Mission types

Recommended Posts

Ive been playing a bit of Xenonauts and im wondering if there gonna be more types of missions in the game other then these below:

Crashed UFO Site: secure crashed UFO

UFO Landing Site: secure landed UFO

Attack Alien Base: Secure/Destroy Base

Defend Own Base: Kill invading enemies/prevent destruction of own base

Terror Missions: Kill all aliens, prevent human casaulties

I havent played the original X-COM but did play the new 2012 X-COM and some of those missions were great:

Abductions sites: Kill all aliens

Escort/Retreive: Get to VIP and escort him to exit point

Bomb disfusal: Get to bomb in time (number of turns) to disfuse it

Will there be more missions types other then those mentioned above?

There's the KS stretch goal mission type.

$100,000 – Indoor missions – these would be missions where combat squads are sent into large buildings or into underground bunkers to clear out an alien strike team.

Not sure beyond that. Way back there was mention of a special mission to bring back countries lost to the aliens but it hasn't been confirmed.

I'll probably break the bad news when we reach beta.

"Or now, in this post" :)

I'm wondering if the Xeno-Base tiles can be used to create Bunkers/ Hospitals/ Research Facilities on the map editor?

I'd argue that the Alien Base is a "large buildings or into underground bunkers to clear out an alien strike team. " sort of mission.

But still, it was in the Kickstarter goals. What's the historical backlash in providing oodles of content, but not perhaps one stretch goal? Is there a small group of Xenophiles who bought the game because of that goal?

I think that reclaiming human facilities taken over by ETs could be pretty fun. One idea for a scenario:

It could be a government building where the aliens are attempting to take over the country, and you would either need to defeat all of the aliens on the map, or escort the Presidenté (or whomever) back to the chopper to win the map. So that way, those who want escort missions could have that option (win the match by getting the leader to the chopper and leaving), and those who would rather just eliminate all the hostiles (in true XCOM fashion) can still do that. Win win, I'd think. (maybe not for the developers, who would need to implement the new stuff.)

I will (after posting this) post my lengthy description of how issuing commands could work for civilians, which would be essential to an escort mission, and also be useful for any other place where there are civvies running around, getting killed in crossfires, and what not.

Also, according to the events thing in the bottom of the screen leads me to the conclusion of why would they use bombs when they can just blow it all up from their ships. Also, one of the ships name's is the bomber.

Why would the aliens even have terror missions if they could just glass the city? Why would base assaults even be a thing; they could just glass over your base. Why would the aliens only land with one UFO?

TL;DR X-COM wasn't about being realistic.

Well:

1. Terror missions are to cause panic. Aliens (Reapers) viciously slaying everyone in sight really wrecks moral. It's also a better show of force with how easily a hanful of aliens can utterly decimate the best humanity has to throw at it. They also want to make the countries form a pact with them and join them. Also, who knows what they're going to do with the city afterwards. Maybe they were going to make it into a Reaper hive? Who knows because the gov. nukes it.

2. It's a bomb, how big could the damage be? Who wouldn't notice the aliens putting it in a major metropolitanarea? Why does the advanced alien technology take long enough to charge for X-Com/Xenonauts long enough to learn about it, reach it, locate it, and disable it? How did the humans learn how to deactivate an alien bomb? Couldn't the aliens just as easily turn that said bomb into a missile and launch it from a safe distance, or at least drop it from the Bomber?

3. I'm pretty sure the base is some type of bunker.

4. The ufos land to preform missions like research, aductions, and alien things. Also, it's very rare to encounter one of those landing. Also, the aliens are extremely well armed, not just anybody can mess with them.

Those are just my thoughts. :D

Hot potato grenade roulette missions perhaps??

Snakes on a skyranger lol

I had an idea for a mod for EU years ago, I isn't a brilliant idea but could be fun perhaps.

Clean up mission.

All the civilians in the area has be infected with crysalid embryos you have to contain the outbreak torch a good percentage of the buildings on the map and kill all the civies before they turn into zombies or hatch out into crysalids. You could also try and stop them from leaving the mission zone but the mechanic would be hard to implemented. There is no coding in the game which asks you to use fire t destroy a certain % of the map so it would have to be brand new coding. I'm not savvy with programming I wouldn't have a clue what is involved. (I did used to program my amstrad 464 with ready made scripts out of amstrad action magazine would spend hours typing hundreds of lines of code to find that there is a typo in the magazine and you get a dreaded syntax error on the last few lines of code)

I wish I had got more involved back in them days, maybe I could have been part of an awesome project like xenonauts :(

It's going to take a bit of balancing, before we can really see the regularity of the UFO missions. There may not be much of a void to fill. They are a fair number already. Plus you also have Alien Bases and Base defence missions as well. Mind you, I wouldn't say no to as many missions and types as possible, but I fear it's not a terribly realistic hope.

It'd be easy to mod them in as a type of terror mission, which don't have UFO tiles anyway. I just think it'd look a bit dull (the Xenonaut base tiles are mostly fun because of the interesting stuff in there which couldn't be in a normal facility) and play badly relative to a nice open level. Maybe we'll give it a try but we'll see.

The >>>>> button fills all voids. The only voids are those that players create themselves.

Maybe we'll give it a try but we'll see.

Maybe go for the (outdoor) military base terror mission instead? You've already got some assets you can use like the npc soldiers, that APC thing (if it works and isn't just a map prop), chainlink fences, Xenonaut base barracks, hangars, missile defences (sam sites). Some other stuff could be adapted as well probably though it'd still require new map assets.

Have different consequences for the two terror mission types.

Regular (civilian) terror mission failure: Lower nation relations.

Military terror mission failure: The "alien ticker" moves up a bit. Weakening Earth's militaries accelerates the alien advance.

  • 3 weeks later...

BTW what if there is an alien space fleet that is hanging between Earth and Mars, you need to destroy it first, before you can send you mens to Mars start "Cydonia" mission :-). Just ussual airbattle, but with lot of powerfull ships. Which mean - you need to gather enough of top ships+fuel+best ship weapons. The reasoning is simple - aliens understand, that X-ts are able to reach them and are taking measures.
