[Request] Callsign expansion

Recommended Posts

You know how it is. You're playing a tense tactical mission and one of the troops does something that will make him memorable in your eyes for the rest of the game. An amazing shot, cunningly using civilians as human shields or simply just a knack for always being the guy in the thick of it. Invariably the soldier gets some sort of nickname as a memento of their actions.

While, you can change the call sign and technically can insert this, the field isn't long enough to put it between his name, particularly some of the Eastern European ones.

Likewise, I generally assign equipment based on attributes. So, the guy with the highest strength gets the rocket launcher. Now, while the game remembers the equipment, I seem to lose mine whenever the soldier goes off to the infirmary. It would be nice to be able to insert something in there that specialises the soldier’s function, and keep the rank and full name.

Again, this would either be an extension to the call sign field, or one just below it.

A small request in the huge scheme of things, but one that I'd be really pleased with. I've read lots of war stories of players bonding with their little troops, so it may add something to the experience.

The game already does things like soldier backgrounds and I see there are medals in the assets folder, but I'd like something that I could personalise for myself.

A little text box to put in notes, or memorable moments would be nice too...

There was some discussion already on giving soldiers specializations which would in turn streamline the equiping process. Medals and other distinctions were also discussed. Let's hope some of those make it into the final game.

I would second making the name field for each soldier a bit bigger.

This is kinda related, and I'd hate to make a new thread for it. Anyway, I love the nickname/call sign feature. My friends and I gets tons of laughs naming certain soldiers after political leaders, super heroes, our teachers, etc. We even make up stories, like how Ronald Reagan and our old history teacher would be best friends because our teacher would tell the same bad jokes over and over but Ronald wouldn't remember them.

So, when I see soldiers getting stats increased, I don't care about David Washington or Eve, I care about Margarat Thatcher and George Bush Sr. I figure that if a player is going through the effort of nicknaming their favorite soldiers, then they probably don't care for their real names.

Also, on the topic of ranks. Would it be possible to go into the files and change the names of ranks around (Not even trying to change the rank symbol yet.) In X-Com, I would have "40k, the early years" games, where my soldiers would be grouped into Constripts (Privates/Rookies), Guardsman (Squaddies), Sergeants/Veterans (Sergeants), etc. I would literally type out "Guardsman Washington" and "Guardsman Gaston." It was my way of showing who was expendable. So, if in this game I could change Pvt. to Con. and Cpl. to Grd., it would save me years of time. So I'm just wondering if it's a quick fix of going into a notepad and changing some letters, or what. The only other game I've ever modded was Dwarf Fortress, which is ALL notepad.

I've had a look at using note pad but it doesn't seem to like it, it's difficult to tell at the moment as things are still changing but I'm sure mods will be out to help soon after launch, still mean to continue playing about with stuff and I'll let you know if i stumble across anything you might find useful.

There is a thread in the bug section about ranks being in the wrong order ( think it's called lieutenant rank missing or something)

Giovanni has answered in that thread how to rename ranks.
