How does soldier stat progression work?

Is it based on how many kills they have? Rank? missions they have been on? A combination of all that.

I really want to up the time units my warriors have to use and have no idea how to do it

Stats are gained by doing, so shooting at an alien increases accuracy, running around increases TU's, carrying near encumbering (or encumbering) amounts of stuff increases strength and not panicking increases bravery.

Bravery also increases with medals, and HP is increased by increasing other stats.

Rank is based on how many stat increases a soldier has gained.
