Elite: Dangerous on Kickstater

Recommended Posts

unlikely to reach his goal or not asking for enough to make a proper game?

It seems to do quite well for a kickstarter without a video... why is there no video?

£1,250,000?

Is he mental?

Star citizen is also on kickstarter and the same amount is being asked and theyve gone past there target by 800.000$ and SC is a clone of Elite so i see no reason to see why they Braben will not hit the target of 1.25m.

Elite was staggering when it came out. Would a remade elite have a unique place in the current game system?

Given that we have FTL, Eve online, etc - what would a remade Elite bring to the table that we can't find in the current stable. They focus on multi-player as being a core part of the remake, putting it in direct competition with one of the most durable of current MMO games (Eve). People may back them, but if the multi-player part is to work, they they will need to make it something people buy into on the longer timescale. I think that there is lots that could differentiate it, but think that they will also need to really bring that out in there pitch, as I don't currently see what it will be.

Han-Solo (Commander Jameson) simulator - also backed. I think I may be buying all my games as ks projects if this trend continues. The guys starting ks projects are actually giving the public what they want, not what they think they want (death to EA etc. ;-)). And it's DAVID BRABEN himself - sure to be good!

I think I was the first person to reach Elite on the c64. Zapp! 64 mag were running a comp. to see who could do it (1st ever edition). I sent my proof in (took me about 255 hrs to become elite) but strangely, nothing was heard about the competition or who won it...

I didnt have the first issue but i started reading shortly after in the same year, I think it was like 65p for a magazine here in the UK around 1985/6 i think.

Yeah they were the days, Something magical about it all back then probably cause we were kids and everything was in its infancy so alot was left to the imagination.

Yes - I feel so lucky I was a 70s and 80s kid. Tiswas/Micro Live/Database/Monkey(!) on the TV, the dawn of the home computer age (i've still got the Advanced/home computer course, published by Orbis, mags about the house). Speccy/C-64/Amiga...

The only thing to be aware of is that it could be a massive cash grab:

A commenter on RPS has done a bit of investigative work. Dropping £5 million in two years is a bit suspect.

That said, I've backed it for £20, but am keeping an eye on it. The beauty of it being a two month KS is that if the situation hasn't improved, or more negative details have come out, I can just cancel my pledge.

This. Exactly this!!!

If the target of 1.25 is not hit everyone gets a refund, If the target gets hit 2 things can happen.

1. The game is made and everyone is happy

2. The game dont get made and company claims bankruptcy, Nobody gets there money back.

Many people are willing to bet a small amount of cash if it means a brand new original Elite!!

If company goes bankrupt then Elite will truly die and Braben wont be trusted ever again, He will be tarnished forever in the world of Video games and it could ruin his career as a games dev.

I dont think Braben would do that tbh to all the Elite fans, Not to mention possibly be hated by the world wide gaming community.

If you look at it factually its worth the risk in my opinion.

On a side note when xenonauts gets to beta stage ill be buying that too.

The reason Elite 4 will do so well is that many of us have been desperate for a game to improve on what Elite started for nearly 30 years. Elite 2 and 3 were technically clever but flawed, newtonian physics made the combat poor (in my and many people's opinion). The clincher for me to back the project was DB's admission that those physics meant the gameplay was not as good as the original.

Despite the many tens or even hundreds of clones, nothing has ever matched Elite - though Privateer came close and exceeded it in many ways (the world was just too small though). They have all had flaws, or just features, that stopped them giving the feel that Elite did.

I only found out about Star Citizen yesterday on the Elite 4 boards and I've backed that too. Rather than competing with each other I think having two games of this type with such a pedigree will stir up more funding and more interest.

No video and no images? I mean I don't want finished graphics, but a wall of text is not that appealing...

Especially when that wall of text includes a goodly number of grammatical errors in just the first few paragraphs.

I'm waiting on the sidelines for this one until I start to see some kind of evidence that the guy can make anything even remotely decent and polished.

I have higher hopes for this one than for Chris Robert's space game thingy.

The multiplayer aspect is a bit worrisome because it often means that features like hiring an AI escort are dumped in favour of "just ask a human friend to fly escort". Much easier to code. =)

If the AI is smart enough to work together it shouldn't be too much trouble to get it to work with a player.

I wouldn't mind being able to hire multiple individual crewmen (AI as well as other players) to man the larger ships as well.
