Believe it or not I was thinking about Mandate just and how I'd like to make a thread about it.

It's basically a sci-fi Mount & Blade where you freely traverse a star map with your crew and ship engaging in all sorts of dubious activity. It features tactical ship to ship combat with individually damagable hardpoints and components as well as boarding actions.

Aside from usual stat allocation you also create a history for you character similar to how you answer questions in M&B and you can also design your ships' appearance and functionality.

Of course there's a number of factions to whom you can give or sell your loyalty like the Mandate (The Empire), rebels, pirates, etc. The setting is dominated by the Mandate Empire ruled by Anastasia of the Romanov family so you get this Russian nobility vibe in a sci-fi context though other factions do exist within the empire.

I'm already a backer, and I hope they get it funded!

I don't know why it's not garnering more interest, it looks like they've done a lot of work, and they are providing some substantial updates etc.

Maybe because the devs are not that well known or the shoddy voice acting in the pitch video. It's really my type of game yet I found out about it only a few days ago. I'm assuming it's a long KS campaign (60 days)?

Yeah it is, but they're half way there now...

Here are the video games I'm currently backing, or thinking of:

Paradise Lost (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1183462809/paradise-lost-first-contact)

Awesome looking retro style metroid/castlevania cross (not that I ever played those games, or really like most pixel graphics games...)

Confererate Express (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/829559023/confederate-express)

Also retro pixel style, with fun looking gameplay and skill progressions and they really have a handle on the graphics and lighting etc.

The Mandate (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1964463742/the-mandate/posts/658822?ref=activity)

This just looks like fun. Ship vs ship combat as well as tactical engagements (even at the same time!)

Stasis (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bischoff/stasis-2d-isometric-scifi-horror-adventure-game?ref=live)

2D isometric horror game. Looks awesome, the guy has a really impressive website, and there is a free alpha demo that is really quite good. Could use some hints but I got there eventually

It's not only funded, but somehow jumped nearly 80,000 in the last day of a 60 day campaign to hit some stretch goals like away missions on planets.

Yeah, I'm a backer. In all honesty I have misgivings about their ability to pull it off since their design goals are very ambitious and I dislike how their claim it's an AAA game despite the funding available to them (though I suspect they have financial support outside of KS). PE, Torment and WL2 raised millions yet those are still not considered AAA games.

However simultaneous starship combat and boarding actions + rpg elements in a Mount & Blade-esque sandbox universe is almost a dream come true and I couldn't not jump in. Love the story/setting as well.

Likewise - also a backer. I guess Xenonauts has renewed my faith that games like this can meet your hopes! It's a while since the days of games like Project Nomad and Space Rangers 2 (ie, space opera with more than just shooting & between mission cutscenes).

As far as the AAA bit goes, eh - I may just be getting old, but AAA doesn't always equate to big budget for me, it's the quality of the game itself that does that. (some of the best games around are small team/one man jobs). We'll just have to wait & see on wether the team can deliver, I guess.

Yes but the AAA classification is based on budget and production value (in the high 8 or 9 digit development price range), not one's personal enjoyment. Makes the devs seem a bit dishonest in that regard but maybe they have their own definition of what AAA means or whatever.

Just ran into this. Dex, a 2D side scrolling cyberpunk rpg. And it really is an rpg. XP, skills, different equipment, stealth, hacking, cyberspace, dialogues, implants, multiple solutions, it's all there. It's not as indepth as in full fledged rpgs but the point is that's it's not merely a 2D shooter with a cyberpunk coating.
