Amiga4ever
Is it possible to change UFO icon on geoscape? Red triangle with alien head isn't a good idea
anotherdevil
why is it not a good idea? What would you suggest instead?
Amiga4ever
Round simple UFO will be OK ))

Gorlom
The reason its a triangle is to show its direction.
KOKON
I would like to see it in a tactical airmap style. Smth like if it was projected on the map by sprcialist-operator. Alien face is in the arcade-style. White sqare like in xcom is much less arcade. Remember. Real ufologist would never use an arcade toy Edited January 26, 2012 by KOKON
Gauddlike
A triangle is great for quickly showing which direction a contact is heading. A plain contact is not very visually appealing so they have been decorated. It may be more realistic to have the whole geoscape represented as a radar overlay with simple green blobs representing targets but it would not be great to look at. As a game it needs to make people want to look at it and play it. If I remember rightly you can replace the current alien contact icon with something else really easily. Try that with something you feel looks better and post a screenshot. I would post how to do that but my hard drive failed yesterday and this laptop doesn't have the alpha build installed. KOKON
May be lets try to make it look in a more professioanl way. I like smth like on this screenshot. With some numbers around the tracking object frames. Plus i like an idea of target identification Here is almost the same thig but target square have an attached diagonal line. I guess that's a direction I have imagined ufo itself more like in galcon ie very small: May be someone have seen radar irl or even had a deal with it. Lets just check it up and understand if smth that is used irl would suit this game. Edited January 26, 2012 by KOKON
Gauddlike
The problem is that it is not very visually pleasing. I can understand the hard core sim player liking that view a lot. It would probably turn off a number of casual players though and that is something no indie dev team can afford to do.
KOKON
I don't know may be someone can tell how it really looks like. Guys in theatre HQ can also watch airplane traffic but in a different way radar operators do. professional outlook of xcom have not repulsed players and xcom was not much less indie (all computer games of that time were indie), however i'm not sure about ufo icon anyways. P.S.: indie xenonauts does not mean arcade/casual xenonauts. And it is not an xcom simplification for people with IQ below 90. It is a follower of xcom first of all. Xcom was not arcade nor casual at all and i guess avarage xcom player has iq above 100. Edited January 26, 2012 by KOKON
Gauddlike
X-com was hardly a professional look. It was basic yes but that was more likely due to tech limitations than design aesthetics. I don't think suggesting anyone who doesn't want to look at your idea of a professional radar screen while playing a game has a low IQ is particularly helpful either. http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/05deepscope/logs/aug28/media/galv_boats_on_radar_600.jpg Realistic yes, not what I would want to stare at for hours though. Not really what I would expect from a modern title either. http://atisgroupltd.com/photo/2011/04/air-traffic-control-system-1.jpg Another nice realistic view, I don't really want to spend my first few hours playing the game learning how to work in air traffic control though. KOKON
Well you are righ but you are tendentious. I don't think this crazy outlook would improve xenonauts either. But may be it is possible to take some small piece of this crzy stuff for flavour but not just blindly draw a sectoid skull on the wings ( ::tendentious:: )
Gauddlike
Try changing the icon yourself as I suggested. When you find something you are happy with post a screenshot. That way we can all see what you are suggesting in the context of the actual game. You can make the icon available for us all to try out then as well Once I can get my new hard drive installed I might give it a shot myself. I was working on some 3D ground combat cursors before it died so this isn't too far away from it.
