Advanced Aircraft and dropship

Recommended Posts

In the original game back in 1994, you could through the advancement in technology, to develop a fighter drop ship, that could engage alien aircraft, and shoot them down, but at the same time carry your ground troopers, to investigate the crash site, and engage any aliens, and should you be victorious recover any alien artifact, for research.

It there any thing in the development of this game, to match what has gone before, or are we aiming for something better!!

Yep, there are better fighters and Transports in the Game, but not fully unlocked yet. Fighters yes (as I know from the last Betas), Transports no (there are Problems with the Ground-Fighting-Maps and so). Both will unlocked fully, after the Reworks from Ground-Fighting-Maps etc. are done.

Should be testable in Beta 14 or 15, belongs how long the old Freelancers (from X1) and new Freelancers as well as the Devs need to Rework everything what have to fully reworked (Ground-Fighting-Maps, UFO´s, Special-Missions, Base-Management, Geoscape etc.).

But don´t aspect before End July, beginning August with that, because that´s a lot of Work. Chris mentioned that fully Rework in an Monthly Update without an Date for the Beta 14.

So we've not got any plans to add a fighter that also acts as a dropship to the game, no - I never really saw the point of those ships. If they were shot down in battle then your squad were killed (or took lots of damage) and I didn't see why the crash site couldn't wait a few hours until the dropship arrived after your fighter jets shot down a UFO. What was it that you liked about them?

No modern military would allow a fighter/interceptor to enter combat with a ground assault element onboard. All your eggs in one basket comes to mind. Specialist roles need specialist craft (even in sci fi!). Would love a Spooky or a Puff The Magic Dragon Gunship to just once really give it to the aliens though;)!

If the dropships have some defensive weapons that could allow it to brought time to escape from UFO engagements (instead of getting shot down immediately), then it might be a good idea, otherwise no, I don't see real life nor fictioanl counterpart of this idea unless you want a corvette level starship to fit the role. Even the transport converted anti-air gunships in Yukikaze are purely gunships and lack transportation capabilities.

Yep, in the Orignal X-Com Series your Transports get Armed. That was the thought in that Games in the 1980s and 1990s. But newer Games like the new XCOM-Series, the older UFO-After-Series, UFO Extraterestials, Xenonauts 1 and Phoenix Point don´t have armed Transports, because if your Transport will shoot down the Explosion from Weapons etc. will kill your Troops, like Chris said already.

Better it´s the Way to secure the Transport with Long-Range-Fighters like in UFO Extraterestials and in the third DLC from Phoenix Point. Maybe it´s about the knowlegde we have now about the real Extraterestial-Research.

I do see your point, it is that I was only asking, as it was in the original game. The that "EurekaSeven" makes is valid as it would given that ship some ability to escape destruction on long fights.

Perhaps if the transport aircraft could be teamed up with two fight escorts on these long journeys, as when you scramble a squadron, that might fix this problem?

Since fighters now have a modular system of upgrades I think the same should be appropriate for the transport aircraft. Maybe at first they could be escorted by fighters, but later down the line they should also be fitted with upgrades that allow them to escape from alien attack ships on their own. Maybe an energy shields for tanking more damage, boosters to make a getaway, heat flares to avoid missiles, and later lazer point defense to shoot them down,...

We will see. Maybe Goldhawk will integrate such things in an upcomming DLC. Now we have to concentrate on an full playable and stable Base-Version from Xenonauts 2 with everything that is important. The Team and their Helpers have enough Problems to solve for the playable Base-Game without such secondarys or tertaries for the Transports.

Be happy if we get the Escorts for the Base-Game and maybe later such Transporter-Upgrades you Xeroxth mention.
