a_beorning Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 I never had crashlanded Fighter UFO - not in v17.6 nor in 17.9 No matter what I try (missiles, machineguns), they all were destroyed. Did I miss some branch of technology tree? Or it's normal and fighters just self-destruct to avoid capture? Quote
Max_Caine Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Fightercraft and bombers are not intended to be ground missions. Quote
Chris Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 They always explode. We'll probably add some kind of research pop-up explaining this in beta. Quote
Betuor Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Well, to me the fighters remind me of a really big drone so they could just be robotic. That's my suggestion. Quote
GizmoGomez Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I like that idea, the drone bit that is. (For a moment, I thought you were saying that Every UFO self destructed, which would suck majorly.) Quote
thothkins Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 And all the aliens turn red and vanish. Did they even exist? Who will believe the Xenonauts? Oh No! We've turned it into an Invaders game (they did have a cool looking UFO) [video=youtube;uOLGrXOtuwQ] Quote
Akrakorn Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 The title sounds like one of those warrior honor code things. A true fighter never surrenders. Quote
crusherven Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Just a note, if you send your chinook after a fighter (maybe you thought it was a scout) and then shoot it down, you get a message saying "UFO escaped to space." I'm guessing that's a minor bug or just something that needs to be written. Quote
StellarRat Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I always thought fighters were too tiny (1 man/alien craft) to have any survivability when they crash landed or when hit by any type of AA weapon. Quote
erutan Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I'd go with @stellar. Think a current dogfighter (f15) vs a b52 or whatever getting hit. The former doesn't have enough left to make a proper crash site + have an alien survive impact. Quote
Max_Caine Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I'm sure this has been argued over previously. I fully agree with StellarRat, but I believe the opposing argument of the time was something along lines that no alien artifact would be left unsecured. Quote
Swe_Racoon Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Well, I always figured there was be little left but a crater and maybe some charred, twisted bits of alloy. Between weapons impact and a hearty greeting by the ground (spiced up with some Hollywood 'splosives) there'd be little left that would warrant the sending of an entire strike team. Quote

The alien remains are probably eaten by raccoons before XCom can get there. I hear they taste like chicken.... Quote
thothkins Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I trust that you mean the alien remains taste like chicken and not... Quote
thothkins Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Reminds me of a news story I saw today that they were testing for horse meat in a lamb curry, and didn't find any. Unfortunately, they didn't find any lamb, beef or chicken either and are now looking for alternative meat sources in the area for further testing. Quote
Sathra Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 Haha, I really hope that's true. Mmm, rat curry. Quote
thothkins Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 waiter, there's rather a lot of rat in my ratatouille or [video=youtube;bAs1_FxTyFs] Quote
Sathra Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Classic. Irrelevant to the actual thread (besides maybe the Buzz Aldrin part), but classic nonetheless. Quote
thothkins Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 whew! glad the Buzz Aldrin bit is still in there. Wouldn't want to go off on a tangent... Back in the UFO TV series, I'm sure they had real trouble getting to grips with alien technology, again because the fighters weren't stable in the atmosphere. I think the aliens deteriorated quickly too. They had a whole episode just to tray and lure a live one for capture. I've not be paying enough attention to the Xenopaedia, but I'll need to see if the UFO breakdowns are in there. I miss those (and they are in the assets folder Xenopaedia) Quote
