.

    Not a single one.

    What am I doing wrong?

    1) Where they fighters?

Only Light Scouts, Scouts, and Corvettes leave crash sites afaik.

    2) Did the end of battle say that it was destroyed or crashed?

Destroyed enemy ships do not leave crash sites. Try causing less damage.

  8. And I say you can't have an X-Com game without female soldiers. It's the same thing to me.

The Xenonauts is not an entity of a government, and the aliens did not pop up a few days before the game started. It's 20 years later in fact. Everything is well within reason for Goldhawk to include females, to the delight of old fans, and for those that don't want them, it's a matter of erasing a few lines of text with notepad.

(Edit; Why does my avatar change size all the time?)

(Editt; and of course it changed back with that edit.)

  9. Troops on par with your starting soldiers are considered quite powerful. It seems the developers doesn't want us to achieve such fine specimens with just cash. And I support that.

It doesn't take very long to skill up accuracy to a very nice level actually, I routinely have mine make amazing shots that would never have been possible at that stage in X-Com.

I'm not sure, but I don't think how stats are used now would enable someone to only be accurate with a sniper rifle, and not any other weapon. However the weapons accuracy itself plays a large part.

  10. There were plans to have more training options, but I think they decided to stick with the one that's in now because it would be too easy to get good troops without risk. Or something.

There will be a kind of role system you can attach to soldiers so you know what kind of role they have. Apart from that, be mindful of how the system works, and you can train your men and women in the field quite effectively. :)

  11. I have to disagree with the intensity of a billion suns. You seem able to suspend your strict rules when it comes to weapons and aliens, but not when it comes to who would serve in a unit recruited well after humans had the startling revelation that we are, in fact, not alone in the universe, and the neighbours are not friendly.

I do not see this hurting the game more than not including them would, as fans of the original would cry out in anguish.

Luckily, they are in, but it'll probably be quite easy for you to mod them out so you can have it your way as well.

  12. I'd like there to be some micromanagement left to be honest.

It's part of the charm having five projects but having to shuffle my engineers between them as I can't do them all at full efficiency. But having a couple of guys on ammo after you have your initial batch seems to be enough.

The idea it self is a good one though, and it might be worth doing just to have the game be more modern for all the kidz.

  13. Uhm.. I'm reading this another way. The pause between shots is because the aliens are using single shots, not burst fire. If you want this to speed up, the game itself would need to speed up I think, and speed back down whenever something happens that you can actually see. So not very feasible.

  14. Ah with the weather we have been having over the last few days here I am loving the BBQ idea.

    Burgers, sausages, chicken wings...

My mind is aflame with the possibilities.

We've had snow. I wasn't sure I'd make it home after work yesterday because I've go summer tyres on. >.<
