The game is intermittently crashing for no apparent reason. Nothing else to say. No rhyme or reason.

Hi - these kind of intermittent crashes are most commonly caused by there being some outdated or corrupted files in your game install directory, as the logs say there's some missing data when the AI is checking for hazards like smoke etc as part of movement.

Could you go to the game install directory and delete the whole thing in File Explorer (not through Steam) and then reinstall it, and see if that helps? It can also be worth deleting the Documents/My Games/Xenonauts 2/ folder too, but if you do that then back up the /Saves/ folder first if you've got an ongoing campaign!

If that doesn't fix it then let us know and we'll dig into it a bit more.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times. The last 2 times I followed your instructions exactly - including rebooting my computer. The game crashed right after pushing F5 to quicksave.

If it happened again recently after a clean install, share your latest log files.   Worth checking My Documents/My Games/Xenonauts 2/BugReports to see if it generated an unhandled exception crash report.  You can attach all the logs, save files & unhandled exception bug report zip (if one was generated) to your post by dragging-and-dropping while making a post to attach them.

Nice one, that's a very clear bug report.

Until Chris & co are able to dig into this, if you want to keep playing your campaign, you may be able to work around it by reloading an older save.

If you revert back to the most recent geoscape save (often there's a pre-combat autosave generated prior to each mission) you may get a different map or otherwise bump the game into a slightly different state, where you don't run into this issue again.

So the issue here is a crash in the AI. Maybe some of the earlier ones you experienced have had a different cause, but that's what this one is.

What's strange about it is that you'd assume an AI crash would be reproducible from the saves. Generally it's because there's some invalid information in the map, or a unit is in an invalid state somehow, and it's making the AI throw an error and crash. But if I load these saves and pass the turn, I don't get a crash.

Do any of these saves crash reliably for you if you load them? If not, I'd go to the game options and set the autosaves to save at End of Tactical Combat Turn as well. That means that if you experience an AI crash, you'll have an end of turn save you can revert to and won't lose any progress, and hopefully you'll get something reproducible we can use to debug what issue you're having.

No they don't crash reliably. The crashes don't seem to have rhyme or reason other than it only seems to happen immediately after clicking somewhere on the screen. After the most recent patch it went quite a while before it crashed, where it was otherwise crashing fairly soon after loading into the game.

I did turn off autosave altogether, but that didn't seem to help either.

I don't know if this helps, but I have a 3 monitor setup. 48" TV with two 27" monitors on either side.

Edit: I just tried again and it crashed when the enemy was taking its turn

Can you send us a save for the mission when the crash happened? Ideally an end of turn save would be best as it would be a save with the same game state that led to the crash. If that is not available, can you send us a start of turn save and then tell us what you did on the turn prior to the crash? This will give us the best chance of recreating the game state prior to the crash, which will hopefully trigger it. Thanks!

Thanks for providing a save! I loaded the save on the latest version of the game on experimental and hit end turn and it looks like it does not cause a crash? Just to be clear, are there any other steps to do after loading the save? If no, then can you try updating to the experimental branch on Steam and see if it loads fine?

Sorry repeat myself, but there is no rhyme or reason as to why the game crashes. It seems to be completely random and so that is why it seems pointless for me to provide a save game. If it always crashed after a certain sequence or pattern, I would most definitely tell you.

I just tried again and once it crashed when hit F9 to quick load and then another time it crashed when I tried to do a manual save.

Is this on the latest version of the experimental(7.21) or on stable(7.20.3)?

The normal non-experimental

Thanks for the reply, can you try switching to the experimental version of the game to see if it still keeps on crashing?

Nevermind. I just got in another mission and my soldier fired a reaction shot and then the game crashed.

No crashes in the Geoscape though.

Thanks for the update! Good to know it doesn't crash in geoscape. Did the game generate a bug report file when you last crashed? If so, can you send it to us so we can take a look?

I went to Documents\My Games\Xenonauts-2\BugReports\ and there was not a bug report from yesterday - only older bug reports from when I was playing on the non-experimental.

I have included the most recent bug report from when I used to play on the non-experimental.

Ah, if you're on 7.21 or 7.22, the new location would be in AppData\LocalLow\Goldhawk Interactive\Xenonauts 2\BugReports. If there was a prompt to create one, it will be on that folder.
