Anime

I watched a bit of anime recently too. I randomly saw a trailer for Knights of Sidonia on Netflix and watched that, which I enjoyed. Kinda kickstarted me watching a bit more anime...with mixed results. Planetes is also very good and worth a watch imo.

Sadly, Gantz I watched about half of before I got bored - I liked the concept but it was too clumsy. I also tried a few more of the big robot series in the hope I'd find something else a bit like Evangelion or Sidonia, but none of Gundam 08 MS Team, Rahxephon, Zegapain, or Fafner in the Azure grabbed me.

However, I've still got Attack on Titan and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex to watch. From what I've seen of both I suspect I'll enjoy them.

I loved the 8th MS team, and..Evangelion I liked, but I also hated at the same time, mostly because I hated Shinji as a protaganist, I get that he was a kid and he was prone to making mistakes, but that doesn't mean that I had to like him.

also, that ending. That, Ending, both the TV and movie ending...

Also, Attack on Titan is awesome, and I still need to watch Ghost in the Shell :stand alone complex.

It actually warms my heart to see so many of my fellow Xenonauts into anime like me, I love Mecha, I love action anime, and I love romance anime too, :D

My favorite one has to be Hellsing Ultimate though, has anyone else seen that? >:D

I really hope they make at least one more season of Attack on Titan. My understanding is the Manga it's based on has a lot more material.

I enjoyed the Full Metal Alchemist series, along with the original Avatar and Legend of Korra -- though I'm now behind on that one..

I guess I'll continue the rest of my post here.

A Certain Scientific Railgun is a spinoff of Index about a recurring character called Railgun, an electromaster, and focuses more on the science side of the setting. I highly recommend this. I liked how this show took a little more time with their stories and actually showed off a little bit of the characters' lives when they aren't doing main story stuff. It gets pretty interesting when it gets into the ethics with cloning, unchecked science, and the struggle of people without powers. Also the 2nd story of season 2 had a lot of mecs in it. It even had a transformer of sorts. I do recommend this more than Index. Not that Index was bad but this was made after Index and it does show in some of the quality.

This clip is from a little bit later in the show but it has a lot of mecs:

Some else already mentioned Hellsing Ultimate and I do recommend it too. The only thing for me that I thought was a little weird was one seen that involved sex, nudity, and a kids dead mother and how the Catholic army looked very similar to the KKK. But it is Japanese so they might not know what that is. Other than that the show is very good and to me at least look gorgeous.

A trailer for the first 4 volumes:

Rail Wars! was an interesting show if you like trains and action. Also a pretty sweet op and ed. Actuall the ed might have been better than the whole show. Show is still pretty good but the song, Overdriver, whew. The first couple of episodes were very good but around ep 4 they started to get a little creepy with one episode some chick managed to lose every piece of clothing. Had a good bit of action though. Supposed to be set in a universe where Japan never privatized their rail system. The main characters are in the railway security department of the government and deal with bomb threats and hijackings.

Ending: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xr3j3Ua3iFI

I also did a little watching of Ghost in the Shell Arise. Lovely opening. Do want to watch the new movies. I do recommend to anyone techie.

Trailer for the new movies:

Note your computer is not broken. The clip is supposed to do that.

As for recommendations for what has been said by others:

Attack on Titan was okay for me. Sometimes a little too violent but not that bad. I do think they need another season mainly because not many things happened / got answered in season one and that ending. Not going to spoil anything but that ending was...

I will say for Chris that Terra Formars feels a lot like AoT but set in our future. Also they made people a little bit stronger and the enemies less op. But I might be a little biased because ep 3 or 4 had one team that was sent to Mars land at Cydonia. Really want the alien brain to be sitting in one of the pyramids.

As for more mec things the only one that Chris didn't list that I could think of was Macross (I'd recommend Frontier. Better explanation for why singing affected the aliens. That and good singing.) and some weird show where the bad guys was a race of penguins with reversed tails that looked like erections. Well back to Macross. Pretty good. I really liked it. Tried watching the first recently but it was made in 83 so it's pretty old. The nudity surprised me though. Very random. But I would say Frontier is pretty good.

Also, if you like mecs and steampuck tech with a little noir thrown in I do recommend Korra. I don't know if you'd be into that Chris but it is pretty interesting. When they first introduced mecs in the show though it was so cool. Very unexpected.

TNoyce and Michael may I ask what part of Korra are you on? I am just trying to see what I can say that won't be a spoiler. Also, I just wanted to see how yall liked where this season is going.

Agreed on Planetes - I'm always surprised that series doesn't get more love. If you liked that, I'd also strongly recommend the Wings of Honneamise.

As far as giant robots go, A Vision of Escaflowne?

@TNoyce - a second season of Attack on Titan was announced, production was just delayed while the author wrote source material for it.

It's been a while since I've watched LoK, so I'm not 100% certain where I left off. I CAN tell you that I haven't watched an episode recently, so am probably at least 1 season (book) behind.

There are lot of Mecha series that retains a relistic settings but do not have a large audience. I found them pretty enjoying though, and 08ms was one of the only Gundam series that i've finished watching except Thunderbolt. Actually, if people check the Anime catagory on IMFDB, a lot of military setting animes can be digged out and praized.

-FLAG (2006), not the If Her Flag Breaks harem bs. It is a very little-known experimental anime, and it's special because it has a first-person ONLY POV, most of the scenes in this series is shown as some camera footage or webcam recordings. It has mecha, setting in a fictional Himalaya country suffered from civil war that just got intervened by a UNPKF that is much more powerful than the real life counterpart, but the main theme is related to War consultants in realities.

-Gasaraki (1998), this is a complicated one, not only it dive into a deep political plot under a mordern warfare background, but also placed a huge amount of Japanese traditional culture setting in it. It is totally fine if you feels really confused while watching the 1st episode. I'm still not finish it yet, but it has good ratings by people loving 80-90s animes.

-Patlabor 2: the Movie (1993), this is contrast to my "little audience" comment, as it was widely prazied and was treated as one of the iconic Anime movies in the 90s, with serious political thriller setting related to war-economics and Japanese post-war positions, and also intruging military details. If you occationally met some anime scenes on Youtube showing F-15Js flying at night or JGSDF marching into Tokyo, both scenes came from this one. Need no more to say. The other 2 patlabor movies are also very good and i highly recommend them as well. Actually, any anime series directed by Mamoru Oshii is highly recommended.

-Eureka Seven (2005), it was not a relistic setting mecha series, considering the main battle movements are mechas "surfing" in the sky. However, the music of the series really grabbed me.

-A.I.C.O. -Incarnation- (2018), it's not as good as the previous ones, and actually features Exoskeletons more than mechas, but still the settings are interesting. It's produced by Netflix, so it has fine quality, i have to say that most 2d animes produced by Netflix have far better qualities than the 3D ones. Most of the all-3D CGI series sucks.

-Armoured Trooper Votoms (1983), Full Metal Panic (2003), haven't started to watch both of them but they are highly praized with relistic mecha settings as well. Full Metal Panic have a modern-world settings.

-Ghost in the Shell the Movie (1995), Chris mentioned that he cannot appretiate the tv series, maybe you can try this one instead, it has much less political stuffs than the TV ones (the problem of the TV series is that the political plot is hard to understand and the director never attempted to make it easier to watch), more "sci-fi". Directed by Mamoru as well, the movie have a lot of iconic scenes that kept to affect morden day scienc fictions. The live action movie was to recreate this one and it did a, well, so-so job, as the original one was too iconic.  The second movie was also great, just it was not as great as the full-handrawn first one, the use of CGI was a little bit too much and making people dizzy, and the theme was duller.

-Jin-Roh (1999), also directed by Mamoru, this one was set in an alternative timeline that Japan was conquered by Nazis and create a elite SWAT force to deal with resistance. The iconic NAZI-EXOSKELETON POLIZEI figure in this one have inspired the Killzone series and many more. Actually i also want to recommend its manga Kerberos Panzer Corps that largely expands the setting, but sadly no full Eng Manga resources can be found online.

There were also numerous Air Combat animes that can be recommended here.

-Battle Fairy Yukikaze (2002), need no more to say. Dogfight masterpiece under a human-UFO setting. I would name my Fury as Yukikaze if i managed to have one. I really like the setting of human fighter jets in this one.

-Area 88, having a OVA series and a TV series. The OVA one was hand-drawn and the quality was awesome, the TV one use CGI for fighter jets instead, but have a longer story plot.

-Macross Plus (1995), I didn't watch it but it was highly praized as well. Even the AC7 have several refrence to this one.

-Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise (1983)- Well, the only air combat scene of the whole movie is within the scene. The full movie was not as interesting as this one, but it was one of the best hand-drawn anime movie of all time.

-Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (2001), People already recommended the original tv series in this thread, so i just put the movie here. It was the only dogfight scene in the movie though. However if you a fan of the original TV, you won't be dissapointed.

And there are many more anime relating to gunfights, or girls-with-guns that can be recommended.

-NOIR(2001), Actually you can take this as an Anime Jane Wick or Bourne, but this one was earlier. It has some innovative fight scenes. The plot is not complex, but the music was really good. The composer of thie series also did the OST of the Fate franchise, so you would know what i mean. Lesbian warning.

-Gunslinger Girls (2003), the series is darker than the "Loli-with-guns" you saw here. The Italy setting is really interesting, and it has good quality as well.

-Gunsmith Cats OVA (1996), This one is really good, just not well-known. It is set in 90s Chicago as the female protagonist is both a fugitive recovery agent (or Bounty Hunter) and a Gunstore owner. The original author of the manga was a car and gun fanatic, so you can expect detailed portriayal of guns and muscle cars, at least in manga. The OVA is pretty short, and the Manga can also be recommended, it has been adapted in ENG by Dark Horse (at least the wiki said so), but can't find full resources online.

-Ajin, I'm not recommending the anime version of this one. The anime sucks, literally sucks. I only recommend the original manga that can be found online, as the author put much details on CQB tactics and weapons, and the anime version just doesnt give a F*ck about this. Just read the manga only and you won't regret this.
