Betuor
So, if they were to make a mash-up of X-com EU and Xenonauts, which would you prefer more. As to the mashing them up, I mean like for X-Nauts, take the Xenonauts (humans) and their stuff in the mechanics of X-con EU and pit them up against the aliens and vis versa. I'd have to say, I think X-Nauts would be the easiest to win and I also think It'd be the easiest. What do you think?
BobbyDylan
Dunno, I've yet to play Xcom, although I'm very keen to do so. At the end of the day, it all comes down to user preferance. As much as I love the old Xcom, I like where the new one is going, and we get Xenonauts (the Xcom HD remake, essentially). I personally think Xcom will be a tad better (I really like the "fluidic" feel of the combat in Xcom) than Xenonauts. But given the development budgets for the 2 titles, that's hardly an insult to Xenonauts.
thothkins
Pretty tough to say. Has the new game balanced out the pychics and blaster bombs? If not, then end game could be tougher in Xnauts. There would appear to be a much higher casualty rate in Xnauts than a campaign of X-Com, going by the report of 22 dead for the whole thing (sans cheating). The cold war weapons would also make the aliens much harder to kill presumably. On the other side, Xnauts start off as being pretty experienced, so perhaps there's an early edge. In the end, it's a bit hard to compare but getting to play the games on release will no doubt help.

We'll see.

Irishguy117
I dunno, that demo seemed to be trying pretty hard to convince us there will be many deaths. I literally yelled whose in charge here? at the screen when it kept telling me what to do.
XenoMask
http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?139306-How-to-change-Difficulty-Settings-here Demo is set on easy and first demo mission is tutorial(which is optional).
AvistTorch
Actually, both the demo missions were from the tutorial, though the second is modified. The tutorial will be completely skippable in the final game.
BobbyDylan
After playing the Demo, I recind my initial statement. The lack of controle the player has over camera movement and base placement makes me doubt the replayability of Xcom.....
Moonie
You know what? I am going to boot up my old copy of UFO Extraterrestrials Gold. Update: Wow, I forgot how good UFO ET was. This old game eats xcom eu for breakfast. Edited September 26, 2012 by Moonie
XenoMask
You consider UFO Extraterrestials Gold great?... ...Then again, I consider Apocalypse to be best XCOM game ever, so I guess I don't have right to comment on that (Seriously though, you are at the point where you seem to be posting in any thread mentioning XCOM: EU to say that [X Xcom type game other than it] is better )
Betuor
Not to complain though, but the original post was asking would it be more fun to play the Xenonauts's humans fighting against the XCOM EU aliens in their setting of the XCOM EU's humans against the Xenonauts aliens in their setting. Gorlom
Both mashup versions would be broken so as that they wouldn't be any fun to play compared to either of the original versions. Think most posters has tried to say that it is too hard to judge based on what we know since noone has really tried the Firaxis XCOM. If I had to pick one I'd fight against Xenonauts aliens just because I hate the thin man alien in XCOM. (and various others feels disappointing) Edited September 26, 2012 by Gorlom
XenoMask
Dunno. I personally actually prefer aesthetic of original games(and Apocalypse)/remake's to aesthetic you see in UFO Extraterrestials/Xenonauts/UFO: Alien Invasion. I don't really get why people want to make game more gritty/realistic. And since alien species in games also follow same rule(more "cartoony" the aesthetic, less "practical" aliens) so I think it might be visually slightly jarring. Besides, almost every alien in Xenonauts is bipedal So I do prefer Firaxis' aliens because of that as they do look different at least.(posture/standing wise I mean, caesans, sebilians and androns do have slightly posture changes, but sebilians aren't really more slouching than ceasans and androns are only standing upright little more than caesans) Edited September 26, 2012 by XenoMask

XenoMask
Eh, I guess coolest would be Xenonauts and XCOM at same time vs aliens from both games at same time?
Gorlom
This a hypothetical question about what would you think would be cooler. I know I'd never work. I can't answer because it would never work. I'm hung up on the issue that I can't imagine it. Neither one is cooler than the other out of 2 broken toys if I cant figure out how to play with them. I'm sorry but I can't figure out how to answer your question other than that I hate the thin man in XCOM.
iamkyon
I don't mind the Thin Man, but the art design for the Strogg-like Mutons and Floaters is so derivative it's not even funny.

XenoMask
I hate the thin man in XCOM. So why do you hate thin men so much? You hate men in black alien lore? Alien infiltrators? Alien in human skin thing? Slender man? The fact that they are basically new snakemen? @iamkyon: To be fair, they had to either make them purple skinned muscle men in greensuits or somehow make them look more threatening and still have that beast like look.(its kind of odd, but in Alien Turn screen and opening intro you can see that they have claws...) @Moon: Lol, at that point you are probably bored of doing that. Besides, this is Xenonauts forum so I doubt there are much people talking about it.

Matters of art design come down to personal preference, and as strange as it may seem, those spandex-clad purple beast-men are more likely to strike the fear of Cthulhu in me than what Firaxis have produced. They were probably shooting for "gritty" rather than "pulpy B-grade sci-fi", but alas, the former direction has a tendency to bore me to tears. XenoMask
Eh, to be fair, http://ufopaedia.org/images/9/93/Muton.png http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/5/58689/2107993-xcom_look_ahead_muton.jpg Main difference is that they look slightly more ape like/bulky and have green armor instead of green skin suit. http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120418081715/xcom/images/d/d6/XCOM-EU_Berserker.jpg Also, come in huge ass red variation. Really, original mutons would look silly in 3D graphics without some changes. I mean http://media.moddb.com/cache/images/mods/1/13/12233/thumb_620x2000/muton.JPG They aren't only ones who thought that.(i'm not sure, but I think one of those is alliance(that canceled xcom fps) concept art and one is model from enforces(that crappy arcade shooter with robot) I guess they could have gone for same direction and make them to be same, just be naked(since their skin is armor apparently) without green skinsuit. Though it true that if human eating purple muscle men with green leotards came out of nowhere I'd be scared too It would definitely be more bizarre than armored aliens. iamkyon
I'd pick the Muton from X-Com: Alliance over the latest iteration any day. Apropos, the one thing that impressed me about the 2010 E3 trailer for Irrrational's XCOM was the cuboid monstrosity near the end of the video, and especially the bone-chilling noise it makes. Here's hoping it'll appear in XCOM: Enemy Unknown in some shape or form.
XenoMask
Well, collective name of enemy "faction" of XCOM FPS is apparently "Outsiders"(http://xcom.wikia.com/wiki/Outsider) and there is crystal alien(which's 'phasing' looks like small crystals are growing into larger one) XCOM: EU which is named "Outsider", but I doubt there is further reference. Anyway, they are still making that FPS right on 2013, right?
Gorlom
So why do you hate thin men so much? You hate men in black alien lore? Alien infiltrators? Alien in human skin thing? Slender man? The fact that they are basically new snakemen? That they are a perversion of snakemen! (the snake foot and head was what made them interesting) That they to me feel like an extrapolation from the infiltrators in FPS XCOM. That they don't even look like they could pass for humans. The horrible way they move. Screams of cartoonish villain imo (possibly from Roger Rabbit.) Imo they are more sectoid than the sectoids... which is basically dogs that can use guns and make colourful lights stream between them and another unit. But I don't mind the sectoids as much. And probably that I don't know anything about the slender man lore. Do you have any more art from alliance? I bet everything else look equally horrible graphically. (not esthetically but graphically) Edited September 26, 2012 by Gorlom
