Is this much combat normal?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, new Xenonaut here. Anyway, I'm currently at around September 22, and I'm up to crash site number 14 already (playing on normal I think). Since this is the early game, and I've been conditioned from X-COM TFTD, I go after every one of them. It's taking me quite awhile to get through the game at this pace.

I understand this game isn't a clone of X-COM, but this seems like a lot of combat considering I only have 1 base to scan with and it's just the first month.

Is this much combat normal?

Should I be going after every single downed craft (even the light scouts) to improve troops and make money?

Does the amount of missions increase as the game goes on?

Sep 22 crashsite 14 is a lot, but its for the best really. Yes you should go after every single one for the reasons you yourself stated.

The amount of UFOs increases in the spawnpoints you already monitor and the more bases with radars you got, the more increase youre gonna see.

One thing the devs seem to be trying to emphasize is that you don't have do do every crashsite. You should shoot down every UFO you see, but as far as doing the ground missions you don't have any negative consequences for not doing a crashsite. You don't get the positive relations, skill-ups, or the like, but you aren't penalized.

I still go after every one. I take the Chinook on tour, taking in 3 or 4 consecutive missions. Only if the injuries really pile up, I've ammo issues, or it's a really big ship in conjunction with one of the first two, would I not do the mission.

Besides I never did get the logic.

President: Sebillians have rampaged across the city, killing hundreds.

Cdr Gizmo: That's definitely "Rampaging" and not "Terrorising"?

President: um.. yes.

Cdr Gizmo: Can't help you then. We just shot it down for you.

President: But they are taking out all those air defences we put in, and heading for parliament.

Cdr Gizmo: Not a terror mission though, and all our guys are pretty tired after that Light Scout mission.

President: But they'll take over the country!

Cdr Gizmo: No, the game demands that they see the futility of their actions and get picked up by a passing UFO.

President: Really?

Cdr Gizmo: Yup, you're totally safe. These sorts of deaths and destruction don't count.

After the Scouts and larger ships start to show up I quit going to Lt. Scout recoveries. Aaron left those missions in so you could use them to train new troops if your Ground OPs group got decimated somehow. Eventually you will even begin to have problems shooting down all the alien ships much less trying to recover all of them. Remember you're supposed to lose the game if you don't get the tech to go to the final mission. So, it just keeps getting harder. It's a race against time for the humans.

Unless the game really changed from V18 to V19, it was difficult, but not impossible. Half the UFOs are shot down over water, so there is no recovery mission. By the end of the game you can easily have three recovery teams, with extra (trained) soldiers to replace wounded units. If you do not want to recover Lt. Scouts, you should follow until over water and then shoot it down. The aliens drown, and all is good. :P

I admit Ive let a few escorted UFOs slip in 19.7, but no way its as harsh as you describe it, recovering every crashsite is still beneficial. Its true you get low money for selling the loot now(I still dont get that, but whatevs), but you increase your standing with the countries, thus get even more money. Its a race against time? That means you can skip on money for additional facilities to fasten your progress? Makes no sense to me.

I still feel scout maps should be smaller to make early game snappier and reduce mid/end game tedium. Quick simple shootouts to get you started, there are plenty of large maps and long missions to be had later on.

That sounds good, but I rather enjoy the larger lt.scout crews, if the crew sizes got increased on the larger ships,... well then smaller maps for small craft could only help.
